I’m sorry for y’all’s loss. 😢 He reminds me of my grandpa. He was an old French-speaking trawler from Bayou Lafourche. I’m grateful to have a video of him speaking French here on RUclips. I’m sure your family cherishes this video of your Nonc Ervin. I know the videos of my grandparents and great-uncle that we have are my family’s greatest treasure. 😊

Your Cavalier family arrived to Louisiana from the town of Agüimes on the island of Grand Canaria in the Canary Islands of Spain. The surname Cavalier was originally Caballero and was changed often said as Cavallero and was changed to Cavalier by one of your ancestors to sound French, probably to assimilate better in French speaking Louisiana. Canary Islanders are known as isleños in Louisiana.

@IslenoGutierrez you are absolutely correct. Our ancestors were also called Caveros at one point. May I ask how you figured all this out. I did an ancestry tree when I was a senior in high school.

This Man absolutely has an education. His didn't come from a conventional class room. I've worked with several old timers like him in the construction field. Fine with the tape measure, great hands or Foremen on the job. A K-12 education might not have changed him one bit besides being literate. At least that's the way I felt about guys like him I've known. Men of moral character with great work ethics and personality. Just not literate usually not entirely their fault.

I spent most of my life in them same waters. There used to be plenty of people like him. They are getting few and far between now. We made a lot of money during the summer months trapping, crabbing, frogging and crawfish as teenagers. during the spring you can travel the old logging canals deep into the swamp when the bromeliads are in bloom. Very beautiful.

I had not seen him in a while and was sad to hear that one of the last true cajuns had gone to his reward. We could all learn something about life & success from Mr. Erv. May he rest in the well deserved peace in heaven.

I think the title isn't good because there are ALOT of "true cajuns" that are under 30. This idea that we are dying is a myth even perpetuated by our parents.
Cajuns are here and were not going anywhere.
This includes our own dialect of french as well.
Je parle ma langue et vis ma langue, il y a beaucoup comme moi.

Well true Cajuns (Louisiana Acadians) don’t exist anymore. The Acadians after their arrival intermarried with the peoples of Louisiana. Today’s Cajuns are a mixed origin group whose ancestors come from various French speaking places such as France, Acadia, Québec, the French Caribbean (white), French Switzerland, Belgium and even for some, non-French speaking places like Spain, Germany, Britain/Ireland and/or Italy.
There are currently more non-Acadian surnames among Cajuns today than Acadian ones. There’s the saying: “there’s 3 ways to be Cajun: by the blood, by the ring or by the back door”. This is a testament to the mixed origins of Cajuns today. Before the term Cajun was adopted en masse in the 1960’s-1970’s, Cajuns were called Creoles.

One month later, he was reared at the present day corner of LA 29 & Interstate 49. @ 2 miles West of that intersection was the the Big Ridge locally known as Grand Coteou, and not just Grand Coteau, LA because the Ridge parallels the western side of the Atchafalaya Basin! and runs North to Illinois and East to Kentucky!

Acadiens wanted their own culture, language, and independence after the civil war. to prevent that the Acadiens were divided racially. Plenty of true cajuns live, and range from poor and uneducated like this brother to PHDs and well off, but this propaganda wants to define us ONLY by poverty and the swamp rather than the philosophy of generosity and simple living that made all Acadiens equal. Viva Acadia.

Last of the true Cajuns?.. I didn't know my heritage was a contest to see who can do it good enough. My dad grew up on a houseboat too. 12 kids with my Mawmaw stuffing crabs at a crab canner on the water.. But even for cajuns, things change. I grew up in Stevensville off lake Varette not far from there. The only thing I have against the video is that you got to be uneducated or cannot read or write to be a true Cajun? I mean ...what exactly are you trying to say?

True Cajuns (Acadians) don’t exist in Louisiana anymore since about the mid 19th century. When the Acadians arrived, they didn’t stay isolated. They intermarried with the original French speaking white settlers of Louisiana called French Creoles, who were a people of a mixed European type ancestry between ancestry from France and ancestry from Québec. This group also absorbed a little ancestry from 19th century French immigrants and white French Caribbeans from St. Domingue (colonial Haiti) and some even absorbed some German or Spanish ancestry. This very mixed white group is the group today identifying as Cajuns, but are not Cajuns. There are actually more non-Acadian surnames among Cajuns than there are Acadian (Cajun) surnames. No one so invested in the Cajun identity wants to hear this, but the truth is not always pleasant.
