    UPDATE!!! ***************************
    Thanks to the comments section below, I'm learning that I've been pronouncing GORE wrong all this time! I'm self taught and I screw up the technical/proper stuff all the time but I appreciate the education I receive from so many of you. So thank you.
    Apparently they are called GORE, or GORES for plural or a GORED Skirt for the completed piece!. Some are saying Godets but most are saying Gore. I dunno haha... either way they're an awesome way to add volume to a simple piece!
    Today, on the DIY, we're upcycling a men's button-down shirt into a feminine & flowy frock dress! I'll be walking you through my take on the iconic Rhode Rainbow Dress (that I've had my eyes on forever). While this dress may look a little intimidating to create, I've got all the tips, tricks, & hacks to make this upcycling tutorial as beginner-friendly as possible! All you need is a button-down shirt, some fabric scissors, a little horsehair trim & a sewing machine to create this voluptuous, fabulous dress that screams Spring fashion! This technique can also be used on straight dresses if you're not feeling the button-down look. I can't wait to see what y'all create! ✨
    If you try my DIYs, make sure to tag me on my socials!

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged 3 года назад +4

      My back would kill me if I worked on the floor. Nobody has room for a dedicated 'fancy' cutting table but any kitchen table can be used as a cutting table. You can get folding cardboard cutting mats for very cheap and I put it on top of my kitchen table. (or I use my teflon rotary cutting mat if i am using a rotary cutter). The cardboard one is bigger and works fine for cutting with scissors. Save your back, save your floor and rug. You will thank yourself when you get older. That's keeping it super real!

    I think the word you mean is godet, pronounced "go-day"
    There is a word gore which is usually a pattern piece that has a flare when 4 or more pieces are sewn together to make a flared hem on a skirt. Godets are usually inserted like you did and are added at hem to give a flouncy look, as you said.
    Great how to video as usual and beautifully done !! 👏

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged 3 года назад +8

      I think she means GORE (which is the wrong word, as you correctly said , godet is more accurate) but she is saying GORD which makes it very confusing. Gores are not triangle insets, they are wedge shaped pieces that go all the way from waist to hem to make up the skirt. But GORD is nothing, it's a non existent word I don't know where that D came from.

    • @OrlyShaniShow

      hahah yes I am learning that very quickly here in the comments section that they are called GORE, or GORES for plural or a GORED Skirt. Some are saying Godets but most are saying Gore. I dunno lol The negatives of being Self taught...I screw up the technical/proper stuff all the time.

      @@OrlyShaniShow Most are saying "gores" because they're just correcting the pronunciation. But if you do some research you can learn the difference between gores and godets. Gores are wedge shaped pieces that go from waist to hem, multiple gores make up the entire skirt. Godets are triangle shaped pieces that are inset into the bottom of a skirt.

    I must DM you on this dress I’m making my granddaughter for Easter. It’s from the Spring/Summer Trend fashion show. Instead of the gored bottom. I’m doing a cupcake bottom using fishing wire. Give me a few days to do it. I’m in a time crunch, because I’m leaving for Tennessee soon, and in the middle of making 8 bouquets, 7 boutonnieres and 3 flower girl baskets for a wedding. Hoping I can get to it, and hoping it turns out fine. Never done anything like this before. I failed in love with you and your work, since you made the zip away skirt. Then I found you on Home&Family. Love the show. Always a fan❤️.

    I think doing the multicolor is easier than you were thinking. I am going to try it, and let you know. I have been dreaming of doing something similar with a long dress. Looking at yours, gave me an easier idea. I will send a picture if it works.

    This is so so pretty!!!!!!!! I totally want to try this, but I have so many other things on my plate. I love how that horsehair adds so much flair and beauty. I might just have to make a gored skirt in general. Beautiful.

    As usual, I liked this video midway into it, because I already love it so much! I’m just wondering if I have any men’s shirts around home, which is nearly impossible because both my man and my dad are slim and I’m not! I’m fabulously curvy and I need a fabulously curvy shirt! And I’m running home to get my brand new sewing machine from home, ASAP! I do realise it is probably going to be a few weeks or a week at least for me to be able to sew anything, but hey, better late than never! The machine’s been sitting pretty, waiting for me to use it, so let’s jump into flourishing a new talent again, this lockdown!

    I have been asking my hubby for his shirts, and yesterday he just cleaned out his closet and gave me all his dress shirts. I'm planning on making a different shirt dress. Now I can't wait to complete it, this dress is awesome!!

    Oh my goodness! Thank you for this video! I have been saving 3 of my husband's shirts for just this reason! (I have only held on to them for 3 years! 🤪) I was thinking it would be cute for my 5 year old daughter too. Make her a dress from daddy's shirt. Wish me luck!
