one of the best tutorials i ever seen in Engineering in general; you walk the way for a beginner and combine big number of details carefully without overwhelming the viewer; But more importantly, the expert tips you always give in each step which answers questions always comes in that early steps; this video saves days of learning; and i really surprised it's not sponsored by Altium I wish you all the best !
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I only want to mention that with Designer 365, if you want to resize the board size, you will not only need to select "Board Planning" under View, but then also need to go to Design, and select Edit Board Shape in order to have the resizing tabs shown.
I've just started using Altium 22 having previous used several other schematic capture and layout packages. I must say that this video has been invaluable to me in getting to grips with the basics of Altium. Excellent work Robert :)
Thanks, Robert! This tutorial is fantastic for beginners-it thoroughly covers all the essentials of Altium. It's also compatible with Altium Designer 24, which is a huge plus!
Sometimes when I watch videos its too slow and I watch on 1,25x, but you are so efficient and no time is lost so I watch on 0,75x so I have time to do it at the same time without always pausing :p.
Thank you for this video. It's motivational for me, and we are going to follow yout steps! This is a success. We are from Buenos Aires, Argentina, we focus on develop technology for hydroponics farms. Now we are redesinging ours leds pcbs, so this video it's what we need. THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you, although I have never used Altium Designer before but after seeing this tutorial I can use it smoothly. In my opinion, this is the most complete and easiest Altium Designer tutorial for beginners that I have ever seen. You must be a teacher because your explanations are very clear and easy to understand.
This was a fantastic and comprehensive tutorial for getting started with Altium, Robert. You are a very gifted instructor. I have only worked with Altium from the perspective of editing already-existing designs. It is great to be able to see the entire process of creating a design.
Thank you Robert. Very helpfull tutorial. I have one comment for possible improvement: I find I quite often have to pause the video to be able to follow along, but pausing causes to video controls to appear at the bottom of the screen so that I have difficulty to see what you do when you navigate near the bottom of the screen. I think it would help if you would record with the Altium not at full screen but just a bit reduced from full screen to make a small gap at the bottom of the screen. That way, pausing the video would not block what is done at the bottom of the Altium screen. Hope that was understandable.
use firefox and pop the video out using the picture in picture mode. You can then scale the video to be about the same size as it was within the window. and move it right above the time slider. Note: it helps to have a dedicated monitor for the tutorial and another dedicated monitor for Altium.
thank you so much robert i learn a lot from you about altium designer because what i learn in university is not enough thanks i love your channel :) :) ^_^
Excellent and Professional Presentation. Everything explained nicely like someone is making a REAL JOB PCB. Everything taken care in video... Use of Datasheet, Track-Size, Trace Placement , Vai Placement, Update Footprint , Update PCB with Additional Components .Design Rule Check... I would like to see more video like this. May be on SMPS or Microcontroller Based.
Thank you. I do have MIcrocontroller based course ( academy.fedevel.com/courses/online-want-to-design-your-own-arduino-board ) and Switching Power Supply based course ( academy.fedevel.com/courses/online-switching-power-supply-design-course ) but they are not free as it is a lot of work to prepare these kind of materials and also I use the income from that paid courses to be able to create free tutorials.
Thank You. I hope many like me will find it and appreciate it. Its really helpful for me and the course was well structured. Once I get a job im purchasing your courses.
I had a problem where there was no "Rules" option under "Design" at 54:18. solution: make a new project and UNCHECK CONSTRAINTS MANAGEMENT. Then copy all of your files from the project folder in explorer into the new project folder and should be good to go
Thank you for such a great tutorial video! Everything clear and well explained. Imho it would be a bit easier to watch the cursor actions if the clicks ware animated.
Than you your explications are very clear actually i am using altium 17 an i have a project with components to place in top and bittom layer but unfortunatly when i do run check i have 45 errors your explications helps me but i dont knox if you using altium 17 thank you
#awesome. Thank you very much sir for helping us and posting such nice content which was really helpful for me as a beginner. I strongly recommend this tutorial to all those who want to learn Altium Designer for the very first time. Again, huge respect and appreciation 4u sir!
Hi Robert! I am facing a problem defining the board shape in the board planning mode. I don't get the option to resize the board on selecting the board region in the board planning mode. Is there any particular setting I need to do to get the option of resizing the board?
Having the exact same problem. Found the solution yet? Edit* found the solution. After entering board planning mode, go to the 'Design' menu in the top left corner and select 'Editboard shape'.
If fabrication notes are able there will be advantages because I am usually not familiar with that and it will help on fabs. But this video is also really helpful thanks!
Previously very thanks for this very helpful videos but I have a problem at manufacturer part search, when Im trying to download the component, for instance resistance, place button in download button is disabled, How can I fix this problem?
thank you so much for your tutorial, I would ask you ... but if one of the components of your "Component List" is not a component of Digikey, and I want to enter the price manually, can I do it only in the excel sheet or can I also enter the price in the schematic ?
Yes. You use this field to tell Altium that this type of component should have a Designator that starts with "R". When used in a design they will be annotated with the proper Reference Designator numbers. Other component types have different designators (for example, "C" for capacitor)
@@jackolson8015 Yes, but I am referring to the item ID designator, not the "Designator" would be the box above, is it possible to rename it or not? Thank you. 14:08
Hello Robert, I am learning altium having used KiCad for a long time before. Is there a reason why you are drawing the symbols by hand? I have Altium version 20 and I can just use the Place Part option, but I dont know what difference it makes. Thanks for the tutorial!
my biggest issue is your content is so quick that i cannot select a fine enough point on the timeline to watch the bit you just did without re-watching a bunch of stuff I appreciate it otherwise
I think in the crack versions of Alitum the BOM does not generate correctly and it gives error in most of the excel file columns, am I right? Because I am getting errors in the excel file in all the suppliers columns.
Hi Robert, I've a question about the "BOM". In the old Altium (18) when you create the BOM with the excel template, in the file that you create the manufactor cell have the hyperlink to web page of Supplier's product. From version 20 of Altium this connection not to be seen! Do you know how I can do this type of connection? thank you
Sir, In this tutorial, we are creating footprint for 3 components . Also we are adding "assembly layer" to these footprints after placing 3D Model. MY Question about a STEP ( View Configuration -> Right Click Mechanical 1 -> Add Component Layer Pair ) In POP window Select "Layer Type" = "assembly". This STEP will be done ONLY for FIRST component ? NO need to REPEAT this STEP for 2nd component, 3rd component, and so on ? Please help to understand.
Hi Robert! I have the following questions: 1. When creating a schematic element how do we choose the location, font and size of the Designator and Comment? 2. When I place a schema element the Designator and Comment are displayed with 14p size and unknown font. What caused this? Altium Designer 22
I have a question regarding the Altium Designer 3D view. I normally build 2 layer boards and when i switch the 3D view I see top and bottom layers but the middle part is transparent and I see all the via's. I don't know how to fix it. Can you guide me?
52:48 if double clicking doesn't work for you try Design->Edit Board Shape. Or try using the shortcut of double pressing d after selecting board.
thanks !!
u're my hero, dude!
Thank for your valuable comment ❤

It's good to see Altium has implemented some of the fantastic features found in Kicad...cheers !
