In this edition of #TheDailyDoug, we're making it both a #WorldWedneday and a #WeirdWednesday with Amerika from Rammstein. Every time I come to this band to experience their art, they always challenge my biases while providing quite a bop. And, this pointed critique of American cultural imperialism is no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed this one...I hope you do as well.

I think the song is more a story of globalisation of American products, politics, beliefs which are overtaking local cultures. This certainly is not a love song.
Yeah, I remember someone telling me it's just them taking the piss out off US' "Art of Advertising".
Yes, they talk about this in their documentary, Rammstein in America. A lot of beautiful worlds, but definitively not a love song
Can you tell me a product that is made in America? Other than food, drinks, etc. I work in the automotive field and almost every part that I see comes from another country. And I have 30 years in the field.

The song is about cultural imperialism. The song is from 2004 and is inspired by the Iraq war from 2003 and the rumored narrative of the spread of democracy according to US ideas as an ideological agenda. Today we have a different situation again and the USA stands here for a phenomenon only because of its global success, which is in the good tradition of other empires such as the Roman Empire, the British Empire, China and other empires of the past and future.
And where those empires now? Right, they dead.
Objectively I can acknowledge that this is a somewhat repetitive song, but I never get sick of those heavy guitars on the chorus. Such a great sound.
Yeah Rammstein songs and riffs are simple and repetetive but they dont claim to be complicated they are just effective as they are :)
Repetition is one of the main characteristics of Industrial Music, regardless of its sub-genre.
Hello from Germany. First of all let's be clear. This song was written under the impression of the horrific events of 9/11, more particular how the US responded. The Iraq war with all it's consequences. People outside of the US, especially in Europe alienate from the US, or maybe got a more realistic view on the US. To us Europeans the US was a role model regarding it's values. Proclaiming a country (Iraq) as a scapegoat to get revenge was not part of the picture we had. In the making of of the official video, they made clear, that a lot of things coming from the US is are good and mostly welcome. It starts being a problem when US culture is being forced onto other cultures, which are most of times a lot older than the existing USA without respecting the countries own traditions. That's when it becomes, sorry to say, a bitter taste of arrogance.
Music wise I love the song, because of the awesome heavy riff and of course, Till powerful voice. Such a banger. With love from Germany 🤘 😎
I would say America hasn't been a role model since at least the Vietnam era. Wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, the thing in Libya etc. only cemented that view. It's a pretty basic critique of american cultural imperialism and the destruction of local cultures for a bland global monoculture.
I would agree with you. The song, in my opionion, is about the American arrogance that is perceived by non-Americans all over the world. I, as a non-American, am quite annoyed when I hear Americans say that their country and their way of life is the best the world has to offer. I think that it is not, as in my opionion the U.S. have more political and societal problems than for example Germany, the country that I come from. Once, an American exchange student told me about the greatness of his country and culture and that there is no better country in the world than the United States. I was quite annoyed, since he didn't take my German culture serious and kept telling me that American culture was so much better until I couldn't hear it anymore. I just told him: "Your country is not even 250 years old. How can your culture be superiour to one that has grown and developed for several hundreds of years. My favourite brewery is four times older than your country." Don't get me wrong: I appreciate American culture and the American people. Great things have come from the U.S. and I am also very thankful for the help that Germany received from America after World War II. I am just tired of people, who can't appreciate anything that isn't American. And that's why I am very critical of this process of "Americanization". Not everybody wants to live the American Way of Life and it is time that people understand this.
@@mp-rock7871 With all respect, age of a country does not in any way indicate that its culture or traditions are better than of a young country like the USA. I do not mean that USA culture is in superior to German, but the argument about country age is pure ageism ))
@@andykolodiy9755 you are conpletely right. I don't want to say that German culture is superior to American culture. Each culture has it's own right to exist and there is no such thing as an objectively better culture or a better way of life. What I meant with this statement is that I found it extremely rude and arrogant to tell me that my traditions which are several hundreds of years old were shit compared to American traditions. The point in comparing the age of my traditions to the age of the United States as a country was to show that by disrespecting the traditions that I follow, this guy disrespected generations of people who followed these traditions long before me. He just didn't acknowledge that American culture did not develop over the timespan of centuries and that it wasn't formed by a group of more or less homogenous people. Instead it was formed by people that came to America from all over the world, as you would expect from an immigrant country. Again: I don't want to say that American culture is inferior in any way.
@@mp-rock7871 I am from Australia and agree with you 100%. I cannto stand yanks either because of their self inflated sense of being number 1. In fact they are number 40+ in most areas of standards of living.
By the way, "This is not a love song" was a song by Public Image Limited, John Lydon's band after the demise of the Sex Pistols.

Delivery chain pizza is distinctly American, though. There are Papa John's and Domino's franchises all over the world now. I don't think Italians want to claim that.
@@mmmCrunchy sure, I agree with you there. That specific style of pizza seems very American to me. But from my perspective (and in my corner of the world) that came way later than actual Italian immigrants & seasonal workers running restaurants including delivery. ;)

I really liked your analasys of the song. Very thoughtful and rational. To even get more into the introspective (without any offense, solely to add to your analasys):
You, as an American, thought the message is somewhat like "America, please help us, not with Coca Cola, but anything actually useful.".
I, as a European, belive the message might be more like "Hey America, we really appreciate good intentions, but we don't necessarily need your help. Do not feel obligated."
Ofc, that's just my POV and I don't want to feel anyone offended by this. I tried to parathrase it to get this across, but english is a second language, so bare with me please ^^

I don't think Rammstein asked for America's money. They rather think the American government should not interfere with other cultures. Not to influence government of other countries as they did in South America. Not to be the police of the world. Leave the others do how they want, I think that's the message. I like American culture but not the way you government always tries to influence all the world. I get what you say, Doug, about to be able to connect with a lot of other people around the world, but your culture of money and always more cunsomption is bringing mankind to it's end… Well that's how I see it as a French guy grown up near the German border…

You should definitely go along with the newest Rammstein release "Zeit" which is a single from an upcoming album that's going to be released soon with the same title
Many countries have dark parts in their history, and that is perfectly normal. It only gets bad when one repeats those dark parts or tries to erase them from history or even spins and twists them around to make ones country appear all innocent and perfect.
This song was a reaction to the bands impressions on how the usa changed after 911 and the wars that came after that. It's obviously not a love song, but it's also not a hate song either. Imho they are poking fun at certain things, criticizing others. All with a light-hearted and cheerful song.
Yup, sometimes pointing out flaws is the best way to improve. Constructive criticism can be hard but is fundamentally positive. I think this song really brings a good positive message, I don't think it really is that antagonistic but rather introspective and bold.
Really an awesome band.

i've been listening to Rammstein since 1996, but strangely, i never got around to seeing their videos until just recently. They're very good at reinforcing the message of their songs! At the end of this video, when they pull back on the moon shot to reveal a set, i think they were riffing on the "moon landing hoax." The video is such great satire from beginning to end, and really sad at the same time. Like pretty much all their music, it seems simple on the surface, but there are definitely more layers which conjure great emotional and intellectual impact.
Hey Doug. As i german myself, i can pretty much understand the meaning of this song. I find it hard to tell american people what is actually wrong about the capitalism and their believes of what is good and what not. Some might call it european propaganda but their is some truth to this song. As a german i know how hard it is to live with the past we are kown for. But every country, even religions, made terrible mistakes in the past. That doesn't mean americans are bad people.
A few weeks ago I had a discussion on YT with an American about cultural influence. He: "Hollywood and we have Cheese Factory,," (I had to google it first). Germany and Europe are totally irrelevant"
Over here in America, globalization and the homogenation of culture worldwide is considered to be a European plot to extend the EU-style of absorbtion of national identities into an overriding international undemocratic dictatorship by committee, with the current attacks all focused on the United States and its traditional liberal democratic principles, because globalization cannot succeed until America has been pulled down into mediocrity.
Having offered that up, I think the real enemy exists in the elites ("The New Kings") who run every world-wide financial center. They have succeeded in only two generations in overturnig the prior system via the financialization of all hard assets world-wide and thereby creating a highly efficient system for the extraction and appropriation of all the wealth of the middle and lower classes. They even keep most of us ignorant of the new system by pitting the commoners against each other. Rammstein appears to have fallen head over heels for this ruse.

While I appreciate your more positive take, if you read the English lyrics, it's about America controlling the world, telling/showing people how to be, and if you get out of line, we'll help you to get back into step.
On a more poignant note, concerning your comment about the perception of America, I live in Toronto, Canada. From 2010-2014, I, practically, lived at Beer Bistro. On occasion, I would meet an American couple who were visiting/travelling through. During our discussions, at some point, the conversation would turn to their question as to 'how to Canadians see us?' When I asked why this was important, they would say 'because we don't know.' They, then, told me that most American news is very insular, directed inwards, and not focused on much outside the country. Of course, there is the internet; but local media, again, was directed more at themselves. It was always a great discussion, which I was grateful to have. Sometime later, I reached out to some friends who'd moved to/were living in the US and they confirmed what these travellers had said: that US news media is very insular. If anyone has some thoughts on that, I'd love to hear them. Best! J
Well, I can add something more about what you've said with my poor English. I live and born in Colombia here I see a lot travelers from Europe who come here because of interested in culture, they are the ones that is more easy to see in historical places while in rare occasion, maybe even never you see Americans there. It's like Americans tend to travel by typical touristic interest to take selfies and stuff than to try to understand things outside the bubble they live. You can see this too in their own culture with politicians that are always pointing out the great country that America is instead of showing how in a lot countries in Europe they have a better quality of life, better health system, better education ( not just university), etc. And of course so much more less interested in cultural things, just look how native Americans are there. @@profetsoul Hola! from Canada! I can see that. Years ago, before I met him, my friend's husband - obviously, before they married - was dating an American woman. When they went to Spain, he girlfriend was, like, 'why don't they speak English?' to which he said 'because we're in Spain. In Spain, the speak Spanish.' In 2000, I went to Scotland to visit a friend. On many occasions, I went off by myself. In some instances, people could tell I was Canadian before I told them. So, yes, stereotypes do exist. That said, 'I've met a lot of great Americans, just like I've met some fellow Canadians who are just the worst. I try not to be to hard-fast with stereotypes; but I get what you're saying.
It's because they are brought up to believe (brain washed?) that America is the greatest and freest nation on Earth
@@npg68 I can't deny that's a thought that hasn't crossed my mind; but this subject of 'free' is something I've thought about - a lot - during the pandemic, in particular, Freedom, and what it means to be 'free.' To be clear, non of us are 'free.' To prove this, don't pay your taxes; drive as fast as you like; knowingly/falsely slander someone's reputation online, etc. In short, we've chosen to give-up certain things (freedoms) to live/belong in society; however, we are free to make choices as to how we live our lives and conduct ourselves. What I think a lot of people fail to understand/appreciate is that Freedom is a responsibility, not the absence of it. Covid has been a great litmus test for this, because the simplest things we've been asked to do to help minimize its impact (wear a mask, get vaccinated, be mindful of what you're doing and how those action might effect those around you) have become talking points for the argument of 'Freedom.' In this case, however, Freedom implies a release from inconvenience. The same people who're screaming about 'Freeing ourselves from the tyranny of masks' (Dave Mustaine's quote. He might be a great guitarist, but he's an idiot, otherwise), who don't want to get vaccinated, or do anything to limit the spread of Covid are the ones who want this pandemic to be over, simply, because they don't want to be inconvenienced. Freedom has always had a cost. Take Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida, for example. He passed legislation prohibiting mask wearing in schools, saying that he 'just wants to see his little boys face without a mask.' Because of this, and other such policies, children - not to mention, most other people - went to the hospital/ICU when they didn't need to. But, children going to the hospital is ok in his version of 'Freedom,' so long as he isn't, personally, inconvenienced (and this shit-bag thinks he can become president?) I could go on, but my point is that 'Freedom' is a responsibility that we actively engage with, so that we might produce something more than ourselves that helps people, even if it doesn't, always, help us on an individual basis. That some people want to thing 'my body. my choice' just have no clue what they're talking about or how their actions might be costing others. (Apologies for the rant; but this has been a concern of mine, for some time. My very best to everyone.)
Doug, have you done any Deep Purple? If not I'm shocked because no rock band has as much classical influence as DP. Ritchie Blackmore even does a rendition of Beethoven's 9th, and you can hear his, and Bach's influence in just about every song.

I'd love to see you react to NOFX: The Decline. I'd say it's related in the sense that they too have powerful statements about America as well and The Decline is just a wicked awesome piece of music.

This video was really on the nose when it came out. Still is, in fact. Rammstein does a really good job combining their songs with visuals in music videos to be provocative and to make salient points about society and the world. The music's usually pretty good, too.

Damn Doug, you looked at this from a very politically aware point of view. Well done. Whether right wing or left wing is irrelevant, there’s some very real stuff here. I’m not American, I’m your neighbour to the north. I absolutely love the US and it’s citizens, but we both have our issues. Takes quite the awareness to see the real message here. Love it. We, the people of this world, are not all the same, nor do we have to be.

Funniest thing about this song is the fact that it seems like many Americans think that this song is about praising America even after watching this music video. I knew this before youtube was a big thing and now what i have seen in reactions videos (this one obviously not included)
Funny you chose this particular song. I had some third language studies in school and our teacher in German wanted to be down with the kids. So for an assignment we had to translate this song to Swedish. She probably chose it because it was newly released at the time and didn't pay as much attention to the lyrics as you did. Probably the only song they have that is relatively okay for children to listen to. I had heard Rammstein but hadn't really listened closely until then. My 60 year old teacher turned me into a fan. I didn't learn much German though. But if I read it I get the gist. Hearing it sung is too challenging. Even though I barely understand what they're singing I thouroughly enjoy their music. I think of Till's vocals as just another instrument, which vocals truly are.
I'm not a huge fan of Rammstein, but I do respect their stage shows and the messages in their songs. I love America, but with all of it's beauty, there are indeed some deep flaws and past aggressions that i'm very ashamed of.

I think the big difference is that, although pizza is not from US, it was the US who made junk fast food out of it. So the criticism here is not about introducing new recipes, but spreading the junk food culture.

Pizza has existed in America since 4000 BC. Tomatoes from America only first reached Europe in the mid 1600's but were not commonly used in Europe until the 19th Century. Duh Duh Duh.

Rammstein is also very upfront about Germany's checkered past. The song Deutschland in the video show many of Germany's failures in history. It states clearly that they are proud of their country, but are not afraid to show the hard truths of German history. Would be a fitting video to follow this with the next time you visit Rammstein.

Hello Doug! Why don't you react to some Avantgarde music from very obscure and not well known groups? I recommend you Devil Doll's ¨Dies Irae¨, the whole album is only a 45 minute song. Also the group Angizia, listen to ¨Ein Toter Fährt Gern Ringelspiel¨ it's in German, but their music is so different that it can't be labled or put in a category.
Better something like "Mr. Doctor" or "The girl who was death".

I love the double meanings in this song..It's like their song Deutschland, it has both love and hate in it at the same time..It criticizes the both intentional and unintentional effect the power of the USA brings. Maybe we have our own sodas, but here comes Coca Cola knocking.. Only USA celebrates thanksgiving, but a lot of the world knows of it from film, etc...I think overall your analysis is pretty spot on....

I wish our vision was truly that of being a humanitarian superpower, and that our activities and products and such worked toward that end, but sadly we are rather the largest purveyor of killing machines, large and small. And we have not been great stewards of this new century and millennium we have inherited. We need to inherit best practices from around the world, since we are the world, in micro. All the good, all the not so good.
That said, cool song. Catchy as whizz. Einsturzende Neubauten does a similarly catchy song called Nagorny-Karabach about that contested region of the world. They are among the best of "industrial music" from what little I know.

unfortunately the most U.S. citizens haven't seen other countries and never will be able to. This fact alone is one reason, why the most people of U.S. are narrow minded and uneducated about the world outside. All americans I know, who come to live here in europe, especially in Germany, changed their POV about everything in the States, after experience a much different life here.....
That's my german experience with the americans, too. So try to go out of your way, you cannot understand and even judge what you don't know. It is a mind-altering experience.
Check Laibach - Eurovision. Laibach is from Slovenia and Rammstein most likely own some of their style to them.

This is the most explicit song about the US's (selfstyled as American's) cultural hegemony (or imperialism) that I know. The reference to Public Image Ltd. (This is not a love song) is just the cherry on top.
The problem here is that people from the US (selfstyled as Americans) never even consider that people from outside their northamerican bubble might not see them as good people.
Its the very irony of the song (because its totally true) is why its still my favorite one out of their collection. The political commentary is very clever. The beat is great too. lol

What maybe most of you don't. The Rammstein guys were born and raised in East Germany (the russian, communist part of the former iron curtain). And after the fall of the Berlin wall and the german reunion, suddenly they lived in Amerika, the american way - wunderbar. With all the capitalism and the things money can buy. So I think the song is not only sealing with America but also with the american way of life after the iron curtain was gone that rules after the breakdown of communsim.
