Speaking as someone who _had_ lymphoma (a cancer related to leukemia) he does look kinda cancer-y. He used to be overly chubby but now he's gone a little far in the other direction, I think he's lost alot of weight a little too fast. I dont know anything about his situation, how he lost all the weight, or even his exact motivation (some sudden health problem, just wanting to get healthy, or just for looks) but i've known other people who've had that same look. In my experience it's either A: a sudden illness (I dont think thats why Sage lost all the weight though) or because they've done some sort of weight loss surgery, like a stomach band or something similar, and they've lost a ton of fat but they've either not gained any muscle or possibly even lost muscle mass due to the rapid weight loss. tl:dr, I think Sage would look better with either a bit more muscle or a few pounds extra.
Jeez ya! I knew too many who have died from "the big C" and that's why I find Sage's weight loss worrying. I myself have gone from 327 to 255 (fat wise) and then went back up to 267 by going to the gym and building muscle. I still have 30 lbs to lose *BUT* I want to do it in a healthy way. Whatever Sage is doing... It doesn't look *healthy!*
What i really appreciate of AA over other channels is how bennet reveals interesting, bizarre yet worthwhile. In an industry of oversaturation and good shows being missed, its always a pleasure finding hidden gems (Besides the rape)
I bought Orgus 02 randomly on VHS at a comic store in the mid 90's. Back then finding any anime was rare, and I liked Mecha stuff so I got it. It wasn't bad.
Orguss 02 was the first anime show I ever owned. Back when you had to pay $25 for a VHS tape that contained 2 episodes. And the closest store that sold anime was 30 miles away. Right now is a golden age for anime accessibility.
I have to personally say thanks for solving a personal mystery 16ish years in the making. I picked this up at my local Movie Gallery when I was a kid, but couldn't remember the name of it for the life of me. You helped solve a similar mystery with Iria way back when, but I didn't stop to leave a comment then. Again, thank you for putting this search to bed, Sage.
I really wish Bennett would start a version of Crunchyroll, but specifically for older forgoten animes like these. 60's 70's 80's stuff that most people don't know or care about anymore
There are a lot of hidden gems, as well as crap. The trashy ones deserve to be viewed as lessons for future animators & fan on how not to make a bad anime.
That someone else is Toshihiro Kawamoto for Orguss 02, who also designed the characters for Cowboy Bebop, various Gundams and Golden Boy. That's who I'm referring to.
Right, we're going in circles here. I'm aware from the beginning that Mikimoto originated the designs and Kawamoto refined his designs. So yeah, lets give them credit.
Orguss 02 is one of my favourite anime and is one of the ones that got me into Anime back in the mid to late 90's when they aired on Sci Fi at midnight on a Thursday in the UK
OHHH!!! I saw this anime once because it happened to be right next to FMA Conquer of shambala. At my best friend's library and I have been looking for over a decade. Thanks for the review Sage. DFTBA
Easily the episode of Anime Abandon I've enjoyed the most in a long time. A fascinating subject, great commentary, a treat to watch. Amazing work, Bennett!
This was one of my favourite anime's when I was younger. I thought it was incredibly interesting and very well made, and hinted at a much larger world. Plus at its route it was a classic kind of story of young farmboy (mechanic) gets thrust into a bigger story. Great memories.
Bennet I just want to say I caught your show back in 2013 for the first time and been a fan since, I've always wanted to watch Robotech and Gundam in order (either for free or on T.V. but neither seem possible without a trillion ads) and even if you don't think your covering it will "do them justice" I can't wait to see your Robotech episode.
Something from Orgus 1 that makes Orgus 2 easier to understand. 1) Female Erams can't reproduce after they turn 18, which is why the blue-haired girl's family only had one child per generation. They also don't have psychic powers. 2) The Colonel was the Lieutenant/Captain in Orgus 1 (Muu robot who helped the heroes and was destroyed in the last few episodes). He explains how he survived in Orgus 2. 3) One of the brown dinosaur-like creatures is most likely Javet, who accompanied the crew of Orgus 1. 4) Orgus 1 ended with the heroes trying to fix the problems they caused when they fired the Dimensional bomb. 5) The space elevator took the heroes to where they needed to go to fix the problem they caused.
I find the way she says bless you particularly curious. Her lack of hesitation or shakiness makes it sound like this is an everyday conversation to her. Creepy
Words cannot describe how happy I am to see this OVA being covered. As a teen I saw this as a flawed masterpiece I think- because of Manning and it's really high production value, but hampered by *that* line and the script generally. Also, that one point when someone yells about only using Decimators for war and destruction. Always felt really on the nose. The fuzzy recall of that line, the fact I totally forgot the hecking ROBORG and this review make me want to dig it and give it a watch with uninitiated friends. It might not be the best work, and the ending is... shoddy. But I felt the product as a whole was a rare different and excellent gem hidden in what we got on TV and in stores in the U.K.
Sage, Bennett, or whatever your chosen personal "handle" is, you may not read this comment ever apart from so many others but holy damn I have to commemorate your work, as I've watched it for a few years now and what also strikes me is your personal tribute to human perseverance, your effort to take your own health of being to your own hands for a good time now. I don't use Twitter but I picked up from links that you've been at it for a good while now. Keep it up. Really. You have the guts and will power. The change has been notable for many episodes now, but still. Go, you glorious bastard! Not to distract the subject too much, any chance of you diving into Rurouni Kenshin anytime ever..?
Holy crap! I hadn't seen your videos in years! I just stumbled across your channel again and i'm very very happy! but you look amazing! I hope you feel as good as you look.
Hey, Bennett! I hope you're having a wonderful day. I just wanted say I've been watching for years, and I'm so happy to see you've taken some steps to treat yourself better. You're looking really good! I hope you're practicing proper nutrition and such, keep it up!
I never watched the Pretty Sammy OVAs, but the Pretty Sammy TV series (retitled "Magical Project S" and released in a subtitled-only format stateside because they apparently lost total faith in Pretty Sammy and didn't want to spend dubbing costs) wasn't bad. Entertainingly amusing, actually.
Both are... a thing. Now if you want true mind-blowing watch the later spin-off Sasami's Magical Girls Club, season 1 is sailor moon goes to hogwarts, season 2 makes such a hard left it almost jumps genres with assassins being sent after grade school kids and the emo girl getting possessed by the venom symbiote made of human suffering and hate.
Holy crap Sage! You are looking great. I havent watched you in awhile and the change is amazing. Gratz you look very healthy...... knowing my luck you got cancer or an eating disorder in the meantime so i look like a complete ass..... If you are not dying, you look really good.... Your content is great either way
I remember watching this, like in 2004 i was on a mecha anime kick, when i rented this from video 112 even at 12 i could see the missed awesomeness. I can forgive an anime for being just subpar from beginning to end, it's wasted potential that drives me nuts
why is it brian cranston is always "allegedly" in anime? i can think of three dubs he's allegedly voiced in...why isn't there confirmation? why doesn't he come out and admit it? from what i recall the one's he's in have been pretty good
A lot of anime is produced by non-union production companies, which can cause problems if you're a member of the Screen Actors' Guild or other groups. Which is part of why most voice actors - especially the ones who work primarily in anime have a bunch of stage names, to allow for at least some plausible deniability when it comes to working on those non-union productions. While Richard Epcar or Steve Blum can probably get away with saying "yeah, I'm also this guy", a big name actor might not.
Great job on your exercise program sage! I know it took a lot of work. I'm proud of you for reaching your goal. (I've been watching you since your game reviews)
"Sometimes, life makes it pretty difficult to like something, but that doesn't mean you can't like it." For some reason, I felt like I needed to hear that.
16:25- I think it is basing on Claudius, who pretended to be meek to survive the Julio Claudian's intrigue (not that he last long with Agrippina and Nero), Sejanus (ambitious Pratorian Prefect plotting against Julio Claudians), and Caligula (Mad, young, and impetuous Emperor).
The reason I liked TTGL is because of Kamina embodying the character archetype of Lt. Manning and Roy Fokker that I've seen in older anime. Whenever they appear there's 99.99% that I would like it.
Manning's voice actor, John Synder has done work after Orguss 2 like Jigen in Castle of Cagolistro, E. Honda in Street Fighter 4, Cliff Schezar in Trigun, and still works on recent anime like Hunter X Hunter and Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans. Only him and the voice actress for main female character did work after Orguss.
I don't quite agree with the ending being terrible, it does take a drastic shift I'll admit, but I like how they incorporated the connections between this and the original orguss by that point. I will say the resolution does feel rushed and the villain's motivation was rather random. Orguss 02 I think is overally pretty solid, I'd say I actually like it as much as the original for almost the same reason you have said about it.
His ears are sharp enough to recognize different engines, but your surprised he could tell his boss was hurt? The guy was in a ton of pain and he could probably hear it in his voice.
Used to see that back a long time ago in the early 2000's era. Back when the Internet wasn't as advanced as it is now and there was no Facebook and RUclips was hardly a thing also there was still Blockbusters and Malls around as well as payphones not smartphones.
15:29 This scene was used in a SCXCR review of, I think, War Gods and, wow... had no idea it was from this anime. Granted only that specific line was used. I didn't know the context behind it.
Oh dear. Orguss, I haven’t seen it. I’ve watched two parts of Robotech (Southern Cross is dead to me) and experienced the Maccross Series (How I wish I could forget that Maccross 7 is treated as Cannon yet I cannot say the series had promise). Orguss, I have no clue as to how you could fit that in aside from the fact of the Dimensional Bomb being involved. All three Sagas of Robotech you could argue and see how it all fits. By that same token, even the job they did do was at least done ok if one read the Novels. My hatred of Southern Cross runs deep. Enough of that I’ll see you Sage in April with more Tenchi.
WOAH WOAH WAIT A SECOND! I decided to check out Sage's videos for the first time today. I just got done with three 2015 videos and I saw that there was a new one out. WHAT HAPPENED?! Was it just a diet that worked really well, or is he sick and kind of stuck at that body type?! Holy crap talk about a change! I just can't tell if it's for the better or for the worse!
This anime and Turn A Gundam are very similar to eachother. Both are set in the far future which is reminiscent of the early 20th century and both have their societies uncovering mecha from the past.
the first volume vhs from Manga Video of Orguss 02 was the first anime i ever bought, and i adored it. we moved after that and my younger brother made friends with a kid who just happened to have volume 2. i didnt pick up volume 3 until years later when i saw it at a suncoast video. am i dating myself here?

As funny as it is to watch Sage rip bad anime apart. It is so much more enjoyable to listen to him talk about anime he legitimately finds good.
both equally entertaining in their own ways
Damn. Sage is looking really good in this episode.
Good work, man.
Good?!
He looks like he has leukemia!
You can see his orbital bones.

Maybe he's on chemo.

I’d pay for that every month.
RetroCrush?
16:35 THAT IS WHERE THAT LINE COMES FROM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! seen that picture in 4chan all over. I even saved it a few years ago and today I finally know
Even thumbnail Sage has slimmed down
Character designer is the same guy who did Cowboy Bebop.
This guy's everywhere.
Macross & Orguss character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto did the original Orguss 2 character designs that were then refined by someone else.
That someone else is Toshihiro Kawamoto for Orguss 02, who also designed the characters for Cowboy Bebop, various Gundams and Golden Boy. That's who I'm referring to.
Yes, but Mikimoto *originated* the designs, Kawamoto then refined them for the production. Just saying, let's give credit where credit is due, yes?
Right, we're going in circles here. I'm aware from the beginning that Mikimoto originated the designs and Kawamoto refined his designs. So yeah, lets give them credit.
Wow! I was rewatching some of your older videos and suddenly realized how much weight you've lost. Good for you, man!
Nothing makes me smile like seeing this in my feed

Hey Sage good job on the weight loss bud. Doesnt feel like it was that long since I last saw you, but now I can see we have the same jawline ;D
I loved this show.
Like the anime's opening theme and that robots voice is jarring when you pointed it out.
What's even worse about that line is that, after she leaves, he says, "I sure get sick of playing the good guy all the time." Yeah, okay, buddy.
Well this was a surprise, nice new look Sage!
You have lost a lot of weight since you started!!!! I deeply congratulate you
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
god bless, now i know where those brilliant lines were from
that was nostalgic. that was like the third anime I bought in the 90s
Hey, Bennett! I hope you're having a wonderful day. I just wanted say I've been watching for years, and I'm so happy to see you've taken some steps to treat yourself better. You're looking really good! I hope you're practicing proper nutrition and such, keep it up!
You have a lot of great points and zingers in this one Sage. Great Episode my friend!!!
Awesome show sage. I'm chomping at the bit for robotech. I'll take what I can get.
I'm glad he liked Orguss 02 and recommends it, despite the faults.
I miss this anime. I rented the first ova back in 1995.
I love your work Bennett, keep doing your amazing work

I would've waited an eternity for this.
Turns out I only had to wait a few months.
Thanks Bennett.
Damn son! Looking great! Way to go!
I remember watching this, like in 2004 i was on a mecha anime kick, when i rented this from video 112 even at 12 i could see the missed awesomeness. I can forgive an anime for being just subpar from beginning to end, it's wasted potential that drives me nuts
That Cybernetic Ghost comparison was spot on!
18:48 Eww, spit.
why is it brian cranston is always "allegedly" in anime? i can think of three dubs he's allegedly voiced in...why isn't there confirmation? why doesn't he come out and admit it? from what i recall the one's he's in have been pretty good
He's a super famous actor now and anime is still looked down upon in pop culture at large.

shit that tear scene had me laughing, that guy is sure in a league of his own. even if i may not watch this i appreciate you covering it, keep it up!
Hell yeah more tenchi
Brilliant review as always Sage! Gotta love those zany "WTF" lines!
"Sometimes, life makes it pretty difficult to like something, but that doesn't mean you can't like it."
For some reason, I felt like I needed to hear that.
Jesus dude, I’m proud of your weight loss. Really inspiring.
Holy ... sage you have change a lot since I've last seen you. You look good 🖒
On the way home from work in 2002 I had to choose between orguss02 and mega zone 23 part one. So there's another what if.
My boy Sage hittin that p90x, god d** my boy keep doin your thing
The reason I liked TTGL is because of Kamina embodying the character archetype of Lt. Manning and Roy Fokker that I've seen in older anime. Whenever they appear there's 99.99% that I would like it.

Orguss 02 remains in the company of movies that are known only for memeable lines.
You make a very valid point, mysterious alien wearing Sage as a skin suit.👽
Bennett now looks like the American counterpart of Jacksepticeye, if you squint your eyes a little harder.
This anime reminds of Broken Blade... and I like it.
(sees Tenchi Muyo case)
Tenchi Muyo? But I thought you liked Tenchi Mu-
(sees "Mihoshi")
...ooh...right...
Dude, you look amazing!
His ears are sharp enough to recognize different engines, but your surprised he could tell his boss was hurt? The guy was in a ton of pain and he could probably hear it in his voice.
I haven’t watched your videos in a while. Holy Cow, you’ve lost weight. Awesome!
Used to see that back a long time ago in the early 2000's era. Back when the Internet wasn't as advanced as it is now and there was no Facebook and RUclips was hardly a thing also there was still Blockbusters and Malls around as well as payphones not smartphones.
Bro I just have to say one thing. U look awesome!! Good job!!!
Looking suave, Sage. Keep up the good work!
I liked Orguss 02, it was good anime for its time.
*Pulls out Pretty Sammy: Ohhhhh, you are in trouble.
SAGE!!!!!!! YEEEAAAHHHYAH!!! (Vash Starwind is doing the excited Kermit the Frog with his arms flailing)
i swear this series's setting gave it the same vibes as Turn A Gundam and Zoids Genesis.
Considering the dip in quality at the end, the Game of Thrones comparison ended up being really on point lol
Manning is one of the few things I remember from Orguss 02.
and he never got to robotech...
15:29 This scene was used in a SCXCR review of, I think, War Gods and, wow... had no idea it was from this anime.
Granted only that specific line was used. I didn't know the context behind it.
darn sage you really are losing weight. i see it in your face well done
I just cannot wait until he Reviews Dokuro Chan with insanity ensues and heads explode (literally).
Lt. Manning: the Flashman of anime
"Bless you!"
Wow sage has lost weight, what's his routine? Like seriously I've watched anime abandoned since the beginning, and Bennett is doing awesome!
he gave his weight to Linkara i guess
DasKame I have not watched linkara in at least 3 years. But I do like his reviews, it's just kinda hard to keep up with his own channels plot.
DasKame damn
You really *Macek-ered it* rest in peace Carl Macek
Dude you are loosing a lot of weight! Keep going dude, your doing great!
US Rendition...ahhhhh...such memories...
Its so weird seeing you get slimmer and slimmer over time.Props for the weight loss :D
This anime and Turn A Gundam are very similar to eachother. Both are set in the far future which is reminiscent of the early 20th century and both have their societies uncovering mecha from the past.
Looking good post time skip sage. Keep it up homie!!!
Whoa, check out that chestee Wendee Lee! :0
Its Slim Sage. He's just as fast but not as powerful as regular Sage!
Best-Worst Line EVER
"People die when they are killed" -- Fate Stay Night
Loosing some weight there sage.
You're looking good :D
yay so excited for the next episode
I'm glad I'm not the only one completely unsatisfied with how Desert Punk ended. What a great/good show until it just gives up trying.
the first volume vhs from Manga Video of Orguss 02 was the first anime i ever bought, and i adored it. we moved after that and my younger brother made friends with a kid who just happened to have volume 2. i didnt pick up volume 3 until years later when i saw it at a suncoast video. am i dating myself here?
Elf Blood will flow for thousands of years
Hey we're progressing in the anime covered on AA, at least they're just threatening rape and not actually committing it.
Progress!
I can appreciate a well paced anime. Given how "Snails pace" is often the outright standard. Heck I used to like Steven Universe (not an anime) because it seemed to get done in one 10 minute episode what others take several... But now it hit the brakes HARD and the show has adopted the snail pace compounded by its TERRIBLE schedule. It shows that pacing is important.
Or alternatively one can consider it CN hurting the show.
"until next time"
*sees what is being held aloft*
And that is when the prayers for Bennett's sanity begin.
With what he's been through over the years of Anime Abandon I am surprised he and us who have watched every show have any sanity left.
