I remember watching Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall make marshmallows from scratch during one of his season's of "River Cottage" (a UK food/farming/cooking show). They never touched on the Mallow plant as his version mostly used egg whites and vegetarian gelatin (made from seaweed) and dyed pink with beetroot. That said, I'd never heard of astronauts using them that way... and if they are putting them in their noses... well... maybe skip s'mores, candied sweet potatoes or anything else involving them if you're round there house. I mean, they might claim they're straight from the store... but... would you trust them 100%?
