    Whoo-hoo! Got it! (I'll admit that I'm playing it at only about 2/3 of the speed that you play it on this video, but it's getting there!) Thank you, Mr. Pankey. Four and a half months ago I began with Lesson One of your 10-lesson RUclips series. What a tremendous difference it makes to learn from an outstanding teacher! And what a genuine pleasure it is too!

    What a great tune, unusual and with surprising and melodic elements. And a big challenge to learn, at least for me. But Jim breaks it down in his very lovely style to manageable pieces, somewhat like the old saying how to eat an elephant bite by bite. I'm finally making some progress now and are currently working at the 2nd break. Somewhat like a huge puzzle that I enjoy learning it so much. Bought your tabs so you can enjoy a beer or to from me, cheers!

    Thank you for offering the tab on this one, Jim. The extra help and added break really makes this one challenging but rewarding. After watching a number of different excellent musicians, like you, the vast majority of them are not good teachers...at least using RUclips as a teaching tool. You however, are really good at it! Now, I know you can play at lightning speeds, most good players can. However, speed in my humble opinion is a bit irritating. A nice clip is great because we can hear every note. So, thank you Jim, thank you.

    Isn't it played with a capo at the 3rd fret? I learned the guitar part and I learned it that way. Plus if you watch the Andy Griffith Show, the guitar is capoed at the 3rd fret. I don't play banjo so I am guessing.

    • @JimPankey
      @JimPankey  3 года назад

      And sometimes it’s played capoed at the 4th fret. I’ve also seen it capoed at 3. So…. Play it capoed where you want. Doesn’t change how the tune is played.

    Hey Jim, great video, I'm about 2/3 rds of the way through and picking it up well, great teaching method, I like to get one section of pat (slow speed) before moving on to the next. I've owned a banjo for about 2 years now but my playing was irregular as some teachers I find are more about how good they are rather than teaching. Since watching your videos I'm playing every night now and it's coming on grand, keep up the great work buddy, Davy.

    • @JimPankey
      @JimPankey  Год назад

      Without restringing your guitar it could be difficult.
      It's all fun and games until you get to the fifth string.
      1st string is D
      2nd string is B (just like guitar)
      3rd string is G (just like guitar)
      4th string is D (yup, like guitar)
      and here's where it's tricky:
      5th string is G - and octave higher than you 3rd string.
      You can probably get a .009 to tune up to that G... I'd probably use a .008
      Good luck!

      @@JimPankey the first part is hard cause I keep screwing up on the roll pattern. The rest of it is simple.

      then skip that part until you can do it. I'd recommend going back and practicing my Super Simple Ballad of Jed Clampett where I first introduce that shape. It's always good to master the simpler things before diving headfirst into the deep end.

    Your intro is completely wrong--try again there is NO E until after the walkdown but oh yeah you 'interpret' it--If you are going to teach it teach it RIGHT

      So? This is how I play it. If you already know how it goes, then this shouldn’t be an issue? You’re also welcome to post a video of the “correct” way.

      One negative comment in 116- not bad! But going to your channel and seeing that comments are turned off tells the whole story- some people can dish it out but not take it. Not that Jim needs any help defending his instruction, nowhere on his channel does he say this is the only way to play these songs- these are all Jim's versions, and he clearly says as much- AND encourages his students to develop their own versions, as well as developing their own song versions using licks that he teaches. It is truly rare to find someone who loves music so much that they just want to share it with others, and most of us appreciate it. If you are so into perfection, maybe the math world would better suite you, and leave the art to professionals like Jim!
