- Continuing my voyage round Monmouthshire I went to the West Monmouthshire. The highest course in the UK.
I might just have got emotional out there on the hills. The course, the views, the sunshine, the score.
Did I mention the course is outstanding??????????
Greenfee is only £15 at that price I think you should pay it a visit. Check to see what the wind is doing, I imagine it's really tough when it blows.

The back 9 has got some really good holes on it. Tune in in 5 days to see some amazing holes and some amazing shots. Plus the highest teebox in the UK.
Another great blog Simon. What a brilliant looking course. Looking forward to the back 9
The back 9 has 3 amazing par 3's. Plus the highest tee box. Great course Fourwood.
Wow what a course, and such amazing value. Another brilliant upload, fantastic to witness such stunning courses with you, golf lesson appears to be helping with your recent swing struggles, good job.
Hi Kev, I hit a few pop up drives about 190 yards. You'll see a few on the back 9. But also 3 great par 3's. The golf lessons help but I'm still stuck between 2 stools, old and new.
Hello Simon, I was the 1 that approached you on the 5th/11th… was very nice to meet you glad you enjoyed West Mon it’s a hidden gem you are welcome back any time sir.
Hi Carl, glad you were patient for it to come out. I've got to work several weeks ahead just in case of bad winter weather closing my home course.
West Mon is an amazing natural layout, I was blown away all the way round. I don't need to tell you what I thought of the par 3's on the back 9, you already know how good they are. I'd put all 3 in the top 10 I've played anywhere in the world.
I'm coming back next summer and bringing the kids. They both took up golf over lockdown. I say kids, they are 22 and 25. We will pick a day when the wind has laid down and the sun is out. What I day I had and how lucky I am.
Looking good Simon!!! 🤙🏾😎
That uphill par 5 looked cool!
That's nothing Marcel. Wait for the back 9. The 16th. 244 yard par 3.
@@thehairygolfer that’s crazy
@@BAD_GolfHawaii You'll love it when you see it. I bet you say "I wanna try that"
Wow what a steel of a round. Extreme 360 view and a greenfee that I've never encountered by far in NL. Nice Simon. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
It was nice to play somewhere without trees! I could not believe the greenfee when i looked it up online. I go higher up the hill on the back 9.
@@thehairygolfer Awesome 🤘🏻😎👍🏻
Played here today Simon after watching your videos. Gotta say I loved it! Never played a course quite like it! 👍
It's very different Robert. Those downhill holes just amazed me. And such a warm welcome in the bar. Did you get your certificate?
@@thehairygolfer unfortunately we had to shoot straight off after the round so didn't get it, but already making plans to return so will be sure to grab it next time.
@@Robk363 Cool. I meant to go back again but time just doesn't stop ticking. Hope the wind lays down for you, I plan way in advance when I go to hilltops and watch the weather like a hawk.
Fantastic course Simon. I must play it. My wife and I have just got back from a golfing holiday in Tenerife. Very enjoyable bug the courses are a lot more than £15 !! I cant believe how good this course is for the money
David. Plan ahead. I was watching the weather forecast to get a day when it wasn't windy. I got lucky with the sunshine. We had a week of great weather after our washed out August. They are lovely people in the clubhouse too.
Hi Simon, great video of my home course. Can’t wait to see what you made of the back 9. You certainly picked the right day! Definitely need to play it in the wind, it’s a totally different course with teeth 👍
I saw some of the back tees Lee. That course must be a monster in the wind. I loved it. So natural and so pretty. The par 3's on the back 9 are absolutely amazing. But I don't fancy it in the March medal! I'm useless in the wind, always have been.
Great video Simon. Course looks great. Putting was tough that day
I couldn't get the pace Miles. It gets better on the back 9 as I get used to it. I enjoyed no trees to get stuck behind. Could really open the shoulders a bit.
I have days like that. Even worst when the practice green doesn't roll like the actual greens.
@@MilesMartinGolf Practice greens can be a nightmare. I leave them alone except for 4 footers. I don't want to get the pace of 20 footers and then go out and putt badly.
Wow, just wow!!! No, not you driving (just!) 282 yards and missing the 4-footer for eagle (though the was impressive in itself, and the putt showed the frustration of a "proper" golfer!!!!), but what a lovely course and for £15 (was that just for the front 9????) that is amazing for that sort of quality. It looks very much like my kind of course too - slightly scruffy with beautiful greens and par 4's that stretch the imagination, rather than the length of your 2nd shot! I'm looking forward to the back 9. Oh, and excellent scoring too Simon, level par (?) around any course, particularly one that you don't play often, is something to be proud of. Well done!
That drive was really good. So stunned I didn't even react to it on the tee. I could see this little white dot bouncing up the fairway and onto the green. I was nervous over that putt!
I was so surprised by the quality of the turf and the greens. I was expecting the usual hilltop rock hard experience but it was wonderful. Yeah it was level, surprising how having no trees really builds your confidence. The back tees were a long way back so I was blessed to be playing the tees of the day. I think 1 hole on the back 9 is 90 yards longer. Plus I picked a day when the wind wasn't blowing much, that was key. And only £15, they have 280 members and the course was really quiet. I'm going back next year.
My camera would be clicking a lot on that course. Stunning course.
I was amazed at how far I could see and almost that there was nothing to see! A few wind farms but a completely uninterrupted view. You don't get that often on a golf course. I loved it.
Damn Simon you almost had an albatross on that par 4! Really nice drive there! Solid front 9 with a few birds! Amazing course and the greens look so pure! I don't think you can get find a better course to play for that price. Love those views from the hill tops! I think you were in your element here! Look forward to seeing how you play the back 9!
I was so shocked on that tee shot seeing it bounce onto the green and roll up I didn't even react for the camera! It could have been a hole in one!
360 degree view and no trees to get stuck behind. Wait until you see the 16th par 3. It's amazing!
The greens were great, the exact opposite of other hilltop courses I have played. They really would take a shot.
@@thehairygolfer I was expecting some type of reaction there. For a second I thought maybe you forgot to record your second shot and you chipped it up from there. They say act like you've been there before and you did just that!
@@ChiliDippaGolf I have driven short par 4's before. I was just glued to that ball running up the green. I couldn't believe my own eyes.
If you watch it on a big tv you can see the ball heading for the green. It looks great till it gets out of sight.
Played West Mon in November about 30 years ago. Cost about a fiver. Day was dry and bright and with very little wind so not too cold. Remember the fairways being very lush. The ball sat up as though on a low tee. Pros may like tight lies but I need a bit of help. Course was empty mid week and although I played awful with those views I still enjoyed the day. Your video makes me determined to go back for another try. Keep up the good work Simon. PS Also played Tain Golspie and Brora about the same time. Prices then were similar. Now about 5 times as much. Feel sorry for aspiring Scottish golfers.
Hi Nicholas, I had an amazing time, absolutely gobsmacked with the course. I need help on the fairways too! I'm going back next year and taking my 2 kids. I say kids, they are in their 20's!
I'll look up the other 2 courses as I want to play more golf in Wales. Cheers
I've never played this course, as it has never appealed to me, but it looks really nice. One to add to the list for next summer i think. I bet its a bit bleak up there this time of year.
Hi Darren, I really looked ahead at the weather forecast. I'm under no illusions as to how hard that course plays when it's windy. If you're going next summer keep an eye on the forecast and pick your day carefully.
Absolutely amazing green fee for nowadays! The course looks really nice and you seem to be swinging really nicely. Personally I’ve never particularly liked tee shots over stakes, I like to see where I’m going, that’s why I like parkland courses I suppose. But, for that price you really can’t go wrong can you! Look forward to seeing your next vid Simon, cheers and be happy. 👍🏌️🍺
Hi Jeff, I don't mind straight holes with a stake. It's when there is a little dogleg you don't know about. I was starting to swing a little better. I had a purple patch for 2 weeks and enjoyed it. Now we are down to once a week golf and cold it's going off the boil. Our greens are still good though, they haven't raised the cutting height yet.
The next vid has some fantastic par 3's on it.
I do like Parkland but that was a very nice change.
Over all scoring well. Good news for you mate Thailand is opening up for tourists on Nov1 mate
Hi Brian, I just going to sit back and watch and see what happens. I did try to look up flights but EVA aren't flying anywhere at the mo and there is very little choice. A nice par round, helps not having trees to intimidate you.
Spectacular views but a lot of blind shots. You played well again, good striking, shame about the eagle attempt, but a great drive. Where is this course?
Hi Andy, it's on top of the hill (why did I say that?) just outside Ebbw Vale on that new valley road they are building out of Abergavenny. It's not far.
It's surprising how having no trees can fill you with the confidence to open your shoulders a bit rather than trying to guide it and hitting bad shots. I did my homework on the weather and managed to pick a day when the breeze was down a bit. I can't imagine how hard it is when it blows up there. Would you play a March medal in 4 clubs of wind and horizontal rain? The locals do! Very hardy people up there.
those sheep on the 3rd may not have made it with my occassional driver stinger haha
They may not have made it if I remember my wellies......
15 quid is unbelievable value considering the condition and the views! Incredible shot on that short par 4, you been working out?
Great value. Nah. Downhill and downwind. I didn't even react to the shot - just watched it bounce and roll up the green.
Great course , tough if the wind blows . Are you posting the Monmouthshire vid soon ? Keep up the good work .
Hi Simon, the vids come out every 5 days. So back 9 next and then the Monmouthshire. I picked my day to visit very carefully - I'm hopeless in the wind so I chose well.
@@thehairygolfer A good decision
Knobjockey!! How the fcuk did you miss that eagle!!!! I even swore at you through the TV HG 🤬
There are 2 possible reasons I missed.
1. I got nervous. (But I wasn't).
2. I'm a cock. (most likely answer)
3. I 3 jabbed the par 5 9th too! So I'm a cock.
As someone who is fairly regular playing Painswick I'll love to know what you think about Liam's(golfmates) round there. I just watched it, he shot a very good score.
He played Painswick? I'll go see what he did. He does like a short golf course.
Played there some years back when I was working in Ebbw Vale. Great track. Did you get a certificate to say you had played the highest course?
I did Stuart. It features at the end of the next video. Some amazing par 3's on the back 9.
Yes it is a special course. Although I did unintentionally hit a sheep on one hole 😳
@@stuart7523 The sheep were all cowering in the shelter round the 17th green. I managed a decent tee shot so they weren't in harms way.
There did leave me presents on the 10th green to negotiate.
