Since nearly everything has become politicized (from the car you drive or music you like), it leads to lots of engagement (more likes, comments, and views=more money) in which each side tries to "own" the other side with the more outrageous in-your-face stances. Social media has essentially given people who were once mostly dismissed as insane a platform spread their neurosis to millions and normalize it.
I think you underestimate the influence of outside forces. Kids have gotten very good at tuning out, they ignore things they don't want to hear. It comes from being overexposed to information and the need to parse out good information in a sea of information. They have to discard or disregard information, and the easiest way to do that is to disregard information that hurts their worldview. People are taking the path of least resistance, but now that they are so selfish, they ignore the implications of their actions to society.

At 29 she had our son. My career supported us through her medical school. We've contributed equally to marriage, raising kids, and financially. It was challenging at times but with good planning it's worked out just fine.
