International pressure has forced the Zambian government to move former President Kenneth Kaunda from prison and put him under house arrest.
Kaunda - who stands accused of mounting a coup attempt will also be barred from political activities.
However, it is not yet clear if the 73-year-old former president - considered the father of Zambia's independence - will be released or how long he will continue to be detained.
It was here - to a high-security prison north of Zambia's capital, Lusaka that the country's former President Kenneth Kaunda was taken after his arrest on Christmas Day.
He was jailed on December 25th soon after returning to Zambia from a trip abroad, accused of being behind an October 28th coup attempt.
Here he's meeting former Tanzanian leader, Julius Nyerere, one of many pressuring Zambia's government to either try Kaunda or release him.
The United States, Britain, South Africa, Botswana, Libya and the Organization for African Unity had all called for Kaunda to be put on trial or be released.
And on Wednesday, their appeals seem to have been heard.
In a national T-V address, Zambia's President Chiluba remembered Kaunda's days of greatness.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"To governments in the region, we appreciate their concern. We appreciate their concern about Dr Kaunda, who was our leader during the liberation time. He led Zambia, and we can't take this away from him."
SUPER CAPTION: Frederick Chiluba, President of Zambia
Kaunda will be placed under house arrest, not kept in jail, he said.
But he will face strict restrictions -- including no political activities.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And so I listened to my elder statesmen and they are saying 'Keep him away from prison' so I called an emergency cabinet meeting last night and I informed them, and we agreed that we will not keep him in prison, we will move him from there and restrict him in his own house so that the former First Lady doesn't have difficulties in seeing my dear elder brother, Dr Kaunda. He will consequently be restricted in his own home but there are conditions on these restrictions and I hope he cooperates because if he doesn't we may be compelled to take him back to where he thinks he must stay."
SUPER CAPTION: Frederick Chiluba, President of Zambia
Kaunda led Zambia to independence from Britain in 1964.
He ruled the southern African nation for 27 years until he lost to Chiluba in the nation's first multiparty elections in 1991.
But it's not clear when the 73-year-old former president, would actually be released.
One Zambian leading the fight in Kaunda's support -- his son, a former army major -- here, leading a noisy demonstration outside Lusaka's High Court.

Chiluba wasn't a true democrat.... it was bad of him to restrict the freedom of movement for retired President Kaunda...
Arrogance and lack of respect for your elders never ends well.
Chiluba was one of the worst leaders in Zambia. Grand corruption found it's doors through chiluba. All industries went down the drain through chiluba. Zambia totally collapsed. If it was not for Mwanawasa's able leadership, we would have reached where Zimbabwe is.
Much respect to Mwalimu nyerere....May he rest in peace...true elder
That was a very stupid thing Chiluba did to kaunda
What a world, ba Chiluba RIP, KK is still going strong, living Gracefully, Gratefully & Peacefully.
I have been told a lot of stories concerning this move by elders. Julius Nyerere paid him visit wow they so close friends! I have a picture of him greeting my dad when he was a special envoy to Dar e salam
History....these clips should be kept sound and safe. It was not too long ago when we witnessed this event. But the vehicles used really look old now. This is how the things we treasure today quickly depreciate in value as time moves on. Only God is forever old, latest and future model
There is no modern in Gods hands
Amen
How wonderful it is seen my grandfather.. Julius nyerere, such a powerful leader
Kaunda had suffered twice. During the fight for independence and during Chiluba's time, Ooops!! Mukobeko prison
I've read a lot about chiluba,,, a really painful time for his people from the pain he inflicted.
It should never have happened. It was a grave mistake whose consequences are still being paid.
Was and still a greatest leader. always respect leaders before you!
We seem to forget very quickly. He said something in connection with the O.P. and his advisors. Bakachepa.
You must also watch who you surround yourself with. This is how we mess up. Watch out when you are in authority or financially sound. Listen to your poor parents and not friends for advice.
The arrogance in FTJ’s speech
That moment pr.Kaunda with my pr. Nyerere. Both were great leaders.
This was sad,
congratulations to Mwalimu Nyerere
This marked the beginning of the end of Chiluba, may his soul rest in peace. He cursed himself by mistreating Kaunda this way
And because of this, Chiluba is currently the most hated of all former Zambian presidents and Kaunda and Mwanawasa may be the most loved
The ka short man was a crook
2020am here
Most thieves speak excellent English. This one was a good prayer. He used religion very well.
This was the beginning of the end for Chiluba. He damaged his legacy for cheap political gains.
Gosh, this was wrong, sorry
This was awful
RIP hero
i always ask my self how is mandela is named as africa father while the great leader like Nyerere is not, how was it happened
With respect Mandela WA made famous by the western media, in my personal opinion this was done for their (western people) owns interest. I hold the view that in terms of greatness, Mandela can't measure up to Nyelele and our very own KK
African politics pisses of Mugabe once asked same question , at African Union why everything is named by Mandela but no one recognise the work Julia's mwalimi Nyerere does
@@muchmuleya9651 because Mandela was considered more liberal unlike nyerere who was pro communist. The west made sure nyerere is not credited for his contributions in anti colonial struggles.
so sad ...rip Dr Kenneth Kaunda
Yes
This was not good at all
This is a true house arrest not ya ecl
please you destroyed us
Kaunda did nothing wrong. How did he destroy you?
I think Ni Zi meant Chiluba
@@chigwesibanyama1148 Kaunda killed so many people in the name of dictatorship. He oppressed people. It's not true to say he never did anything wrong
Why all these cops
what was kaundas crime?
back then when police was professional.
Ok
Okay
3rd term
He pretended to be born again christian but he was a snake.
We jailed our founding father. Kwena we are idiots. That is why we shall never develop. Twalitipwa.
It shouldn't have happened
Not good at all
This was foolishness at its best
This
Chiluba was a dog
