What a well versed person in engineering principles this chap is, personally, I am very impressed with the way he goes about the tasks that challenge him, well done kris the results are magical
Having Sam @splatilus helping you has really increased your build speed. You’re very fortunate to have such a willing and capable volunteer and we are even more fortunate to have the videos to watch of the amazing progress the 2 of you are making. Thank you Sam for helping Kris and adding to our enjoyment of the build.
You are a very sane man, Kris. All you do is thought about, reasoned, and has a coherent ethic. You are the channel I most enjoy each weekend. May you be well, may you be happy, may you be free from suffering. I am missing your cat and Dot. Sam seems to be one of those people who make life worth living.
I'll be starting my off-grid house in 2 months. I need to download all your videos, so that I can watch them later in the times with no or bad Internet. I've learned a lot from your series, and I learn from every single episode. I really appreciate you dissecting things, so that others can understand it too.

I love that your videos are so straightforward, just pure knowledge and skill with simple explanation. And your skills and knowledge are amazing! Thanks for letting the rest of us watch🤗🐝❤️
I really like the way you take time to explain why you do things a certain way. It's obvious you spend a lot of time researching and learning as you go. I'd admit I sometimes think to my self 'I wonder why's he doing it that way' and at times it's just the case that there's more than one way to skin a cat and other times the reason you've done it that way is revealed later in the video where you've taken into account something I hadn't considered or overlooked. I guess that's where your experience and knowledge comes in.
I cant fault the way you work, 1, because I couldn't bloody do it and 2, because your work ethic and ideas are completely epic. I LOVE WHAT YOU DO AND HOW YOU LIVE. Thanks for another awesome upload 🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒
Kris - a really short video explaining how you became so adept at so many crafts and skills would be really interesting. You are one of THE most capable of all the homesteaders I've watched. Bravo.
Haha, thats basically it. i do a lot of online research. I have some core skills from a passion for making things from a young age but i am not trained in any of the things i do today Just a black belt in google Fu. Although that can sometimes backfire, the other day i was looking for info on roundwood timber framing on youtube and all i could really find was myself, so it isnt always effective.
Ben law comes up a bit and i have all his book and i look up to him but the information in his video and books is lacking in detail. I am planning on making some really in depth how to vids when we build the roundwood frame for this building so i can change the lack of content online.
@@KrisHarbour One of the best ways to learn is to teach- so a great idea to build that resource as you go ( perhaps a income generator in time too ) also a legacy
My idea for a new project, maybe next year or the year after, is a miniature stonehenge! You can make it uniquely yours with trees, wooden poles and canvas, and of course stones or even earth bags set up to imitate the shapes. It would be super interesting to see what you guys could use it for, and I'm sure you'd have fun aligning it to the sun and stars ;) Keep up the great work!
hi kris, congratulations the workshop is coming up very nice and the structure for the door has come out very well too i am going to build a small iron warehouse in my house and watching your videos you gave me a lot of tips for building that I'll have to do. I finish saying goodbye to you a lot and I wish you good work for the continuation of your work. hi alex from milan italy
My guess would be because few people are willing or able to handle the physical labor involved. I would think that paying for that much labor would be pretty expensive for people who can't do it themselves. But it's a brilliant idea for those who can do it.
So, the labor-intensiveness of earth-bag building is the whole process, not just one part of the process (i.e. filling the bags). I have watched a number of other earth-bag buildings being built (on RUclips), and I think the whole idea and process is really amazing. And your building is absolutely beautiful with all the natural wood beams, and lovely unique windows.
Awesome progress! Glad you had help, hope the shoulder is healing up. I think you'd do quite well out of putting together a mini series of the things you seem to take for granted, for instance, milling your own timber, before the bandsaw. I know a few people that wouldlove to be taken through your thought process. Pegging, joinery... etc... just 60 second shorts on each topic you decide to put your spin on, with a link to the longer video where you use it. You deserve more traffic than you get and I think many more people could benefit from your no nonsense take on things and your results speak for themselves. Looking forward to the summer workshops you'll no doubt end up putting on once you are set for it. Also, the main house build! As always epic content, great work guys!
Is it even a Kris Harbour video if we're not all worrying about his safety at least once? :P Really awesome video dude! I thought it was cool to see what happens to the bags and how solid they become. You and Sam are working so hard, especially in that heat! Really enjoying seeing this building come together :)
Because of your humble attitude I think some folks think they should help you out by giving armchair building advice. I would never try to tell you how to do anything and I shake my head at those who do. They need to realize that you could spend a lot of money, resources and two weeks building a machine (and it would be a damned good one) and then when you were done with it you could park it with a “FOR SALE” sign on it for a couple of years before selling it for scrap. Or you could just fill the bags and be done with it.
Regarding the bag filling systems. There are a number of them out there that are demonstrated to work. I agree completely with your assessment that they won't work with Your soil. I also agree with your assessment that what you have for soil is very well suited for earthbag building. Where I am in SW Michigan, we're on sand to at least 60 feet in depth. Here we can absolutely use a mechanized process for filling and laying the continuous tube type "super adobe" "bag" system. But we also need to add a significant percentage of Portland cement in the process, because sand does not hold together on its own :) Compromises and adjustments to each unique site. Huge part of real natural building.
hoenstly, watching you mill your own lumber and everything, even if using a "store bought one" i tihnk its totally worth it for someone with property, expecially with the cost of lumber lately, i really wish to do what you are doing here one day and have my own homestead.
Perpendicular is at right angles to the other piece. Parallel is running in the same direction as the other piece. A way to make it easier for clean up when doing the chiseling for mortises is to lay a tarp under the area you are working on to catch the chips, which will also make it easy for storing in a bin for tinder later on.
I have built a strawbale house with earthen rende5 and earthen floors. We have really hard clay soil here and I will give you a hot tip, use a jumping jack to break the clumps..then throw the clay through a big sieve with front end loader. you can even bag the clay later use. Quite fast and makes it quite fast to make a consistent clay slip or stabilised earth.

Mad, mad skills. So much work goes into making it right. Glad you showed all the hard work and design that goes unfilmed, Very impressive!
You two make it look so easy. The door frame turned out great. And you managed to make the video more than just about filling earth bags. 🤠
Watching you fill, lift, and tamp those earthbags makes my bad shoulder ache. Love the videos! Please take care of yourself!
Yeah. I can barely handle scooping the litter box without my back hurting anymore. One of those bags would do me in. Lol.
