Maps are so important when traveling by land sea or air. It is easy to get disoreinted when you can't see to get your bearings. All navigation is basically the same wether your using a giro compass or lensatic compass. Learn to take good notes in the field. Learn to write important features that can be used to correspond to a map you buy or make yourself. It could save your life one day or someone elses life that is acompanying your. Being 15 miles or more from nowhere is no big deal if you know the area well. You get into an area you have never been in, you could walk for days if you don't use s compass well. Back in the mid 1960s just before i joined the military, i was on land that belonged to a. Large forestry company. Few houses back then. Maybe one every 10 miles on a main County road. I was 35 miles in the middle of nowhere. I knew the are fairly well, but it eas East Texas near Taledo Bend Reservoir. I got turn around. No compass. I knew due East was the Sabine River. So i walked due east keepinh the sun to my back. It was 11:30 am. The sun was 15 min from going beyond the tree line behind me when i reached the bank of the Sabine River. It was 17:34 PM. Walking in the East Texas thicket lost is not fun. Once there i moved north along the river and came to a spot i fished at in Newton County. I was 20 miles from home due west. There wss trail at my fishing spot that i followed to the main road FM-2626 walked south 3 miles to road heading West to Kirbyville and followed it in to Jasper County. Once there i cut NorthWest 15 degrees and ended up on our property at 00:30. I was beat. I was 15 yrsrs old at the time. I never forgot that experience. It changed my life. Once i joined the military and learn to read a map and use a compass. I made sure i could use both expertly. I was never going get lost again.
I had a 2 hour course in land navigation in the Army 30 plus years ago. I don't remember ever really understanding how to use the lensatic compass back then, and I have never had to be the one to navigate. Your videos have made this concept easier to understand... now to get a compass and go practice what you are teaching. Thanks!
Land nav is a game of accuracy & guessing that you get better at so you can eventually find your precise location. So many variables to consider: pace count in different terrain and gear, elevation as it relates to pace count from point A to B, understanding magnetic declination, knowing which way you naturally tend to always steer (left or right) so you can counter this when adjusting to your azimuth, how to keep track of your pace count (ranger beads or rocks or note it down, etc). Great video!!!! I just subscribed! 🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌳🌲🌲🌲🌲🌳🎄🌴🌴🌴🌲🌳🌲🌿☘️🌲🙋🏻♂️🎄🌲🌲🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌴🌴🌳🌳🌴🌴🌳🌲🌲🌳🌳🌲🌲🌲🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌲🌲
Always a pleasure watching these videos. My wife and I enjoy hitting our local state parks and trails. I try and do a little more off the trail when its just me. Stoker’s tips and instructions are always in the back of my mind. Thanks for the good pointers on enjoying time out in nature.
I just subscribed, and I respect what you do, there is a lot of information on here for the young turbos to utilize "attention to details " ...."🪨 of the Marne"...."bloody first"
Very informative video. I was uncertain how you determined to add or subtract the mag. declination from map to field. It would have been beneficial if you stated your location and if the magnetic declination was east or west of true north.
@@STOKERMATIC thank you for your reply. I can understand now that I know that your in the PNW. I'm east of the agonic line in Pennsylvania. I have watched many of your videos and have learned a lot.
I found your channel today. Thank you for taking the time to provide quality instruction on land navigation. I am writing a journal of notes that I will take with me. I am putting together a quality kit. Can you please recommend how to get quality maps of the southwest. Thank you again for your time!
Hello... really like your videos! In this case I would have "Aimed Off" ...left or right of that road bend so when you hit it U know which way to turn! Regards!

@@STOKERMATIC thank you so much Brother I appreciate it 😊 My Daughter and I choose the outdoors over going to a movie or something like that ❤️🇺🇸 I'm 45 and I have lived in Washington My whole life. Love your channel and content. I was never good in math so help me out here! In this vid you state your pace count is 65 paces per 100meters. You then estimated the distance to your destination as 610 meters, did some division, then stated you would need to walk 65 paces 9.5 times to arrive on target. It seems that if you repeat 65 paces 9.5 times you would walk almost a kilometer, Am I being obtuse?
love the videos, one thing that I thought that you might want to take with you is Surveying ribbon, as for the purple ribbon you pulled from the tree, shouldn't it be put back since it was put there by someone for a reason. Was just wondering.
Hi Stokermatic, I noticed a lot of regional park maps use topographic with grids maps but also “offset” North. I don’t think it is due to declination but bottom line it makes orienting the map with a compass a bit more complicated since the “north-south” grid lines are not actually running north. Any thoughts on using maps with adjusted North? For the most part I don’t really need to use compass since they are largely trails with easy to find terrain features or Markers, but good for practice.
Great questions and observations! Most of the time, the offset is negligible - many times less than 1 degree. So you could use the grid lines to orient as you're really just trying to ensure that what you see towards the top of the map is what's in front of you - similar to how a car's navigation system will continuously shift clockwise or counterclockwise (but sometimes lags...offset) If you wanted a perfect orientation, you'd need to use the magnetic north arrow, fysa Hope that helps Tomes! Can you show how to shoot a reverse azimuth on a lensatic compass? I know how but I’m sure there are people out there that don’t.
