    i remember seeing the first swift back in 1992 when i was taking hang gliding lessons and always dreamed of having one.
    i remember at the time how much progress was being made on the glide ratio of hang gliders, and the swift totally blew everything away at the time with a 50:1 glide ratio, where the top gliders were something like 14:1 iirc.
    by now the SWIFT is ancient, has there been anything like it that now blows it away and has made the original swift seem like a quaint old toy?

      This glider is the only new "threat" to the Swift and it has similar performance:
      www.ruppert-composite.ch/en/
      In the last few world championship events the Swift still finished first over the Archaeopteryx. There are some prototype gliders being built but non that I know of have flown and demonstrated performance exceeding the Swift.

    my dads been getting me to train in light aircraft but this looks much more like my kind of flying! no ATC much more freedom. Ive been wimping out because i always think flying these kinds of craft is high risk but with a built in parachute im very interested in these and i weigh 150lbs so im guessing i could go quite far!

    What is the glide ratio of swift

  • @smorrismlbco
    @smorrismlbco  15 лет назад

    Soaring requires either vertically moving air or wind gradients. In these videos there is either thermal lift caused by uneven heating of the earth and then rising bubbles of air, or ridge lift which is wind deflected upward by an obstruction.

    They sure look like fun. Only I would spend a lot of time on the training hill and take it step by step and get familiar with all the do's and do not's first. But all the same they are an impressive feat of engineering.

    I like the aircraft but i have concerns about the pilot position, suppose a a heavy landing impacting your spinal column with the injures it may cause.

    • @JohnFHendry
      @JohnFHendry 8 лет назад

      +elio jarma Agree, the wing is really nice but it needs a standard pilot pod and a small motor or tow setup to rely on wheels as foot landing and takeoff only works when everything is just right and I didn't catch what the weight was but it's more than a hang glider I'm sure and that can be hard on the back as too many people have found out the hard way without mentioning any names.
