It’s called a leveraged buyout and is common in business. Glazers are businessmen and man united has been a good return for them. People are passionate about their clubs which brings an expectation that owners should just dump countless of their own money into the clubs with no return. I can understand why people don’t like it but I can see the business sense in what they are doing. Glazers will sell Manchester United to some Arab or East Asian oligarchs for a billion or so and make a massive roi soon I’m thinking.
There is a double edged sword at Man United 1) Spending only happens when there is no champions league football. Once United make some progress and champions league revenue comes in the pause button is hit( like what happened to Jose). This means United go backwards again and cycle continues 2) When we do spend we get completely ripped off and pay ridiculous transfer fees and wages to average players.

I also laughed at this, but have to admit this is probably more of a recent phenomenon. After years of stumbling around the mid-top half of the table, I feel Liverpool want to prove that they can reestablish themselves as domestic and European contenders without being perceived as "villains" like many people do with the likes of City and Chelsea. Net spend is a valid point (amongst many) because it demonstrates that their wages and transfers are more self-supporting (an FSG tenet), but it often comes across as a "holier than thou" attitude.
Makes a joke taking a pop at Liverpool fans, yet uses it as one of the key points of his breakdown of man utd's finances... Saying that Liverpool fans bang on about it is neither here nor there (maybe they do that because people keep denying it as relevant??) It's a fact of football finances, as this video points out...
@@LKeet6 Exactly right. It only ever needs saying by Liverpool fans because we're a naturally aspirated club competing with the likes of City and Chelsea, whose fans disingenuously like to point out transfers such as VVD and Alison as us somehow splashing the cash without accepting they were paid for by the sale of our best player at the time, Coutinho. Tne problem is (and not just with this video but on the whole Glazer discussion in general) is they pick headline figures without context. Out of context it seems awful but in context less so. For example you will hear figures like £1.5bn thrown around but a massive chunk of that figure are 'paper expenses' rather than cash expenses. They cost absolutely nothing cash wise but are a deduction on the accounts, this then creates a tax shield that actually saves the club cash. And while they have started paying dividends now the interests rates are pretty low for a long time even those were saving actual cash. Interest is a deductible outgoing so for every £1 paid in interests it was saving between 20-28p in tax. As the PLC they were paying dividends, dividends are taken after tax and even if the PLC hadn't grown revenues at the rate of the Glazers so dividend growth had remained as it was dividend payments would have been around the 50% mark of the the interest payments but without the non-cash deductions that only existed because of the takeover that offset it. If they had grown revenues anywhere near the Glazers the dividend payments would have grown at a bigger rate as well. Now obviously the Glazers are now taking dividends although relatively at a lower rate than the PLC was paying although in total more which changes things but we also have seen them finance the debt so much that the interest rates now are pretty low. Ultimately the difference between the cost of the Glazers and the cost of the PLC really isn't that much despite how its often sold to play on fans emotions for clicks. There is a debate to be had about the Glazer and if they are good owners but as long as the out of context figures are what drives the conversation you can't really have that debate as the emotions from those figures derails it.

I've always thought that the Glazer's takeover of Man United was one of the riskiest takeovers possible because as soon as Fergie would retire, did they have the football acumen to know who to replace him with and how would their transfer strategy pan out after that. We've all seen how abysmal they've been since and that they truly are using this as a cash cow vehicle. Up until recently, I would've said that they had no transfer plan and their manager selection has been iffy. Still, it looks as if they can get themselves a nice paycheque at the end of it all (I'm no fan of United but part of me wishes that I could attain that kind of money that the Glazers pay themselves out) and as long as they are profitable in merchandise and (when it's allowed) matchday revenue, they're pretty much here to stay.
Rooting for another club is deplorable. But I won't hold anything against fans who just don't want to stay at the cash cow farm. The stupid Geordies at Tyneside swear at Ashley all they want , but they still end up putting cash in his pocket. Banners and tirades on social media isn't going to get rid to the idiots responsible for these sub par signings, not paying for the stadium ticket, not buying the new gear, is the only way to get the Glazers to sell
I work in China and I’ve met plenty of ‘fans’ that are very open about switching to whatever club is winning the league at the time. A lot just don’t get the loyalty that comes with supporting a club-many support players instead. As a fan you’re there for the lows and that means you can truly enjoy the highs. These types of ‘fans’ will never understand how it feels to win a trophy or to beat your rivals or to get a shock win or lost. Being a fan is like marriage. It should be for life and only in extreme circumstances does it get broken like liquidation or just being so painful to support that it becomes unhealthy-looking at you Mike Ashley.

I remember that one time when Man Utd bought that one player - lets call him "Paul" to protect the innocent - for an insane amount of cash and paid him even more insane wages, and people were questioning it, I also remember when that money wasn't showing on the pitch when "Paul" played. I remember discussing that and Man Utd fans declaring it not mattering because Man Utd have a bottomless money pit - and them being told that's not how that works. Oof. Also, Inter, Question Mark. There's a banking crisis banks might start recalling that debt..
Has a united fan for over 20 years, it hurts me to I'm more attracted to liverpool and there way of playing only because it pains me more to see how my team is slowly being run into the ground
That is also why *Liverpool's deal with Nike* though less in terms of money up front (compared to NB) is worth way way more when you take into account Nike's marketing and commercial power. Hope this new collaboration will reform Liverpool's business model to be better.
I know very little of football. As a businessman though. United is a business, and no longer a purely recreational sports club. And as any business, it can fail if not showing a decent profit !.🤔🏴
The biggest question should be, how did the FA and Premier League allow a solvent club to be bought on a leveraged buyout and take on this huge debt? Then 15 years later not only has the debt not been paid off its actually increased! I thought they had rules for the suitability of potential club owners, clubs and their finances? They seem to give out points deductions to Sheff Weds, Bolton and others when things go wrong. The money Man Utd brings in should not be allowed to be siphoned off elsewhere, specially when the stadium needs redeveopment and their transfer debt is the highest in the world. The Utd haters may laugh but this could happen to any PL club. The people running football need to change the rules to prevent this from happening again.
I could go on about needing a DoF's and awful transfer policy (try to haggle but can't shift deadwood thanks to awful wage structure) but the fact ramins United need 3-4 years of mid-table finishes to severely hit their profits before the Glazers either put money in rather than take it out or finally sell the club and move on... until then, Glazers won;t care if we never win another trophy for 3 decades, so long as they get their dividends paid out.
i think the solution for both the owners and fans is just to minimize unnecessary spending like overpaying wages n overpaying transfer fees, and differentiate between the club's sponsorship and commercial deals with the team's affairs. that way, glazers may pump more money for them while leaving the team alone n do its job (winning titles), while the team hopefully can get back up n improve with the manager and director of football get the veto power.

So what's your problem?
Maybe make a video on how the Glazers managed to purchase the club. But yeah, I like these kind of videos where you go in-to depth on a particular subject :)
Fantastic video - would love the Glazer video too
Yes, need a video on glazers and their take over
I can deal with the slow transfers or even the poor performances on the pitch, but it's the amount of money that goes out of the club and the debt that really angers me.

That's mental.
Says it all really
Man U will never be the same with an ownership that thinks money will = to results, which is partially true but with signings that the manager wants.
Thanks for the video! It really gives a perspective. We would love to see a whole video dedicated to Glazers.
The last point about fans changing teams when they're team isnt winning is the one of the biggest issues with modern day football. No loyalty/passion.
Thank you for the video. Now its time to know about Arsenal's finances. I am sure many fans including arsenal fans want to know.
As an Arsenal fan, I sure would like to know what those incompetent Kroenke's are up to
They haven't invested a single penny in renewing the stadium.
Always respect your vids. Your research is always spot on and you can tell the vids have been made with a lot of hard work. Thanks 👍
Very sad. Thanks for this insight Alfie
They haven’t run out of money it’s just been going into the glazers pockets
Great video, Alfie! Definitely want to see the Glazers video
Excellent video.
Video idea: Italy's Seven Sisters and the golden era of Italian football
Just watched this for the first time and it just validates all of Utd’s fans concerns. Please do a video on the glazers!
That feeling when you realise you're still in more debt than Man United...
Great video.
As a UTD fan, this is sadly very true and truly very sad. Those parasites make me sick, and I also mean it in the derogatory sense.
Love videos like this
Hope you do another one on the glazers
All time Premier League 11 vs All time La Liga 11
And same could be done for other Leagues
SeriesA, League1 and Bundisliga
As a Series and ranking which league comes 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th in historic 11s
Jesus, the Glazers don’t have one chin between the three them
As an Evertonian, I am grateful that no matter what liverpool do, they will always be in the shadow of Man Utd. :)
Thanks the upload. I love your videos!
Brilliant video. Thanks. Exposé of the Glazers please.
Glazer takeover video would be great! Please please do one on Stan Kroenke and his ownership of Arsenal. Thanks!!!
Thanks for the amazing insight. Please do make a video about the Glazers takeover!
Love the videos alfie keep up the good work bro
A video on the Glazers please
Looking forward to the Glazer video!
I was expecting the wage budget to be the highest by some margin. Aside from Barcelona, I'm surprised as how close it was to other clubs.
“hahaha, I don’t know what I’m doing”
- The Glazers.

"Basically, Man Utd are still paying for players they've _already_ signed..."
Almost EVERY club structures its' transfer fees in such a way, and it is not only very common, I dare say it's the *prevalent* method of payments.
video about bayern munich's expert financial management and prudent transfer market plays, and wage policies
Pls do one of these for tottenham. IT would be really interesting to see how we are making so many transfers despite our stadium debt.
The most common trend in this video is,the finances are bad,but somehow manageable compared to other more successful clubs
Great content as usual 👏🏿
Could you do a video on the dismal financial situation at West Ham please?
Another great video and shows how as soon as United’s rev drops we will be in big trouble and our rev will drop if we don’t start doing well and we can’t do well with the glazers in charge, just a downward spiral really
It's sad as a Manchester United fan seeing the big fall of the red devils after Sir Alex retired and even more sad if you consider last season we were extremely lucky to finish third looking at our results
Sneaky streaky 👍🏼😅🤣
Im a liverpool fan and that net spend joke landed nicely :D
Yes video explaining the glazers take over
Has a united fan for over 20 years, it hurts me to I'm more attracted to liverpool and there way of playing only because it pains me more to see how my team is slowly being run into the ground
Same here but mine since 2006
15:15 - the Stretford End hasn't changed much.
Pls make a video about the Egyptian golden generation which won 3 afcon's in a row (2006-2010).
Can you do a video about Tottenham's finances
That is also why *Liverpool's deal with Nike* though less in terms of money up front (compared to NB) is worth way way more when you take into account Nike's marketing and commercial power. Hope this new collaboration will reform Liverpool's business model to be better.
I know very little of football.
As a businessman though.
United is a business, and no longer a purely recreational sports club.
And as any business, it can fail if not showing a decent profit !.🤔🏴
Pls do the glazer video too
It sounded like a dig at LFC fans for understanding how balancing sheets work and more importantly nuance.
Loving the Glazers business model.
Please make a video about the united ownership group
anyone who sees this, have an amazing day, and I hope that you are well
wish you the best too, mate!
My favourite time of day- context o'clock
Brother make a video on Barça's financial situation and debt..
Can you do a video on why you think Roberto Carlos is overrated he was good defensively.
i think the solution for both the owners and fans is just to minimize unnecessary spending like overpaying wages n overpaying transfer fees, and differentiate between the club's sponsorship and commercial deals with the team's affairs. that way, glazers may pump more money for them while leaving the team alone n do its job (winning titles), while the team hopefully can get back up n improve with the manager and director of football get the veto power.
Hey Alfie, where do you find some of your financial information. I would like to dive deeper into some other teams.
Another class video
Day 23: 2012-2013 and 2019-2020 Bayern Munich Combined XI
It's a sad state of affairs that within sport a club is allowed to be run like this. Essentially piggy backing off of their past glory.
I’m a massive Liverpool fan but that net spend dig was hilarious 😆
Would enjoy the glazer video
When will the glazer video be I can’t wait
