It isn't necessarily "the key", although that can be a good place to look for a no crank, no start issue with an e46 whose battery is strong. See this excellent post if you're having this issue also: forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1011677#/topics/1011677?page=4 . It really helped me diagnose my issue.
I have X3 e83 it has M54 engine. I'm confused as I'm having no crank no start issue as well. My diamond key can lock, unlock, roll down windows without any issue - I even have re-programmed the same key but not able to start my car. Anyone out there with any new information? Much appreciated.

i took the whole front end apart and got too the starter 20 hours later lol and then took 5 hours too get two bolts out but i found out that the bendix wheel was making that sound so i took it too a place too get tested and it came out that it was in working order but i did clean the shit out of all the connections on the starter and there was alot of mud, and corosion so im putting it back together praying it works if not im cutting a new key
I had a feeling on why my bmw wouldn’t start. So I I did what I thought would work and it did. So here u go. For me what worked was doing an oil change. The car is very fragile and I noticed it was low on oil. So that’s how I fixed the no crank no start. I had to jump start my car every time before this. Hope this helps

Hey guys! 👋 I have a 320D saloon (2003 plate) with the exact same issue, this morning I couldn’t start the car at all with either keys. 🔑 I took the key apart, changed the battery and it fired up 🔥 straight away, BMW in Exeter told me this could be because the circuit on the key was not complete without any battery in (mine had come ever so slightly loose) which causes the immobiliser to fail. it now fires with either battery. The resolve for me was to order a new key (the key fob is £160 whilst you can get a standard key for £50.) ever since then the car has started everytime and runs like a dream! 🤘🏻 Hope this helped:)
Alejandro Gomez no, the key was not the problem. the battery was running at 12.8 (should start fine at 12.8) so i tried the key and it didn’t work, so i charged the battery for an hour and it started fine with both keys.
323SE..E46....2000 MODEL..came out to car, opened doors, put key fob in ignition turned key to start all dash lights on as per normal turned again to start position but nothing happened. tried again a few times and nothing. have a brand new battery on car anyway so new it wasnt that. tried my spare key with no battery in it and car started immediately. re tried with original key and nothing...left car warm up for ten minutes. tried original key again and car starts. today again tried original key and nothing.tried spare key and starts immediately. this time i tried original key straight after spare key and it started. stopped and retried original key 5 times then and started every time....im baffled but can live with this......any ideas anyone please.
hi alex...no still exactly the same...even with a new battery in original key....remote central locking not working now either.....a friend has suggested disconnecting and reconnecting battery...il try this over the next few days and update if it works....
That's low battery - either discharged or done for or bad cables (voltage drop). The rapid clicking is the solenoid closing (which draws low power) but then the high current starter draw then starts (that's the function of the solenoid - it closes the high amperage contact for the starter motor) the battery voltage drops because it has low capacity, the solenoid de-latches and the cycle repeats. Hence the rapid clicking.
“immobiliser” just take out EWS and you need to buy new key or chip then just give it to mechanic he will program your new key to your EWS block, and it will work, it will cost you ~ 35€

See this excellent post if you're having this issue also: forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1011677#/topics/1011677?page=4 . It really helped me diagnose my issue.
THIS, follow this boys
bro, the new key a clone of the original? or did they reprogram one from the computer?
I have X3 e83 it has M54 engine. I have a wallet key that is made of plastic if it's the key causing issue then why I did not have any problem starting my vehicle with the plastic key provided by BMW. I'm confused as I'm having no crank no start issue as well. My diamond key can lock, unlock, roll down windows without any issue - I even have re-programmed the same key but not able to start my car. Anyone out there with any new information? Much appreciated.
mine starts the car but its delayed sometime few sec, sometimes wont start at all, same as yours all lights on no clicking
Disconnect the ibs wire from the negative battery cable. The best solution and it's free!
Which one is thw ibs wire?
Hey my car won't start it won't crank but it's the same problem as you but the thing is is that we have different keys. My car it's a 2008 series 3 328i do I have to go take it in or just get a new key
Alice Iupati I will take it to your import mechanic yes if you tried the steps I showed you in the video I would
Alice Iupati did you ever figure out the problem? Having the same issues at the moment
Okay I have a 2003 bmw 525i just had this problem just now car was running fine till today everything is new didn't check my starter yet and I tried my other key and nothing
We're having the same problem did u find out what the problem was
This happened today when I went to go pick up my car from the shop. I will let you know if that is the solution.
Did it work for you
What was the solution?
Having a problem with mine same exact thing but I don’t have a spare key
how much would it cost to buy a new key?
I just save myself 150 bucks😂
Can they check your key if it works?
thank youu!!!!
I tried my spare key, no luck, guess it is the starter... It is kind of strange how it failed all of a sudden... No signs of failure I was just waiting in a parking lot for 15 mins after I drove my car and it wouldn't start...

i have a 97 bmw 328 i and i have 2 keys i start the vehicle and some times it cranks and does not start then i try again and it does not crank for about 3-4 times and has a weird sound then i try it again and it starts right up has anyone had this problem before? i was thinking about getting a new key cut but thought id ask first
leigh white when you say this weird sound do you hear like your lights come on and I like your front lights adjust or you hear like crackling
i took the whole front end apart and got too the starter 20 hours later lol and then took 5 hours too get two bolts out but i found out that the bendix wheel was making that sound so i took it too a place too get tested and it came out that it was in working order but i did clean the shit out of all the connections on the starter and there was alot of mud, and corosion so im putting it back together praying it works if not im cutting a new key
leigh white I've been there done that it's no fun taking the whole front and off just to get to one little part lol.
2005 e46 does this intermittently but does start. Any advise?
Wolfofworld San this is probably your key too i had the same intermitent problem new key everything worked fine
If you have tried everything everyone is saying in here and still no hopes. TRY DME EWS Alignment your Welcome :)
How did the key cost
I am having a similar issue I am going to a dealership today for a new key I hope that is the problem
So the problem was from the key??
I had a feeling on why my bmw wouldn’t start. So I I did what I thought would work and it did. So here u go. For me what worked was doing an oil change. The car is very fragile and I noticed it was low on oil. So that’s how I fixed the no crank no start. I had to jump start my car every time before this. Hope this helps
Thanks
That probably explains why my keyless entry half ass works.
I just bought a new key from dealer and it won't work. It acts like the first key u had. And I lost my other what should I do ?
Icecream Beats you need a new “imv” box and it will work lik a charm
@@CrisReaction is that in the ignition?
Filiberto Fonseca it’s under the hood but if that don’t work you probably need to reprogram yo whole car but when you put the new ivm box in you gotta reprogram yo car anyway
@@CrisReaction okay thank you. Ill leave that for later. I am working on bypassing the emv or imv its alcalled. Its the antitheft system behind the glove box. Cut two wires and bypass
How much is the starting price for a new key ?
300$ and up .
I just bought a diamond key with remote from dealership for $195. 2005 X3
Mine was 400.00
From the bmw shop. Keys must be from there to program them to the car.
Don't buy someones key fob won't work in your car
Julie Korhorn ??? lmao u got ripped off
Hey guys! 👋
I have a 320D saloon (2003 plate) with the exact same issue, this morning I couldn’t start the car at all with either keys. 🔑
I took the key apart, changed the battery and it fired up 🔥 straight away, BMW in Exeter told me this could be because the circuit on the key was not complete without any battery in (mine had come ever so slightly loose) which causes the immobiliser to fail.
it now fires with either battery. The resolve for me was to order a new key (the key fob is £160 whilst you can get a standard key for £50.) ever since then the car has started everytime and runs like a dream! 🤘🏻
Hope this helped:)
Rev. Liam Clarke tell me,did you heard strange crackling when you turn your key on second?and temperature show to max?
Mines a 2007 750i and it does the same thing.
Hey abe
did you ever figure out what the problem was
yes I did it was the key
Okay thank you I replaced my key and that didn't work

Do I have to go to the dealer to get it programed or can they do it with my vin.
Dealer
Locksmith wont have the code to program. BMW is the only one with the code. Its good cus no one can make a key besides bmw
And how do you program
I've got a key fob..sometimes i get crank but no start and other times it starts normally lol
same problem bmw 2003 316ti starts most of the time and then suddenly wont start wait few hours then start again. did you find the problem?
@@ksstndr same issue. Did you figure it out
dif you program your key to your car
Thank you man
same shit happened to me, bought a key today. i’ll lyk if it works
Hhff Fffhh did it work ?
Alejandro Gomez no, the key was not the problem. the battery was running at 12.8 (should start fine at 12.8) so i tried the key and it didn’t work, so i charged the battery for an hour and it started fine with both keys.
Hhff Fffhh ugh I just bought a brand new battery
What if my battery is running at 12.2 ?
im having the same problem i got the chip replaced and noting happens
Check antitheft and collision system disconnect them if its been in a collision or minor bumper damage. Also check ingition.
How much was the key
Like 250
It’s not the key all the time you all might need a new imv box
Imv box , Is that in the ignition?
I have same problem
Al Rogers did you find the prpblem?
hi alex...no still exactly the same...even with a new battery in original key....remote central locking not working now either.....a friend has suggested disconnecting and reconnecting battery...il try this over the next few days and update if it works....
Al Rogers did it work ?
The battery has nothing to do. That's just for the locking system
Buying a new key this week
Change battery on key fob
“immobiliser” just take out EWS and you need to buy new key or chip then just give it to mechanic he will program your new key to your EWS block, and it will work, it will cost you ~ 35€
