- A while back I made a video where I showed how to make a Wonder Woman shield using an exercise ball and a hot car to create the dome shape on an EVA floor mat. This time I am going to show you how to make a Captain America shield and try to make it using a heat gun instead of the hot car.

I've watched ten different tutorials for a Captain America shield and this one was the most beginner-friendly, looked the best, was the cheapest, and was the easiest to follow.

This is really cool, I want a heat gun more than ever.
I had a really old one before this, and I really didn't use it much, but the ability to control the temp is a huge game changer. I have used this heat gun in way more ways than I thought I would.
Tip for anyone who doesn't have an exercise ball to use, I used the front cover of a fan, they come in different sizes but I found a big one that had the perfect curve, used the same method of holding it down with plastic wrap and tape and it turned out just fine
I think that you’re idea about making the shield and getting it shaped just right is the best method I’ve seen

Yay! Thank all that is good and kind in this world... another awesome Lost Wax video from the incredibly talented Chris (and family). The heat gun works a treat, I loved how it opened up the cuts and sealed the foam... made for a lovely finish on the shield. A bit off topic but would you ever do a steampunk bicycle (maybe for one of your children)... I’d love to Steampunk one of my bikes but not sure how to go about it (and still have one I could ride)? Thanks again Chris... and you still have the most relaxing voice is ever heard... it’s like massaging my ears with a mink mitt!

Wow, I learned a lot from this video. And I love that heat gun! I had no idea that scoring and heating opened up the foam. I'm shocked that the plastic wrap didn't melt. And the claymation at the end was AWESOME!!!
Glad it was helpful for you! Just remember when heating foam to have good ventilation and lung protection:) The plastic only melted a little bit one time when I wasn't moving the heat gun fast enough. Thanks for watching!

I found a way to make a bigger captain America shield fro. The floor matts
Stick multiple together at the sides then hide the seams and cut it to the size of (depending on your height) 60cm or 65cm (23inch or 26 inch)

I noticed in your intro that your shield looked like it had multiple circles on the back side? Is that a different design before you fine-tuned it for this tutorial? Oooor am not seeing clearly or missing something in my build!? Are there pics of the back anywhere? I didn't see them on your site.

Thanks!! If you are referring to the part where the shield flies around, the key to getting it smooth is to use a slow shutter speed, so that everything gets a bit of motion blur. Then when it's sped up it looks like a natural amount of motion blur for the speed. I hope that makes sense. Also I had the shield rigged up on a contraption connected to a power drill with a long pole with my camera connected to it..... Hehe, I think you're the first person to notice the reference:) If I remember correctly, I used metallic blue, but just regular red (If I had metallic red the right shade I would have used it as well)

Oh, sorry I just saw this, I'm not sure the size of the ball, but I'd say it was about the width of a standard door frame.....ish....

Building this now and coming out great so far. Out of curiosity, what color blue did you use? I captured the red and silver from the video. Is is Decoart Cobalt? Thank you!
The blue I used was a metallic paint. I'm not 100% sure which one it was but judging from the opened paints in my paint drawer, I think it was Plaid folk art metallic "Blue Sapphire"

If my base layer of silver paint is not smooth can I sand it?
I have one question. When you are heating the foam after attaching it to the yoga ball, the heat doesn't melt the plastic wrap or cause the tape to come off?
As long as you keep the heat moving and don't get it too hot, it's fine. If you're melting the plastic, that's a good indication you are getting things a bit too hot.

I think it was around 70 cm did. But that's just from my memory of it being close to the width of a door frame. Hope that helps:)

Can you use a hairdryer instead of a heat gun
I have used a hair dryer for forming foam, it doesn't get as hot, but if you're patient, you can usually get the job done.
Hi. Love your content. I was wondering, did you have any thoughts after you made the inside portion of the shield, regarding how to make that a little less bulky and perhaps blend into the outer more effectively, at the circumference at all?

Hehe, awesome, yo totally got me!! I guess I was just too lazy to convert them from the readout on the heat gun. That's the thing living in Canada, there's both Metric and Imperial influences so everything gets a bit mixed up:)

where did you get the eva foam floor mat? and what size is it?
I got it used from a thrift store, but you can get them at lots of big box stores. It was 24 inches square if I remember correctly.
How much for the shield? Do you sell them?

Ur so silly! The lampshade video is my favorite, and I actually made the lamp shade and it turned out great. And I use that method for a lot of things
Hehe, I love the lampshade video too! I actually used that technique to cover my kitchen floor when we lived in Australia. That's what gave me the idea for the lamp :)

@@LostWax I've seen that technique used on floors but I'm wondering if it would really hold up. Do you think it would work in a basement on a concrete slab? I'm doubtful just because of the hydrostatic pressure. I know you can coat it with a clear epoxy type of chemical but underneath is where the problem would be.
@@upla his steampunk lampshade tutorial. I also made a miniature top hat with his tutorial for a small skull statue that I have. It turned out wicked cool. This guy introduced me to rub and buff. I don't know how I ever lived without that stuff. I used to create my own out of metallic eyeshadow and glue but the real deal works so much better and on every surface -even shoes
@@77cuzigetatemore I can't really say how well it would hold up. We lived in an old dairy barn with a concrete floor, but probably only lived there a year or two after doing the floor. From what I can remember though, there was a bit of discolouration in a couple spots after a while- and that was coming up from underneath.

It all depends on what you are making. Lots of my patterns have multiple sizes so they generally fit most people. What were you planning to make?

Your Steampunk arm tutorial really helped me make an armoured arm for LARP, so I was thinking that maybe a steampunk breastplate tutorial could help people (me) make all kinds of wonderful costumes!

Hmmm, it's something I have thought of, I guess it's a bit more challenging than most, as there are so many different sizes and shapes of bodies. I have mostly stuck to headwear for that reason. But you are right, it would be an excellent addition to my line. I will see what I can do:)

What size exercise ball did you use?
You know, I am not sure. It was pretty big though. I know it fit through a standard doorway, but wouldn't fit through the front door of our car. If that helps at all...I wouldn't want to have a much smaller ball, as I think the edges of the foam would start to get wavy.
@@LostWax Biggest size I'm seeing available is 85 cm. I'll go for that, then.
Is that contact cement toxic?
The water based contact cement is much less toxic than standard contact cement, but still worth being aware of.
