What strikes me about this interview is how clearly he answered the questions. No verbal stumbles or long pauses. No "uhs" or "you know's". I always was impressed with his musical abilities and artistic vision, but the long hair and rock and roll attitude made me assume he wasn't nearly as intelligent as he obviously was. This interview really shows how sharp he was and makes me respect Too Loud in another way now. Thanks for posting it!
Man, I just LOVED this guy's playing! Very lyrical and I love how he used a lot of chromaticism in his solos.......very unique and recognizable in a sea of sameness! RIP Brian! :)
I watched Brian play for the Headpins in Vancouver at Rohans Rockpile on 4th Avenue. If I remember right it was 1978. When I saw Brian play that day I was in absolute awe! I had seen the best-of-the-best play live in Vancouver at the Coliseum and I saw/heard Brian do things on an electric guitar I had never seen done before!
He wrote the song MY GIRL about me. Felt bad for decades for leaving BC without saying goodbye. He was sure upset with me when he did run into me in 83 backstage at a Toronto and Tom Cochrain concert. I was 3 months pregnant with Downchild Blues Band keyboard player's child. He told me about the song. I took him home and he signed my album cover and we both cried while he made me listen to the depth of the song. I do miss you Brian, I'm so sorry!
mygirlvicki I had never heard of Brian MacLeod, Chilliwack or Headpins until tonight, August 11, 2018, thanks to me awaking in the night and going on RUclips. Their music was not played in the US, to my knowledge. I did see a commenter say "My Girl" was one of the first videos on MTV but I did not have cable tv. Brian was very talented and a great guitarist. It must feel good to have a song written about you. Greetings from MA, USA. 😊
Never knew the backstory to my girl wow that's so sad knowing how it all played out but you can't turn on the radio anywhere without hearing it even to this day. His brilliance lives on.
Saw him live with Darby at the Surfside in Victoria somewhere around '84...he was on fire that night...one of the best rock guitar performances I've ever witnessed. I got a lot of inspiration from that. RIP Brian...:)
Brian was a fantastic talent, he could play everything! He had unlimited energy and I am proud to have known him as a friend for a few years. Indeed he was a fantastic person, a Prince among men and musicians. RIP Brian :o)
Been realy digging back into all my old Chilliwack and Headpins stuff the past year or so, and have alot of fond memories, especially with Too Loud's contributions. I got to meet him once (I think it was either Coal Harbour or Horseshoe Bay where he was moored, most likely C.H.) when I was around 11 or 12, and he was real warm, and just very nice to me with no "star attitude". Just a relatable easy going guy. At the time admittedly I had no idea just how big he was, or what sort of an influence he would later be on my playing. I still remember the day I heard from my dad's girlfriend that he had passed. She was pretty broken up about it, frankly angry because cancer had taken so many family, friends and acquaintances over the years, and many like Brian, far too young. I felt terrible, and horribly down simply because beyond meeting him that one time, so many of the Chilliwack members past, (going back to the Collectors period with Claire Lawrence) right on up through Brian's time with them... that whole family were closely linked with mine, and aside from chance encounters here and there, and they were always the topic of discussion, and in our thoughts. It really was hard for me to hear the news. I always hoped someday we'd actually get to sit down and jam together, give me some pointers. Hell...Maybe just go fishing! He's missed greatly. Hard to believe, but if he we're still with us, he'd be in his 70's now! He'd still be rockin' though. Bill is, and he's done alot to keep his legacy alive, and shown him great respect.
I got to watch Brain Macleod 3 nights in a row, back around 1990, at the Windsor hotel in Red Deer Alberta...I was 15 and underage...Brain was a monster guitarist with increadile tone and tasty licks..I was devasted when I heard he died a few years later!!!
