  • NOTE: This one surge lasted less than five minutes, but video was sped up 10x normal speed. ALSO: Later in the video, watch the boats in the harbor change direction as the surge comes and goes. This was all recorded near Port San Luis on the morning of March 11, 2011. You can read more about this video online at www.yourcalifor...

@YourCalifornia I have a similar video of the west coast surge caused by the Japanese earthquake that I sped up so you can see the effect... it is amazing how dense people are and just think it is a "normal tide sped up." Thanks for posting, great video (for those of us who know what we're watching).

@michaelford3 Hi Michael - this was one of many surges lasting about 5 minutes (tidal shifts take about six hours). It was shot from 10:00 a.m. to 10:05. Hope that explains why it's significant.

@yomomsroom The tsunami originated off the coast of northern Japan and the effects were felt (as shown) along the coast of California. That is more than 5000 miles.

Tsunamis are so difficult for most to understand. Even on NBC's national news tonight the "science correspondent" said "the tsunami speeds up when it hits the continental shelf". ... ugh. ... anyway ... thanks for contributing to knowledge and understanding.

@alexparody Watch a few more videos...the impact of tsunamis isn't consistent along coastlines. It impacted other parts of the state more significantly.

@JesperCairo Thank you! Your comment is much appreciated! The video is actually support for a written news piece we did explaining the event in further detail. When combined, I think the video makes much more sense to those watching it.

so the tsunami was 50 times smaller than the normal waves we get in Australia right......

  • @YourCalifornia

@Onelove8226 We tried to be very cautious and accurate with our headline - simply saying that we were showing the related surge to hit California. No, it's not hugely dramatic if you're looking for video similar to the horrific destruction in Japan - but it was a very significant event for coastal California nonetheless.

@kaytaya1 you shouldnt jump to conclusions so fast , Ive lived in ca before ' riverside/oc line ' , i was only stating that i saw no tsunami.

    Tsunami »
California harbor 'destroyed' by tsunami, but damage less severe elsewhere
March-11-2011-The tsunami created by Japan's 8.9 earthquake has now hit the West Coast.
Early reports suggest that two California towns - Crescent City and Santa Cruz - have been hit hardest.
Video: Watch the Japan Tsunami surge hit the California Coast at Avila Beach
Crescent City harbor destroyed; 4 people swept into sea, 1 feared dead
Crescent City's harbor destroyed by tsunami

  • @YourCalifornia
    @YourCalifornia  13 лет назад

@dad5101520 Not in this harbor - but up the coast in Santa Cruz and much farther up in Crescent City, there were dozens of damaged boats. I simply showed the boats to indicate how you could watch the harbor for signs of whether the surge was coming in or receding - based on which way the boats were all pointing.

@akelodmc This is along the Central Coast. Yes, it looks like high tide - but keep in mind a tidal cycle only happens twice a day. This happened in less than 5 minutes!... and happened several times over the course of the hour or so we were there. We just captured one for the purpose of this time-lapse video.

Thank you for sharing this. The reality that people do not realize is it may not look like much but the currents are very strong which is what makes the tsunami dangerous. These very conditions could kill a unaware person and have in the past. That is why we have early warning systems in place for them.

Thank you @miriamgillartist - not sure why the comments are running so negative. We just are trying to show what it looked like as the surge came onshore. No special effects (other than time lapse).

  • @YourCalifornia

@AHMetal86 Great point! It's clear there are just a half dozen waves or so - really no reason for me to even explain that the time-lapse was only five minutes. Appreciate the comment!

Dear "YourCalifornia". Thanks for sharing this. I am sorry to see the ill-behaved comments such as "This video was a waste of time". I guess some RUclips users think it is only a place for chaos and fun, with no room for fact-filled representations. I appreciate you having taken the time to compile the time-lapse. Cheers.

@KaiThePhaux cool, thanks for the info. learn something new every day... perhaps "devastating tsunami this is not" would have been better wording anyway... still glad it was at safe levels here on the central coast. my heart goes out to the folks in Japan.

Guys this tsunami wasnt suppose to be like water in the city or stuff..
Just a series of waves that lasted a long time.
And its called a 1-3 foot tsunami.. Stupid people i swear xDD

I thought this was one of the better videos of the cali wave action. Most just show aftermath stuff, which is boring. This was fun, and I appreciated that it was sped up. Nice work! :)

It's may well be a small ripple of the tsunami but it also coincides with the high tide, i doubt it would look much different any other day when the tied comes in!
