- Total Knee Replacement
On December 12, 2023, I had total knee replacement and came through it with no problems. The day after surgery an occupational therapist and my nurse were in my room working with me. Out of nowhere, they both began questioning me. "What's your name?" "Do you know your name?" "What's your birthday?" "Can you tell us your birthday?"
After a few minutes of questions without answers, my nurse called for stroke protocol. Sharon had gone to get prescriptions for me because I was supposed to be released that day. As she entered the hospital, she heard the call for stoke protocol, but she thought nothing of it. When she got to the door of my room, she saw around 15 people in my room. She went in and stood out of the way.
I was sent for a CT scan. When I returned from the scan, Sharon and I were in the room alone together. She explained that my face was drooped. She told me the doctors thought that I may have had a stroke. She told me she had texted our Sunday School class, posted on my Facebook page, and she texted her friends from the Metroplex asking them to pray for me.
I can tell you that the power of prayer is real. I still communicate, I was frightened, yet I was at peace. I knew that if God brought me to a stroke, I knew one way or another, he would bring me through a stroke.
The next day my face wasn't drooped. I could communicate. That day the hospital released me. They didn't know what caused that episode, but their best guess was lots of meds before and after surgery, exhaustion, and stress.
Once I got home, I read the hundreds of comments that former students has written regarding their prayers for me, their well wishes, and the difference I made in their lives. I was sincerely humbled by that.
Just over two weeks later, I was posting something on Facebook. I knew it wasn't right, so I asked Sharon to read it. She read it and told me there were some words that didn't make sense, and then it was random letters. A couple of hours after night fell, we were on our way back to the hospital. Once again I couldn't communicate. I don't remember much about that episode, but I do remember looking at Sharon trying to get her to explain what was happening to me.
This time was scarier. I have only a few memories of the second time. Sharon later told me that an occupational therapist asked me, "Where's the window?" No answer. Then she asked, "Where's the door?" "Do you know where the door is?" I don't know whether I couldn't communicate or whether I didn't know where the window and door were.
They ran a bunch of tests. Nothing showed symptoms of a stroke. They told me I may have had a TIA, Trans Ischemic Attack. A TIA may be a warning of a future stroke. No one made a definite diagnosis of a stroke or a TIA. I am confident that my complete recovery is the answer to the prayers of many.
Praying for a complete recovery, and of course, God's will.
I still struggle to find some words, but it's nothing like it was when I was in the hospital.

I am too. I still struggle to find words sometimes, but I don't know how much of that is age, and how much is a slight continuation of hospital stuff.
