He reminds me of the old days when AL played concerts with Jean Luc Ponty, and vice versa.

Ah ! Ces compositions me rappellent des souvenirs qui me donnent des frissons ! C'était la grande époque du jazz-rock et cela n'a pas pris une ride.

He wrote this piece as framework for he and Santana to collaborate--at Santana's request. Santana spent a day trying to learn the scales and gave up. Al released as a solo piece. But they are still good friends.

I've not once listened to Al and thought "Santana influence".

      .*AL DiMeola*
"Then I wrote a song, which was the probably the most commercial song that was not a hit that should have been a hit. It's called "Midnight Tango" that I wrote for Santana. I flew out to his house to teach him the song but he got really frustrated with himself that he couldn't play it.
Santana couldn't play the licks you'd written for "Midnight Tango"?
He bowed out after two days. Then when the record came out, he called me. I was still living with my parents and he calls me up and he goes, "Man, you know, I just heard the record and it's the most incredible thing I've ever heard. Look, hey man, I beg you, let me play on your next record, man. Please. Give me another chance."
      What did you think?
I said, "OK, I'll see." The reality was on "Casino" there wasn't anything simple like "Midnight Tango" so there was no way. How could he play "Egyptian Danza"?

Al's guitar sounds so polite and tame compared to JImmy Page's on the original.
