My great great uncle operated 9000 herself and he said that he never had issue with her.

Howdy! I’m a volunteer at the RailGiants Train Museum in Pomona, CA where 9000 herself is preserved! I’m amazed with the detail and effort DSGDDR put into this model. I can personally say that this is by far the most accurate digital model of 9000 I have ever seen! Regarding the sound, I agree with the general consensus that the chuff loops is a bit iffy, but nothing to complain about considering it’s a free model! Regarding what you said at 14:24, there are actually live recordings of UP 9000 herself traveling from Cheyenne, Wyoming down to Pomona, California under her own power to be preserved at our museum! In the recording, you can hear the iconic even-6-chuffs-per-revolution in relatively high quality. The museum sells a CD that not only has these recordings, but also recordings of our other 3-cylinder locomotive, Southern Pacific 4-10-2 #5021, which also traveled to the museum under its own power and also had its sounds recorded. Regardless, I’m so happy with this model I have been waiting patiently for years for, and am overjoyed that it has finally been released!

Before there were Challengers there was the 9000 series. Back in the day UP was still trying to figure out how to design a loco to tame the Wasatch grade. They tried the TTT (2-10-2) but thought it was too slow. They tried a mallet 2-8-8-0 articulated loco, and while it did well hauling heavy trains the large front cylinders on the mallet produced too much hammer blow at high speed, so again it was too slow. The 9000 was a return to the rigid frame design, the twelve drivers meant to spread the weight needed for the extra tractive effort from the extra cylinder under the loco and keep it from slipping. This gave UP the power and speed it was looking for (at the time) but on the Wasatch grade which at the time had tighter curves and more narrow clearances the loco's performance was hampered. With the development of simple articulation (using fresh steam in all cylinders rather than using exhaust steam in the from cylinders like a true mallet) UP developed the first Challengers, the CSA-1 and CSA-2 classes, with the same twelve drivers just hinged in the middle and an extra set of trailing wheels to support the larger firebox. With the CSAs in charge of the Wasatch the 9000s were moved mainly to the plains where they could be used to their fullest potential on the longer, gentler curves. On some occasions you would still see a 9000 run over Sherman Hill either as a helper or road engine or run to Denver, and after the Big Boys were approved and the subsequent realignment of the Wasatch grade to allow longer curves and broader clearances to accommodate the new engines it was probably not unheard of for a 9000 to somehow work itself over to the Wasatch as its tonnage ratings were similar to a Challenger, but regardless they did spend the better part of their career working on the plains. In the 50s it was a rare and lucky catch to see a 9000 working as a helper over Sherman Hill. While the Gresley valve gear did eventually present problems the railroad began installing roller bearings onto the joints of the valve gear thus helping to eliminate some of the headaches of keeping them from running hot.
There is one recording of a 9000 that I know of, but it's of the loco starting a train and from the sounds of it the loco is probably due for an overhaul as the valve timing is very off (it sounds like a staggering drunk starting the train), thus unsuitable for using as source material.

If you want to hear a more accurate exhaust sound effect. I’d recommend hearing footage from the Trainz 2006 version of this class. Which by the way has a model of the double Walschaerts conversion, and it is a trip to watch it work.

Im glad Darlan (DSGDDR) managed to find this, for some context, he has been makin the model for almost 10 years, but he had a problem that forced him to delete almost all the progress on the 900p, until he started again with it last year after releasing his PRR S1 Model, and here it is! He must have had a tough time with this engine

The nines as the crews called em were obviosuly very good on the plains but when they hit the mountains their speed and power were impaired. I have the 9000s in several of my dvd's that I got. Quite interesting that the 4-12-2 led to the 4-6-6-4 type and for a fun side note if u split the power of the 12 drive wheels in half u get a 4-6-6-2 type.

I'm always a little saddened when people review a 3 or 4 cylinder engine and don't show how it looks between the frames. But the engine is still amazing and DSGDDR did an incredible job ^w^

Yes finally this is my all time favorite locomotive because if it was for the 9000 the up challenger and big boys would never exist. All but one have been scraped and the last one is a static display at Union Pacific. The middle cylinder was a huge pain in the ass to fix and replace as well which is why the men hated working on her. The prototype challenger was a rebuilt 9000 as well. There's even a country song about her. It's called 9000 was her name. Dark DJ Productions would you consider bringing the 9000 the you dark railway series even if its for a little while.

At least we have 1 that survives today that shows a good example on how powerful they were, At least It didn’t suffer the same fate like what happened to the New York Central Hudson’s.
