I don’t envy Villeneuve’s tough choices in adapting the source material, especially what to cut or change. He’s obviously a great fan of the written works. I’ve been happy with his adaptation and think he’ll do Dune messiah and the Guild justice. I think it’s important to remember that the movies can only be adaptations of the source material; it would also be a disservice to Dune if they were essentially just audiobooks with cool visuals. I’d love to see more about the Guild, CHOAM, Landsraad houses, Kaitain, Heighliners and Tleilaxu. But in the end, Dune isn’t about them. It’s about the Atreides and their golden path.

The Jihad could not happen without the consent of the Guild. The Fremen warriors couldn't get off Dune without a Guild heighliner. And of course, the only reason the Guild would go along with something as horrible as the jihad is because they knew Paul could cut off spice supply. I'm interested, but a bit worried, about how he introduces the Guild and Bene Tleilax. Or as you said, if he introduces them at all. Another great video.

I agree with their importance to the story, but Denis treated them as interstellar Uber in the first movie and minimized their importance in the second. The great houses showing up in orbit shortly after the battle minimized the vastness of interstellar travel and the importance of the Guild in his version. It's the same problem the Acolyte has, instant interstellar travel doesn't work for story telling.

Another excellent analysis of this extremely challenging material. I am a huge admirer of Villeneuve as a director and believe he is one of the best visual storytellers working today. But I fear he is overmatched in taking on the task of adapting this story into a screenplay. When I first heard that Denis was adapting the Dune saga I was elated. Based on his deft work on Arrival at portraying psychic as well as temporal phenomena in such an elegant way I was sure he was the best director for the job. But I failed to factor that the screenplay was written by Eric Heisserer. On first viewing I was extremely shocked and disappointed in Dune Part II due to the radical omissions and only after seeing the film again did I come to appreciate the feat of pure filmmaking that had been achieved. If Villeneuve can take a page from George Lucas on Empire Strikes Back and let a more seasoned writer grapple with the complexities you've outlined then the final film may not collapse under the weight of spectacle and blunt moralization.

It's a delicate balancing act as non-Dune audiences are already processing Feyd and an unborn talking Alia. It woild be good to establish them early on in Dune Messiah film that the spice must flow for navigatiors

What i like in Villeneuve's adaptation of Dune is that it offers elements of surprises to people who already read the books since some things diverge.
If the events in the Books and in the movies were exactly the same, what's in it for me as someone who already know how it's going to play out?
I don't think Villeneuve has to make up for everything that was left out of part I and II. I feel that, in a way, fans of the books have to forget about the books when watching the movies.
Villeneuve's Dune is not Herbert's Dune, i think he made it pretty clear with the changes he made to Chani's beliefs, other characters like Alia or story bits like Thufir Hawat's disappearance.
Since Villeneuve only intends to adapts some events occuring throughout Dune Messiah, the question then, in my opinion, is : What elements (of the books base lore) should be included or ommitted for this third movie to work in the confines of a trilogy?
I think the Spacing Guild and other parties will make it to Villeneuve's Dune Messiah but i don't expect the movie to dwell deep in other factions à la Game of Thrones. There's probably no time for that in a movie, especially a movie that is supposed to conclude Villeneuve's depiction of Paul's story on screen and where other already known characters have to be developped like Alia, Irulan or reintroduced.
Villeneuve does not seems to be interested in lore for the sake of it and i find that to be a good thing.
We learn things about factions through characters related to them and their actions like the Bene Gesserit through Jessica, Irulan, Lady Margot, etc, the Fremen who believe in the prophecy through Stilgar or Shadout Mapes etc,.
We don't learn much about Mentats because neither Thufir nor Piter attend a Mentat gathering of some sort and because everybody knows what Mentat are. Talking about the ins and outs of Mentats could be an unnecessary lore dump to the viewers. Books have pages to developp that and let the readers process and digest informations.
I feel Villeneuve's Dunes create an interesting dynamic between the books and the movies. It's almost like his movies are a parallel universe of Herbert's Dune where people who read the books (are rewarded for their knowledge) could still pull strings out of them to make theories.
For exemple, we could say that Chani wearing blue in part II is due to the fact that she is grieving Liet Kynes' death. In the books Kynes is her father so we could theorise that this character (a female in the movies) is her mother even though it's never stated that they are related.
For all we know, Thufir Hawat might be dead or might still be alive. Imagine if he were to reappear in Dune Messiah, used by conspirators to weakened Paul like he was used by the Harkonnen in the first Book.
I Hope Dune Messiah will subvert my expectations as someone who is about to read Chapterhouse Dune for the first time.

    F. Herbert wrote the fascinating science fiction “Dune” with ingenious settings like some tech limitations.
On the other, his intelligence might have told us that such limitations would block civilizational development.
For example, the planets liberated from the Guild Navigators had to be reigned by a similar God Emperor.

I wonder if he didn't include the actual navigators yet because he was still thinking about how they will be presented on screen and how the whole pandemic affected the production. I'm also interested if he will bring up the Bene Tleilax and the true nature of the Axlotl tanks which could be a touchy subject in the current climate, in how they created the first Duncan Idaho ghola (and if we get Jason Momoa back). I guess it depends on if he brings up Chani's death and parts of the Children of Dune story with a portent of God Emperor (my favorite story in the Dune series). This could pave the way for a future God Emperor mini series since movies alone could not do that book justice.
I have to admit I'm a little perturbed by the lack of detail is certain things like the devastating consequences of using lasguns in areas where people could be using shields (a huge part of the lore!) and how the open mouth of the sandworms wasn't portrayed as giving off immense amounts of heat in the movies, even though it was brought up countless times in the books. So it will be interesting to see his twist on the other key elements of the story.
Thanks for the news and insights!

First nice video Nerd Cookies. I think it is interesting to compare the way. Herbert writes about the spacing guild, Great houses, and the emperor as being like the American system of government with an executive branch, judicial branch and legislative branch. With that said I hope Villeneuve doesn’t portray that reality as a mirror to what is happening
today. I don’t want that I just find it an interesting power dynamic and parallel. I think it more apt to compare Dune 3 to The Rise of Skywalker particularly because of the way Villeneuve has adapted the source material. He has made his version of Dune in the rapidity of the events of Paul’s rise, the nature Chani’s character, and omission of important factions from the book Dune. How Villeneuve goes about weaving a story based on Messiah leaves me hoping for three things. I hope Villeneuve takes us five years into the future and Paul’s sister Alia is played by a child actress and in Paul’s mind by Taylor-Joy as well. Two I hope Villeneuve drops the petulant version of Chani in favor of a wise warrior who comes to love and defend Paul and Villeneuve reconciles the Chani of the books with the Chani he has created. Third and finally for now I hope the movie hypes action with the ghola of Duncan Idaho and Jason Momoa gets heavily featured as I still strongly feel that WB missed a great opportunity for getting audiences excited for a Dune 3 by not having a end credit scene of a ghola of Duncan Idaho being made at the end of Dune part 2.
But beyond all of this I really want Disney / Lucasfilm to hire me so I can help Lucasfilm make a response to the December 2026 release of Dune Messiah that will make Villeneuve and WB regret not adhering more closely to Herbert’s books.

I have few complaints about Villeneuve's adaptation. The lack of screen time for the Spacing Guild is definitely one of them. They could've at least have been incorporated into the dialogue scenes with the emperor.

At this point i doubt we will see the Guild or Choam. We will probably see the Tleilaxu because they're too interesting to not include.
Im telling yall, the moment he said he would never release extended versions of these movies, he started displaying that ego that disgraced GoT showrunners, Dan and Dave had in abundance. Then seeing how he changed Chani so drastically, with his bs reasoning, i lost any hope of this turning out good.

  • @andrewfowler1940
    @andrewfowler1940 2 месяца назад

I don't think they will jump right into messiah. Based on the Margo Fenring story line conceiving Feyds child, and based on Brian Herbert's acknowledgement at the end of the movie, I think they will combine some of Brian's/ Kevin J Anderson's book Paul of Dune with Messiah. This would give them time to fix the Chani story and introduce Alia as a child.

Villeneuve’s Dune films share several qualities with Jackson’s LOTR. Elements of the books HAD to be left out in order to have a watchable story on film. I agree, omitting the Guild is a big deal though. It needs to be rectified in order for Dune part 3 to make sense.

I self-identify as a "Dunatic" (Frank Herbert books only) but I just don't understand the book purist objections to the inevitable consequences of adapting a dense book series for the big screen.
I have never doubted Villeneuve’s commitment to the core Dune story, namely a "modern Atreides", multi-generational Greek tragedy focussing on Paul and his immediate family members. (I'm constantly surprised by Villeneuve’s going into later books to add lines and concepts into Parts 1 and 2 in a way that actually "works" in telling those early parts of the extended story: it's almost like he had an advantage over Frank Herbert in knowing where the story would go after the first book...)
Once you get to "Messiah" and "Children", you can't really tell the story wthout focussing on various plots aiming to undermine the ascendancy of the main characters (and, indeed to destroy them). With the Bene Gesserit now realizing their plans have gone awry, they WILL need help if they want to regain a measure of control.
I have no doubt that Villeneuve understands the crucial role of the Guild (I want so see Edrick too!) and of the Tleilaxu in this regard (and the particular importance of the latter in the extended Frank Herbert story beyond "God Emperor").
Though the changes made (and yet to be made) from the books will undoubtedly continue to irritate the purists, I don't doubt we'll get a masterful treatment of the tragedy of Paul Atreides in his "Messiah" film and (hopefully) of his ultimate family tragedy in a further "Children" film.
(If anyone goes on to adapt "God Emperor" and beyond, it won't be Villeneuve and may not, and perhaps should not, be for the big screen...)

I think that Villeneuve should make the third one guild focused, and show the conspiracy in a fuller light with attention given to all the major conspirators.

    • @PeloquinDavid
      @PeloquinDavid 2 месяца назад

But the conspiracy in "Messiah" (the book) ISN'T focussed on the Guild: Erick is just there as an anti-prescience "cloak" whom his fellow conspirators actually look down upon.
The focus of action in "Messiah" shifts from the Bene Gesserit characters held over from the first book (the Reverend Mother and Irulan) to the Tleilaxu but also focusses on the at least as important but independent conspiracies among the Fremen themselves.
I have no doubt we'll see Edrick (perhaps as a semi-tragic figure to be pitied) in the next film, but once it's clear Paul is blind to the conspiracy he shields, the focus of action will be on others in the various conspiracies...

His two Dune movies were nothing more than Lawrence of Arabia in space.
He thinks his cringe dialogue is deeper than that of Frank Herbert and he thinks his ideas of what characters are like is more important than the original story.
I'm a huge Dune fan but I don't care at all about his Dune Messiah movie.

Though we all hope an adaptation can be as true as possible, even perfect aligned with the original story, it never is. Even the porsonal imaginations of fervent reader of the books are all different , and so will be the adaptation by Villeneuve. Holding steadvast to the original will probably only disappoint the viewer, being open for slightly different interpretations and even changes just ads to the richness of Dune as a whole. The real fan does care, but understands knowing for instance the background of the guild and its birth, All others are just amazed by this intricate complex universe and hope it will be told in an understandable way. I think 🙂

As was said, there are no aliens; only Humanity, and the aliens they become in the absence of outside forces compelling them to remain "human", so I'm hoping for something cool, regarding this iteration of a Guild Steersman. I'm personally hoping for something that hearkens more to Edric, ad he's portrayed in the SFC mini series, compared to the bulbous monster of deLaurentus fame, or the stretched, blue thing from Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials, but their total absence, even as an organization, seemed odd.
So, at tbe risk of being dumb, why was Edric important to the treason plan? He was supposed to block Paul's prescience, but then Paul knew practically every step, plot, and perpetrator, anyway; it was almost as if he got to read the book, and change the plot, he was so in the know. What good did Edric REALLY do, before getting killed?
Unrelated, but I also wonder why the Guild ever let, or allowed the continuance, of others controlling Arrakis? They had the monopoly. They had all the ships, and the Navigators to steer them the the seas of probability, where even Mentats probably couldn't crunch those numbers, so why didn't they cordon off the planet, erase its location from memory, employ their own laborers, and control the source of the Spice themselves? Considering the pull they seem to have, it seems weird that, over 10,000 years, they never made a move to dominate access to it. Hell, even the Padashah Emperor...needs the Guild's ships to move the mined Spice from Arrakis to the banking system, or whatever Houses have access to said quantities, so if they control the ships, even from that early point, why do they permit the Emperor, the Harkonnen, or whomever else, to be involved?

Denis Villeneuve makes pretty movies that are good but always seems to be missing something. I liked Part 1 but was disappointed by Part 2. Part 2 was a well made movie. I understand what he was attempting with the plot changes. He was trying to reframe Paul as Herbert stated after the reaction the book and Paul as a hero. But I think it would have been better to not change Chani and show the aftermath of the Jihad. I think building Paul as a hero and then showing the aftermath is a better story. Narrative wise this works better for me. Part 2 would have been more of a victory, with Part 3 showing the downfall. I like the idea of showing how power is a corrupting force even for those with noble intentions. I feel like Part 2 made it seem like Paul embraced the fanaticism rather than being overcome by it.
