Raw Sienna Deep is probably my most useful yellow mixer to me as a landscape painter who likes neutral granulating colors. Its not pretty but wonderful for Sand, and mixing pale greens.

Such great points, I will for sure try it for green mixes!

Da Vinci is what I chose as my "upgrade" from student grade. While i will eventually try the other artist grade paints Da Vinci is the perfect price point for beautiful paints. I am absolutely in love with their colors and how they rewet, i never noticed my Grumbacher "academy" paint was hard to rewet till i tried easy ones lol. I replaced some of my most used collors and added 2 new ones but cant wait till i replace the rest of my core palette and add new colors! This palette also made me realize why red is an important color, ive only had a single red (the one that is always brand named) and rarely had use for it (for 10yrs mind you) but i added the Red Rose Deep and WOW i need reds now lol.

I always had a yellow issue too. I found out that I really liked Azo yellow or DaVinci yellow and nickel azo yellow which is a golden yellow and when mixed with quinacridone burnt orange makes quinacridone gold and when mixed with phalogreen makes super greens. The later makes awesome sunsets too. Those are my favorites too because they are lightfast.

Hullo Julia, I am just so happy that another person has experienced this wonderful palette! I have become just a bit obsessed with DaVinvi paints! I have wanted to order the 37ml tubes but I have been satisfied with the 15ml sizes. I did purchase the fill and re-fill set from DaVinci and I was NOT disappointed! I think of the Arylide yellow as a good primary yellow not a lemon yellow which I find very pale from most every company. I am glad you created a painting to do a real world example and not just a swatching session! I am saddened that you have an aversion to yellow. I believe that having a good range of yellows give me a huge range to change every other color on any palette! DaVinci is a professional grade paint company, not just watercolor paints! I hope they one day have a European distribution partner, I have replaced most colors on my palettes with DaVinci paints! I like them much more than Dan Smith too!

I believe that your blooms or cauliflower puffs come from poor sizing and typical wood pulp paper troubles. I have tried several different brands of wood papers but nothing else is like cotton paper. Even the Bamboo or Agave papers are not great watercolor papers but good multi media papers. You might want to add certain colors that you love to use and I believe some colors are used for mixing more than right from the pan (your dislike of raw sienna deep for one will let you mix from that pan saving your other sienna!) lovely video, thanks for sharing this palette!

Hi Julia! Sorry I'm just now seeing this, but I wanted to thank you for such a comprehensive look at my palette. I really appreciate how much time you spent with it, and I'm so glad you enjoyed most of the colors included! Any chance that raw sienna deep grew on you? It is an "ugly" color on its own, but I find it invaluable in animal paintings. It took a while for me to accept cool earth tones in my heart (along with raw umber), but I eventually came around to seeing their usefulness, haha. (And yeah, I'd have included perylene violet as well if it was in Da Vinci's line up :D)

    •  2 года назад +3

Well... Still not a fan of the "ugly" raw sienna on it's own but I do like it for mixing. I just really like trying out colors I wouldn't pick myself. It's such a great palette and colors picks!

I don't know why people don't like Phthalo Green. On its own I can kinda understand, but it's one of my favorite mixers! Can't imagine not having it. Same with PV23, though I have Daniel Smiths version.

My watercolor teachers never suggested I use phalos of any kind, one of my art professors who did oils mainly actually hated phalos lol. I tried it out due to Denise's palette suggestion (I like similar subjects) and I really love how the phalos green mixes! If I ever do "island" paintings it will be majorly used for those beautiful teals. I am still exploring it's uses but definitely enjoying it

“If you don’t like dark green…..get other dreams.” That’s hilarious. There is a decent percentage of my palette made up of DaVinci. For me, DaVinci watercolors seem easy to work with, and they have a good pigment load. And they are really affordable over here in the US. (Old Holland over here is $$$$$ crazy expensive!). Especially if you get the 37mL tubes with the colors you use more frequently. My only complaint with their 37mL tubes has nothing to do with the paint - it’s that the tube opening is SO large, it’s really challenging to fill a pan without making a huge mess…especially because the consistency of a lot of the paint (except manganese violet, which is a runny, sticky mess) seems a lot thicker than Daniel Smith. Also…Your dog painting is so cute!

    •  3 года назад

That is a really good point about the size of the tubes. I thought I would get the bigger tubes just for the value if I'm ordering from the US but now I might just get the 15ml. This is hypothetical I really don't *NEED* more paint, just want them 😂

I have this palette too, and agree about the alizarin crimson + red rose deep; not different enough to warrant having both of them. And I honestly have never encountered a raw sienna I liked :P The one that I did, I looked at the pigment number and the pigment number said it was actually yellow ochre, lol. I don't miss the black in this one though. And I like that there's a more true primary yellow instead of a lemon yellow - I'm not a fan of lemon yellow at all. Perylene violet would be nice, but I don't think Da Vinci carries it. Having perylene maroon is nice though. When I run out of a colour I plan to squeeze in Nickel Azo Yellow for sure. This is overall the closest I've found to a palette of 24 colours that I would put together for myself, but Denise has been the biggest influence on my colour preferences, so I suppose that's not surprising :P

Your English is a lot better than my Swedish! Great review - I also love Denise and just received my first DaVinci order this week. I put together my own palette of 12 from tubes, but will definitely order more. I bought Gold Ochre too, as well as Nickel Titinate Yellow and also the Naples Yellow and they are both great, really soft yellows. I love them! I know they both wouldn't make the earth friendly cut, but they are wonderful hues. Also I love Nickel Azo Yellow so much -- if you haven't tried it, you should (any brand).

This is so funny because I personally do not like the raw sienna but I love the raw sienna deep, it's so pretty to work with especially with different warm tone browns like trans red oxide and it mixes really pretty olive greens w/ pthalo green, But the regular raw sienna just looks so flat and uninteresting.

Now i have to bring it out and test out your mixes, thank you so much for the insperation!!!

Thank you so much for this awesome review - I did not know of Denise Soden, so I will definitely check her channel out 👍🏻 I have not yet tried watercolour, but I really want to in near future. Since I got diagnosed with the chronic illness M.E. a few years ago I found adult colouring and started my artsy adventure with colouring books, markers, pencils and so forth, but I have not yet dared to take on watercolour - it intimidates me, so I am building up my courage to just start to play around with the Arteza pan set and a little watercolour sketch book I got for Christmas (I know…It’s August…but dealing with the brain fogs because of the heat, and extra pain due to weather changes and thunderstorms it has been quite the spring and summer for me 🥳). So I try to learn a bit of tricks from RUclips while I “wait” and gather inspiration from your beautiful artwork - your painting of Albert is quite stunning - when I become a bit more confident and experienced with watercolour I will visit your Etsy store and treat myself to some of your gorgeous colours - thank you for always brightening my day 👋🏻🤗👋🏻

I’m so glad you like the video and the paintings in the video ☺️ I have fibromyalgia and it’s a daily struggle and if I could give you one piece of advice it would be to have fun and take your time. There is no need to hurry or stress. When I want to paint but don’t “feel” like it I try to just sit down and do some swatches or overlapping shapes. Just the act of moving the brush around is so nice. 💜💜

@ Thank you so much, and I will take your advice and go slow and try to be a bit more kind to my self - it is just feels a bit like I’m letting my self down when I really want to do all this fun stuff but my body and brain just make it totally impossible, and then it is like waiting for a good day that doesn’t come - hopefully fall will be better for me 🤞🏻

@@tine_dipped_in_colour ah, how about that. Did they ever find out what it is or what causes it? Nevermind. I guess they would have in order to make categories of it. I knew someone diagnosed with cfs decades ago. Seems like doctors either believed it existed or didn't. Well I'm glad they've made some strives in that area. At least hopefully to treat it. The last I knew was basically told to take a hot bath and deal with it.

What yellows do you like? I have yet to buy individual colors yet, I've always bought sets and palettes, so the idea is a bit intimidating for me :O)

    •  3 года назад +1

I have two yellows that I truly love. Mayan yellow by Daniel Smith, this is my go-to pure yellow. The other is more on the richer warmer side and that is Indian Gold by White Night. But check out the white night series they have both tubes and fullpans, amazing paint and very good prices! ☀️💛

😱 Himla Brexit!
