My favorite metaphor in the video is that music (the piano) is the magic that has brought her to all these magical places including some that turned dark. And in the dark time, even though she wasn't playing the piano in that section (maybe symbolizing her hidden year or covid where she couldnt perform), she still clung to the music and it’s what saved her.
@@christianseibold3369 I think maybe it's a little bit of all of those things or at least hard to point to one interpretation that seems more true over the others. It's also part of the teenage love triangle obviously, so she is just so clever to be able to write fiction based on deeply personal things that are relatable to anyone and yet also sometimes reveal her feelings about multiple topics or relationships at once. Mastermind is clearly about Joe but also a metaphor for why she seeked fame and is good at it. Would've could've should've is to me clearly about the Scott/masters experience but as others have pointed out is probably also about her own experiences as a teenager or a fictitious teenage girl after being hurt by an older man
The cabin is just a set. The painting she painted. The photo is of her grandfather. She wore one of her own nightgowns and did her own hair and makeup.
On her concert, Taylor said something like: In my mind, I'm not a millennial with cats but a victorian woman living in a cabin in the woods. I'm guessing that's what gives the cabin a witchy feeling
I don’t know if anyone has ever suggested this, but Cardigan is a part of the trio of songs on Folklore that tells the story of a love triangle. Cardigan is from Betty’s point of you, the song betty is from James’ point of you. And the song August is from Augustina or Augusta’s point of view. I suggest that you to follow up with those two songs.
Photo of the older guy is her grandpa. She wrote the entire album during the early days of lockdown and she imagined herself in a cabin in the woods as an escape. The only song off Folklore about Joe is Invisible String. Willow is a continuation of this video.
I love your interpretation. I kind of see it as her music takes her places, sometimes wonderful and sometimes scary. I get chills every time I see the pan out of her clinging to her piano in the middle of a storm. Like when she's scared and struggling her music helps her get through it. I love this video so much.
This is a triology of a love triangle between James Betty and Augustine (the songs are betty cardigan august) they are all soooo good and clever i highly recommend you to check them out but you should really focus on the lyrics and in the production like in cardigan songs starts with the sound of someone walking on cabblestones and theres a line that says high heels on cabblestones and in betty theres a line i was walking home on broken cabblestones so the songs connect both lyrically and with production so you should with details to see all the vision and the magic ♥️
For me, my take on this MV is like in a relationship, the first scene was her safe space like when the time before she met the guy, it's like her comfort zone. The second scene where like an enchanted land when she experience the magic of relationship she had but then the third scene which is her experience where a relationship became dark, rough, and toxic like she's drowning. The last scene where she's back to the old cabin which is her safe zone, where she realized that after all of what happened, herself alone is her only comfort and safe zone.
Why are y’all so funny? Ferngully forest = yes, filmed on location in the ferngully forest. Glad you noticed. Like how do you guys get anything done? I’m impressed. I love both of you, keep it comin’!
I completely thought you meant, "Don't let Jack (Antanoff) go!" Had me fall out. Agree. Tay, stay with Jack and stay with Aaron. Don't let either get away.
The song is not really about her 6 year relationship its about a love triangle the person in this song is a girl named betty and its about her finding out his boyfriend cheated on her, the other two songs of the triangle are "betty" and "august" and all of the lyrics in those three songs are related in a way
uhhhh I’m not sure you listened to all the lyrics if you think James cheated? He hurt Betty but they weren’t even in a real relationship, though they both had feelings and had been together. Betty wasn’t James’ girlfriend that’s part of the confusion and pain of the trilogy. James was foolish. James thought Betty would not be in a relationship with him & went with another girl.
@@HannahG-nk2mfhe did cheat - “slept next to her (august) but i (james) dreamt of you (betty) “ - “chase two girls, lose the one” - taylor even confirmed it in long pond
@@tayIorversion neither of those lyrics denote cheating? James loved Betty and there’s certainly a form of betrayal described. But sleeping with the girl in August isn’t cheating if they’re not in a relationship. Now *maybe* they were actually together in Betty’s mind & were just having problems/miscommunication. It’s clear from James’ pov in Betty that he was not sure Betty was with him or would be with him again when he rode off to that summer love affair. James still only wanted Betty so he swallowed his pride and came back with a grand romantic gesture bcuz he wanted a chance and knew he was wrong to have left (even if he had been hurt & scared like 2nd verse/prechorus describe)
Like the other commenter stated, Taylor literally confirms it in Long Pond. Betty and James were in a relationship, James cheated on on her when they were off school in the summer. He regretted it and really wanted Betty back. @@HannahG-nk2mf
It's part of a fictional trilogy about young love/ a love triangle. Cardigan, August, and Betty. Each song is told from each person's perspective. Betty is from James’ perspective, Cardigan is from Betty’s, and August is from “the other girl” who is named August.
You should listen to and watch her music video for the song willow. The video has ties to cardigan and I think it's just so cool. Also you should do the cardigan, betty, august trilogy of her folklore album. It will explain the story of the cardigan. Love these videos!
A fantasy world where she thought it was beautiful and amazing (just as Wendy did), but finding out its kind of lonely and there are dangers in this world, its not as great as she imagined. A relationship- that she once thought was great and amazing, but at closer inspection is not as perfect or safe as she thought so she goes back to what she knows and what is comfortable to her(the cabin and her piano/music)
Cardigan is part of a trilogy of songs in the folklore album, alongside Betty and August. These songs are about a love triangle, (Betty, James and Augustine) and each of the songs is told by one of their perspectives and at different times in their life. "Cardigan" is Betty's perspective when she's already an adult. Augustine (the girl James cheated on Betty with) tells her story in "August" reminiscing on the summer she and James spent together while on high school. And then, Betty is from James' perspective right after the summer he cheated when he's trying to apologize to Betty and get back together with her. Taylor and Joe were still together when she recorded this album, and, if I'm not mistaken, he Co wrote August. Love your videos, guys. Much love from Brazil ♥️
"and that thought she's having in her safe zone is turning dark, at first that thought is beautiful and awestrucking and water-flowing-out of the piano and omg there's this other part I should explore and it turns out to be this dark part" this man did not just perfectly encapsulate that relationship (6-7 years with YB) and what we've "learned" so far of how it ended, from a single song.
To me the piano part in the ocean shows how the music saved her in many ways for her during her career and the ocean is symbolizing the dark and how hard her life has been and then the piano was there to save her but that’s how I see it
Not related to this song but I think you two would appreciate watching how she writes her songs. There is a video on RUclips: Taylor Swift being a song writing genius for 13 min. Also seeing the videos from Eras Tour when it’s raining and she still performs amazingly.
Don’t miss the dual meaning to “you put me on and said I was your favorite.” At the beginning of the song it has the happy meaning of being united with someone who loves you but when it turns dark in the second half, it can mean like the British term for playing a prank or pulling your leg. *british accent* “You’re puttin’ me on.” So then it means she feels like she was duped during a vulnerable time specifically. I know Taylor has confirmed the trilogy idea of the three songs Cardigan, Betty, and August, but I also think it’s really interesting to note that in light of what we know about her relationship with Joe, a lot of things in Cardigan do apply, like they got together when she was at her lowest, and choose two girls, lose the one (him not choosing her confirmed in You’re Losing Me), and Joe being a Peter Pan type who just wouldn’t grow up and commit. It feels like she is recounting all of the things she loved about the relationship that she knows will haunt her, too. And music got her through it all when she found that her wandering had taken her to drowning completely alone. She has made other references in songs to how her relationship with Joe isolated her from some friends and family. (Dear Reader - no one sees when you lose when you’re playing solitaire, all my friends got friends who care. Also in her Reputation album there are numerous us against the world, I don’t care what anyone thinks mentalities expressed.)

Someone once said Taylor clinging to a piano in the ocean during a storm is a metaphor for her using music to get her threw hard times in her life
During covid she imagined being in the forest and she wrote two albums: folklore and evermore
Yes! We want you both to cover the trilogy!! Cardigan, Betty, and August!!!
They should cover Exile
And Willow music video
7:41 I do get the literal meaning of hanging onto her piano because her music is her solace that comforts her no matter what turmoil she faces.
Audrey: “oh sparkles!”
Danny: “that piano won’t play anything.”
This is me and my husband summed up too 😂
When her thoughts turned dark and stormy, her music was her life raft.
The cabin is just a set. The painting she painted. The photo is of her grandfather. She wore one of her own nightgowns and did her own hair and makeup.
the music video of willow, from evermore, starts where cardigan ends

@@josefmn yesss, that really shows how amazing and talented she is
Its really meaningful to me that when she was in the choppy sea that it was the piano (the music) that saved her.

I am surprised no one had told the Mrs. that this was about the trilogy.
Mr. Diaz is brilliant. It’s so wonderful to listen to someone not only unpack meaning, but delve into complexity. Lovely.
And now you see the ‘Evermore Shack’ staging on the Eras Tour and can marry up the relevance of that Era
I chuckled when Danny followed his high-level interpretations and insights with...

Now react to Willow music video, which is the continuation of thus mv
So, this track, August, and Betty form a trilogy - the story is told from three different ponts of view.
This is why I like to watch reaction channels. I very rarely grasp the deeper meanings, etc. this was truly helpful!
