    You don't know me, but you and your content have been like a mentorship for me. Like a lot of people here, I want to thank you so much for you and your amazing content. I was really lonely as a kid, and about 10 years ago in elementary school I got into anime and drawing. Your wonderful videos brought me so much joy and helped tremendously in my learning to draw and create things. You gave me solace and comfort when I was by myself, and are the reason I improved so much and kept getting better. Never change, Mark. You have done more for me and others, than you will ever know.

    Hi! I just wanted to say this channel was a huge part of my childhood and development as an artist. Now I'm finishing up my bfa in illustration and was reminded of your videos after looking through my old artwork. Its so heartwarming to see you still posting and please don't ever stop. You are a great teacher and have inspired so many kids to be artists!

    I really enjoy the way your mind works. It’s definitely interesting to consider how essential the plot is too a piece. Based on your spectrum there, the types of stories for which the story is less important have other attributes they bring to the table. Horror brings scares, comedy brings laughs, slice of life often brings that safe, relaxing atmosphere.
    Obviously, a well thought out plot can enhance virtually all of these stories, but the deeper into genre you go, the more things to stand on. When I was getting my bachelors in film, I remember being guided to focus on more specific genre work. You got science fiction? You got horror? Great. In movies, you can also add specific effects or specially considered camera angles. If the spectacle is impressive enough, then it is often allowed to overshadow the plot. It’s a good way for beginners to explore and grow.

    • @Sputterbug
      @Sputterbug Год назад +1

      yeah I think most people prefer plots but I think for things like slice of life and comedy it isn't that important. if you've ever read azumanga daioh, it basically has no story but its a famous comedy manga and is really good imo.

    • @Sputterbug
      @Sputterbug Год назад

      ay me too! the drama is equal with the romance too, maybe like 10% of it. and then comedy comes and goes, but it's mostly a lighthearted action adventure but with a lot of messed up backstories. I like adding horror to everything so that will be fun

    Mr.Crilley you have been my favorite artist and RUclipsr since I was ten years old. Seeing that you have posted makes me so happy, especially videos like these and your QnA’s. I love listening to them while I also draw on my own. Your videos and advice were what accompanied me the many late nights while I was finishing art projects for school. I don’t think I would have been able to finish them without your videos also motivating me. I am most happy to hear that you are well and doing public speaking. Take care and best wishes to your family!

    Drama and slice of life are the same I would argue. 'Drama without plot'
    Plot is generally 'things happen' and drama is 'people happen to each other' its jounals vs diaries.

    Pretty sure the generic blueprint for a romantic comedy is protagonist (usually a woman that has struggled with love) must choose between Guy number 1... and Guy number 2.

    My answer is: Why not both?

    • @Sputterbug

  • @DarthBiomech
    @DarthBiomech Год назад

    Well, that's interesting. I would've arranged them differently, for me at least, the romance definitely feel like a less plot-reliant genre than, say, drama. I'd even say that romance possibly could get away with having no plot at all and be just about characters interacting, mixing it with slice of life story. "X likes Y, but..." is pretty much all you need for a romance plot.

    You forgot Boy meets Boy, they fall in love, they live happily ever after.
    And don't forget Girl meets Girl, they fall in love and they live happily ever after.
    Of course, you could avoid these problems by saying Person A meets Person B, they fall in love and live happily ever after.
    Just a thought.

I would like to ask, what is your process for planning your novels? What is the first step? When do you design characters and how? What is your in depth process of planning and designing a graphic novel?

    I am a BIG Miki Falls fan. It is my favorite series from childhood. I was looking for it forever and my bf has found and bought the whole series for me. This book is beautifully made and very well detailed. I love Miki and the distinguishment between Hiro in the various ways you draw his face. I love love love these books and I plan on planning the collection down to my kid when she is old enough to read.

    I find the way you organize these categories to be interesting. I do it very differently. I think of stories in terms of a focus; Is this story just for action, is it to explore a concept, is it about the physical, emotional or mental journey of a character or characters. Genre is something I think about first as a vague foundation rather than to determine how much focus the plot will have as I, personally, always write with the characters, world and plot as a fundamental focus. I'm glad you mentioned that genres can still have heavy focuses on story.

    I was a bit surprised about horror but thinking about it, it makes sense. every horror movie or game I've played always had great plots, but sometimes there are bad horror plots but the media was still good.
    like resident evil vs silent hill
    silent hill is very heavily scares and symbolism, whereas resident evil is campy and story driven
    as much as I like horror I find that I'm not good at coming up with a horror plot. it's a hard one to do, at least as far as books go
