I don't always consume yall's content, I'll be honest. But props to you both for not just landing this interview, but you both did a great job with the actual interview itself. My hats off to you. With peace and love.
Great interview again. Shawn Layden is very insightful interview as usual. I hope that you amass popularity to have your own panels at community expos like Pax. What would be wild is if PSX returns and you guys actually get a panel. On the budget discussion, it'll be interesting to see what Sony ends up doing. I could see them shift heavily back to cartoony games that are still graphically impressive. Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart i believe had $80m budget. Kena budget was even much smaller. And these games looks absolutely gorgeous. I'm sure they'll still have $100m - $200m games, but likely less. If they can grow the popularity of their other more inexpensive games, those could be huge boons. Even like Ghosts of Tsushima was $60m. I believe a helpful way to expanding awareness and popularity is the transmedia push with these adaptations. The art discussion is very interesting. I can relate from drawing pictures and writing. The situation with Naughty Dog I understand as creative conscious. And I guess an appropriate comparison is like Prince. Just sucks that game development is so long that it takes so much longer to discover that it isn't what they hope. As for your Live Service discussion with PS+, I don't think they necessarily need to abolish the online requirements for numerous games. But I think their D&D live services should have a similar exception as Final Fantasy 14 and simply not require Plus. Just for optics. As for layoff discussion, sobering discussion but I'm glad to have more clarity. Lastly on PC discussion, I wonder who was behind the original decision of PC releases back on Playstation 1 for Twisted Metal 1/2 as well as Jet Moto 🤔.
I miss him man! Always was the face to deliver some of the biggest reveals of last gen 😢 He definitely left at the right time! Still widely respected 🙏
Shout outs to y'all Bari and Persona! Finally got the time to listen to the whole interview. Very insightful and great interview. Love hearing Shawn Layden's perspective on the current era of gaming. Thank you for providing the content! Keep grinding fellas
This was fantastic. Great questions, great answers. It was pretty much aligned with what I already assumed and thought we’d hear from him. Of course exclusives matter, and of course consoles still matter. Especially for someone like myself who lives in one of the most rural part of the US, internet isn’t most reliable for constant gaming the way some would want it to be if it were to go to cloud lol. And yes, give us Bloodborne 2 or a remake!
As a pony it is probably weird asking but outside of exclusives what is PlayStation's pull? "If you establish a platform and people understand what you can bring" exclusivity isn't as important. What does PLayStation bring other than exclusives. Mind you I can build a PC for $800 that obliterates the PS5 at this point. I can play couch controller TV. I can boot to my library without having to touch a keyboard. I can use a PC only for gaming and put it in my entertainment center. So let me ask again, what does PlayStation bring?
Go on list the components of a BRAND NEW $800 PC that can beat the ps5 pound for pound Also PC never had any exclusives to begin with, what does PC bring ? A 4090 can’t even do 4K native 120fps on any latest AAA games and not to mention stutter struggle, drm killing performance, shader compilation issues etc I would be with your arguments if you just stick with PlayStation vs Xbox or Nintendo as they are CONSOLES, but bringing up PC is brainless. Go on answer my questions
What a load of horse menure😂 800$ for a PC that ObLiTiRaTeS the Ps5 prrrrrrt.... You must be one of them PC fanboys who built a PC with matchsticks and bubblegum back in the PS4 era and then said look cheaper than a PS4 🙄
And your other weird question about what the PS5 brings other than exclusives. Is like saying what does your washingmachine do other than wash clothes really well. It's a GAMING console the whole purpose is to play amazing exclusive games!!

Way to go JAY & Persona! Can always count on you both to deliver a great show and an even greater Interview, it was truly one for the history books, congrats! PS: Audio was a tad low, especially on Shawn's end, nevertheless still a great show guys!
People act like Mr Layden is still a PS guy. Mr Layden works for Tencent. The number one gaming company. My team. Riot Games. Biggest esport game around. League of Legends.
Shawn is very intelligent but also knows business and has a passion for gaming and games! Looking at the state of play 2024, PlayStation have promoted executives that don't understand gaming just numbers and data. Sony is in trouble and they need Shawn!
Fantastic podcast. This one of the top PlayStation podcast episode, imo, across all PlayStation podcasts from sacred Symbols to ps i love you xoxo. Thank you three very much.
Yes, but more importantly, and specifically, I'd say studios getting/making enough in returning revenue that covers the cost of development/marketing and hopefully enough over that to make them all have a little bit of cash and not just "living paycheck to paycheck". I don't think it's a bad thing to have a mixture of revenue coming from folks buy/renting/playing through a subscription service as long as the above info I mentioned happens. Me personally. With peace and love.
@dannydement that's not necessarily true, with each deal being unique and different. When Sony and Microsoft for example sign deals for games that are already been out for a bit, usually it's just added money for the devs/studio or whatbeer publisher involved. For Microsfot specifically for day 1 games, it really all depends on the game/studios. On the early days of GP, it was much more just simply a "here's a chunk of money based on how much we think the project is worth. It has evolved since then. For some games GP serves as a marketing stunt and seems to help in mist cases, not always. But looks to have helped a lot with more niche games and series trying to break in, with both SEGA franchises Persona and Yakuza being great examples of this
@@Mmachine88 That's a one-time payment, fam, and it typically cuts into sales they might see on that platform. No, buying is the most important thing you can do to support games.
Why does this video doesn’t have 1 million views? See that is what’s wrong with society today. They gate the truth! They hate substance! They love PlayStation hate famers youtubers
Should gamers dial back some of these expectations cause now we are nearing a dev cycle of 6 to 8 years just for a new IP 4 to 5 for a sequel and when the ps6 drops I wouldn’t be surprised that we end up with dev cycles of 8 to 10 years
Thanks Shawn for showing up! We as PlayStation fans needed a voice at this moment and you and shu were the only voices that matter still, fck jim ryan and hermen hulst they ruined PlayStation :( You are RIGHT, AAA games arent unsustainable, doing pc day and date is a BAND-AID, not SOLUTION. 5 years later as AAA costs keep rising even PC day 1 revenue wont keep up. How is Tatoki so DUMB to not see that. Meanwhile Nintendo doing low budget games with insane ROI. Man i need Shanw Layden BACK
Excellent interview right there! I can see Shawn wasn't expecting these type of heavy and loaded questions but these are basically the things the community has been wanting to ask him. You can clearly see Shawn is bound by so many NDA and try not to either speak on behalf of Sony or reveal too many inside-informations but does give genuine answers nonetheless. He's truly a remarkable guy, I don't ever remember an excutive who enjoy games and it's fandom like him over at Sony apart from Shuei.
Dude gets asked about removing PS+ online and sidetracks to talk about Singleplayer games... he knows more than Jimbo, but he's still just another executive that wants money(and he's responsable that PS has paid online so he doesnt want to go into the other direction). Paid online shouldnt be a thing, its a scam. Its used for profit and not to pay for the service like they claim too.
1. Sean is busy ruining the industry working for TenCent. Why you wasted time talking about what clothes you're wearing is a question that needs answering. 2. consoles sales are irrelevant. sony people don't buy games. listen to Hiroki Titoki, he said as much. Also said Sony studios don't know how to manage a budget or how to make money. 3. confusion over 1st, 2nd, and 3rd? seriously? 1st. Sony owns them. 2nd. Sony pays a non Sony owned studio to make something. 3rd party, a dev puts a game on Sony and Sony has nothing to do with it. examples: 1st Party, Naughty Dog. 2nd Party, Arrowhead and Helldivers. 3rd party, Xbox putting Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, Pentiment on Sony. 4. Playstation is broke. Sony is close to bankruptcy. Currently, playstation makes almost no profit, and is well behind Xbox and Nintendo. Sony as a company, the only thing that is keeping Sony afloat currently is their insurance business. What freaked out Jim Ryan, and why he tried so hard to sabotage Microsoft buying ABK, is because Sony people don't buy games except Call of Duty. 2023, two of the top 3 selling games on playstation were Call of Duty titles. While playstation gets 30% of the sale on playstation, the other 70% went back to ABK. Sony would use that 30% to buy exclusivity from 3rd party devs. Now, Microsoft and Xbox get that 70% from the sale of Call of Duty, so playstation users are making Xbox richer. How much richer you may be asking. Let me tell you, Microsoft has been making a profit of about 16 billion dollars a quarter for the last 3 years. Last quarter, the only thing that changed was they added ABK's revenue to the company. The quarterly profit jumped to over 21 billion dollars. Call of Duty and Candy Crush make an insane amount of cash. 5. Naughty Dog makes pretty games, but the gameplay is always so bad. Like Last of Us, horrible game. poor man's version of Resident Evil. the cinematics were pretty, but that's where it ended. Both games fell flat, especially 2. 6. What will happen in 1 to 2 decades? Unless they get lucky, Sony won't be around when we get to 2030. Microsoft just prints money. Currently have 164 billion dollars cash on hand. If they want to be in gaming, and the purchases of Bethesda and ABK says they do, they will keep rolling along. Microsoft has 20 or 21 businesses under their umbrella that make 1 billion dollars or more profit per year. Xbox is the #3 revenue maker at Microsoft. Nintendo makes tons of money in many different businesses. Their toy business, their insurance business, their sex hotel business. Nintendo will be around for as long as they want to be. 7. Sony only gamers don't buy games. Never have, never will. Xbox gamers always outpurchased Sony people 5 to 1 during OG Xbox and 360, and as the consoles have released, it has only become a wider margin. In fact, MLB the Show makes more money on Xbox than they do from playstation only people, and on Xbox, they don't even have to buy the game. You guys brought up FF rebirth, that hasn't sold well at all. Underperformed by 30% or more depending on the country. 1, again, Sony only people don't buy games, and 2, gamers are sick and tired of remakes and remasters. The under 25s want new games, not regurgitated titles from the past, and there are plenty of older gamers like myself that have no interest in old titles being brought back either. 8. Revenue doesn't mean profit. Sony has a lot of revenue, but their studios blow through massive amounts of money making their 3rd person over the shoulder games that they only release one a console. Gamepass made 3 billion dollars profit last year. Devs get paid for their game, and in a lot of instances, get a cut of the sales too. Xbox has always said there is no set model for games entering gamepass. Every game is it's own thing, and devs/publishers are free to negotiate deals that work for them. Also, Xbox gamers tend to buy an awful lot of games in Gamepass. 9. Sony gets 70% of their game sales on PC. Getting more money out of gamers is always the goal for publicly traded gaming companies. Nobody should care about games going elsewhere if you want your plastic box of choice to be successful. However, for Xbox gamers, they get all Xbox games day 1 in gamepass, so when games go to PC and playstation, it makes no difference because if you have Gamepass, you're still getting great value by not having to pay for your games. Sony on the other hand hasn't been willing to put games day and date in PS+, so sony only gamers kind of are getting screwed.
Terrible interview almost to the point of second hand embarrassment, needed more pushback in regards to live services, subscriptions ,online paywall etc . Fanboyism has gone too far, even shawn himself was laughing at you guys
It really pains me to know that it was SHAUN of all people that thought it was a good idea to put the first party titles on PC. If this was Jim Ryan's doing, it wouldn't have surprised me at all with all the BS he's pulled in just the last few months alone, but SHAUN?! That's the LAST freaking person I would've expected to drop that bloody bomb! I get wanting to get more recognition from these IPs and whatnot, but if that's all that's necessary, then rely on let's players on RUclips and Twitch instead! You didn't have it come at the expense of making the idea of owning a playstation console POINTLESS in the long haul by making them legit exclusives no more! Yeah Xbox had been doing this for years, but they at least had an excuse for doing so as both that and Windows are Microsoft made platforms! Having titles that were meant to be made for PlayStation consoles and ONLY those platforms on a competing platform... It just something that just shouldn't mix! They just don't BELONG THERE!
If these guys (no offense) got Shawn, it shouldn't take long before he hops on Sacred Symbols right? great stuff congrats on the interview! edit: just watched the whole thing, just as he gave the blueprint of what was going to happen 4 years ago, he just did it again, especially the part of studios getting people together to make the thing and then dispersing to other stuff, this guy is definitely still at the top of his game, I don't like that he went to tencent but danm, come back Shawn!
No hard questions and incredibly ignorant people here asking the boring questions. You guys need to study more and bring people like Layden VERY crucial questions, but you didn't. That is probably why this old dog chose you guys, he knows you will be "soft". This is no journalism, this is a waste of time.
There's a limit to what they can ask him, Shawn Layden likely can't answer the 'hard questions' that you want him to answer because of a little something called NDA, Non-Disclosure Agreement, meaning he can't just 'answer the hard questions' willy-nilly, resulting in potentially divulging crucial information that could land Shawn Layden in serious legal hot water with Sony. JAY BARI & GamingWithPersona would have already known what they can and can't ask him beforehand, no point asking 'the hard questions' ESPECIALLY if Shawn Layden is under NDA not to say anything.
his answer to subscriptions was weird.. it isnt that black and white.. if someone who hasn't played let's say COD in 10 years but plays it on a sub and likes a skin and buys it for $20, that is money to the dev. If someone plays it on a sub that wouldn't have otherwise and buys it before it leaves the service, that's money to the dev. there are these other effects than what these 3 made it out to be. There are also payout incentives for time played and hours spent.. Also doesn't Shawn work for Tencent? Tencent is a company that has consolidated immensely but these guys didn't bring that up? and he kinda went in on that but his own company does it..
I stand by with sea of thieves making its way to ps I believe Helldivers 2 should goto Xbox heck let Microsoft even use there cloud tech and expand the game even further beyond the consoles more players mean more chances of those players spending money and that money either going towards future content/next installment
Sony and Microsoft should strike a deal and put all of their games on each other's consoles, and instead of competing with games, instead compete on price and console hardware. I think everyone can succeed there and let gamers buy whichever console they want.
Porting to multiple consoles costs more money than making an exclusive game. Not to mention, with Xbox console sales being so low, would it be worth it for Sony to port their games to Xbox? Most likely, no. Microsoft is porting their games to PS5 and Switch because those consoles have a huge player base, so Microsoft will make money porting their games. Also, if there were no exclusives, then people would simply buy the brands they prefer, which are PlayStation and Nintendo. Microsoft would be in the same position sales-wise that they're in now, maybe worse, and they'd have to stop producing hardware or produce high-end, high-priced hardware for a niche market. So, there would actually be less competition, and no one would be able to be better than "the other guy" if games were on all platforms. The reason Microsoft even became relevant is because of the exclusives they released on the Xbox 360. That led to higher sales numbers and real competition with Sony. And even after the Xbox One reveal debacle, Microsoft was still competing with Sony until Phil Spencer took over and decided that making great games wasn't a good idea, and look where Microsoft is now because of that horrible philosophy. Don't believe the narrative that Phil Spencer is trying to push, that exclusives are bad for gaming. In fact, exclusives are what keep the competition going. Phil just decided that he doesn't want to compete; he just wants to buy up AAA publishers and try to convince Sony and Nintendo to stop competing as well. And again, look at where that's gotten us. Outside of Hi-Fi Rush, Microsoft hasn't released a good game since 2020. And Hi-Fi Rush's lead developer left Microsoft after finishing that game.
The PC outlook is where Jim Ryan, Herman Hulst and PlayStation are wrong and Shawn Layden is right. Jim Ryan and company suffered from or are suffering from the grass was greener syndrome, believing there was an ocean ocean of PC gamers with 4090 cards waiting on PC for longer, more story rich, high fidelity games and that was a mirage and 900 people paid the price for those ill-advised decisions. There’s too much bad blood (PC Master race rhetoric) and connective tissue (players that own both) between PC and PlayStation for there to be big sales over there.
Helldivers 2 has sold 4 million copies on Steam. PC gamers like to buy games, too. The reason old PlayStation games haven't gotten big sales numbers on PC is because those games are old, and most people have played them. Sony needs to get their games on PC, if not day and date with PS5, then somewhere between 6-12 months after release on PS5. Ghost of Tsushima PC likely won't sell a lot of copies, but if Sony can get Stellar Blade on PC by the end of the year, then that will definitely sell a lot of copies. Also, Sony laying off 900 people could be more about the fact that they've consistently lost money on PSVR and PSVR2.

Great interview guys
The fact that you got Sean Layton to do a podcast is legendary
Thank you 🙏🏽
Appreciate it!
Shawn is very intelligent but also knows business and has a passion for gaming and games! Looking at the state of play 2024, PlayStation have promoted executives that don't understand gaming just numbers and data. Sony is in trouble and they need Shawn!
Amazing interview family, keep up the good work!
thank you
😢 i miss you shawn
Fantastic podcast. This one of the top PlayStation podcast episode, imo, across all PlayStation podcasts from sacred Symbols to ps i love you xoxo. Thank you three very much.
Wow. Thanks. That means a lot a lot to us. We appreciate it
@@JAYBARI_ Well, you deserve the praise.
The questions were alright, it’s when he went on talking is when some really good information came out. Great Birds Eye view on different areas
Aye my boy Persona looking young and full of vigor out here
Appreciate it bro 💪🏾
Great show gentleman!
Thanks Murk
only 3.47k subs and 5.9k views is a damn crime
Frankly, BUYING games is more important than ever these days.
@Mmachine88 The problem is, that's not really how sub service revenue works.
If people were as stingy about all purchases as they were with video games we would have no debt.
Good job fellas. I wish more PS podcast were like this and not "We Hate Xbox" clown shows. And this is coming from a Xbox fan.
Fantastic show keep it up!
Good interview
Katamari Damacy would be PERFECT FOR PSVR2!!!!!
agreed
i bought helldivers 2 on pc beause i dont pay for online on ps platforms.
Absolutely great interview. Thank you for this insight 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job on the interview guys , support you hobby buy ur games!!!!!!
Thank you 🙏🏽
In the presence of a legend
😮 Another legendary one !!! 👀🙌✌️
I'm a Nintendo guy and I found this interesting!
🙏🏽 thank you. Hope you enjoy your stay
This is a amazing interview. Props to y'all.
We as PlayStation fans needed a voice at this moment and you and shu were the only voices that matter still, fck jim ryan and hermen hulst they ruined PlayStation :(
You are RIGHT, AAA games arent unsustainable, doing pc day and date is a BAND-AID, not SOLUTION.
#PeaceLoveLyfe
This guy made dave jaffe cry
3rd party, a dev puts a game on Sony and Sony has nothing to do with it.
examples:
1st Party, Naughty Dog.
😂😂😂😂
Just some feedback on the interview: you guys should try to present more concise questions. It’s too verbose. Otherwise great interview
Thanks. Appreciate it the feedback
Rise of the ronin? Sony doesn't own that.
5 ads in 25min. Sorry guys, I’m switching to an ad blocker. It’s just too much
No hard questions and incredibly ignorant people here asking the boring questions.
JAY BARI & GamingWithPersona would have already known what they can and can't ask him beforehand, no point asking 'the hard questions' ESPECIALLY if Shawn Layden is under NDA not to say anything.
ignorant? wow.. Who said we are journalist?
his answer to subscriptions was weird.. it isnt that black and white.. if someone who hasn't played let's say COD in 10 years but plays it on a sub and likes a skin and buys it for $20, that is money to the dev.
Great interview guys
Thanks. Appreciate the support
