I was trying to preorder something from astrophotography that has just announced a week ago and was told by the retailer that the preorders are sold out and next supply is May 2023. So I'm not bothering, I have already been on preorder for months on other things and over a year on Starlink. I also see on WinWing's site they are upgrading ver 1 preorders to ver 2. That says to me, it will be a long wait.
@@michaelwmcdonald I think the upgrade was planned all along, so nobody who pre-ordered an Orion was getting a v1 anyway. Awesome!!! Thank you so much for making this video, it cleared up a lot of questions I had about the V2 throttle. I just have 2 questions which I can't find answers to. Can you please tell me what exact dimensions are of the throttle base with the F16 throttle guide rail installed? I'm planning on fitting this throttle into my home cockpit console and need to make sure it will actually fit. I suspect it's bigger than the Warthog (which I currently use) but would love to know how much bigger. Also, it looks like it's possible to remove the afterburner detent on the finger lift bracket for the F18 throttle, or am I wrong? Kinda similar to the warthog detent options.
Hello Boggy, unfortunately, we did not get the F-16 guide rails with the V2 throttle so we're not able to answer your question. The V1 guide rails are different so that won't help you. You may want to check the website manual or send post a question there. Sorry we couldn't help on this.
Nice comparison! $50 seems a bit steep for the finger-lift upgrade. Would be more worth it if made from aluminum. (Also, please use a pop-filter on your microphone.)
Thank you for the detailed review! Follow up question: Is the friction mechanism of the main axis updated from V1? I.e. how do fine adjustments with high friction settings feel with V2? I find the V1 tends to get "stuck" a bit and needs a stronger input to get it moving, especially when doing small adjustments, and especially when adjusting after the axis was set at a certain position for a few minutes. I especially noticed this "stickiness" of the mains axis when I started using the Ka-50 collective. It can be very annoying when you need fine adjustments in low hover, for example. By the way, a great comparison would be the Warthog throttle which doesn't stick at all and is perfect for smooth, fine adjustments... I hope the Orion V2 is upgraded to a similar level?
Thank you for your comment. A hardened set screw against aluminum will be problematic in high friction settings. Once a comfortable setting is made, I've found that 10 or more "cycles" will groove a channel in the aluminum. Then an additional adjustment normally is required. We've done WH comparisons in the past. Both Skil and I started with the WH, went to Virpil, then now with Winwing. WH was excellent 10 years ago. Not so much today.
@@wildbillkelso2083 I agree, I also started with the WH and I am now very happy with Winwing which is a huge upgrade. As I said, the only issue I have with the Orion is the smoothness of the main axis (actually for both low and high friction settings). I am not sure what you mean by "groove a channel in the aluminum", could you elaborate? ... My main question is, whether the friction mechanism was somehow upgraded from V1 to V2, or whether it is the same.
I received a response. The friction system is the same as V1. I was mistaken in believing the set screws terminated on aluminum. They terminate on a pressed-on plastic ring. There is a discord group called HOTAS/HOSAS/SIMPIT I would recommend joining. There's a Winwing channel there that would likely help you solve the "stiction" issue on your throttle.

Will the lower part of the F-18 finger lift detents that is installed on a base be in a way of F-16EX throttle grip? The part that goes between the throttle handles and is installed on the base, and is screwed with two long screws that go through the base. It wasn't a quick swap system before (with fiddly setup of rails), and it looks like more things to uninstall / reinstall, if it has to be removed. Also, is there any bending with the new F-18 throttle base plates with finger lift mechanism? Previous version used solid aluminium plates, now we have plastic hollow / honeycomb?
I didn't try to mount the F16 throttle handle with the centre detent rail for the f18 fingerlifts still in place, however checking it just now, it looks like it will foul the centre block of the F16 mounting system, so would need to be removed if you were switching grips. You are right, the new mounting system for the f18 handles, which also accommodate the fingerlifts, are made of what feels like a hard plastic instead of the original aluminium plates. Certainly in the limited time I have had them fitted, I haven't experienced any twisting or bending of the mounts.
Hello nice video! Do you know maybe if there is a way to tighten up the tension of the Throttle way ...the way it goes mechanical ? Its a bit too soft for me...any idea?
Okay, got my throttle base today. Not sure why they shipped all the components separately instead of all in one big box. I would rather get it all at once. Anyway, I have seen that the older version of this base had detents for the throttle for idle cutoff and for afterburner. Is this newer version suppose to have that also? My throttle has the detents on the throttle arms but there are no rods or ball bearings in there to ride in these detents. Is that correct? Am I missing something?
It may become an option once supply side issues subside, along with catching up with orders. Though I couldn't guess what the logistics of that would entail.

Yes, the bottom section of the rails do cover the mounting holes on the Orion base However, you can mount it to a Monstertech/Predator Mounts/Foxx Mounts, or similar plate by using M4 bolts put through the plate from underneath and have M4 nuts inserted in to the slide rails, fitted to the F16 rail mounts. Holds it firm. (Does require some washers, unfortunately I can't add images here).

Till then, flat out not buying it. I just need to see that most used moving part is going to be something I can maintain over time. The finger lift assembly is a welcome component.
I do not know how easy the cables would be to replace, they have moved their position where they come through the upper plate to try and alleviate any potential stretching and crimping of the cables. Anyone know when the pre orders will ship? Ordered apåril 13th (was away when it all went of with a bang at 11th) and i have NO idea when my HOTAS's will even ship. theres no time to back in stock on anything... >.< i just want to give them my money and fly better... (edit.. i preordered in march... 13. 2 days after preorder rolled out)
My pre-order from March 26 is still open. I've read that Winwing fills pre-orders in batches, so it's likely mine will ship out the same time as a bunch of others.
I preordered on March 11 (before V2 was announced) and just had the preorder completed today. Still waiting for the shipping notice, actually. So, it's hurry up and wait, I think. I'd be curious if @Masem1 had their order filled today too. If so, that'd give a guess of how big the batch size is.
It's a que, so there's no way to tell right now. At least a pre-order will lock your price.
stock is back? im not buying because dont have stock
So should I sell my V1 and get the V2?
I did

Whole thing is ruined by that cheap plastic finger lift..
Yikes, don't call it a review if you're getting paid
Skil and I don't get paid. And spending 40+ hours to complete a review doesn't get close to matching our personal hourly rates on any review-kit.
It’s absolutely a review if you get paid
How is there no proper bloody assembly videos
