Loved your reaction and I love this movie! little tidbit about the Majhong game - when Rachel shows her tiles what she's showing Mrs. Young is that Mrs. Young only won the Majhong game because Rachel gave up the winning piece ; if Rachel had not discarded that last tile, she would have won instead. (this is not something I discovered on my own, I learned about it from another fan of the movie who knows about the game :) )
Yes!! I’m so excited to see more of Astrid in the next movie. The post credits scene is actually Astrid’s ex. Not sure when the next movie is coming out, but they’re definitely going to highlight more of Astrid and what happened btwn her & her ex
In the mahjong game at the end, Rachel could've won but she chose to give away a winning piece instead and let Eleanor win. When she shows all her tiles at the end, she's showing Eleanor that she *could've* won but chose not to. This simple act shows Eleanor that Rachel loves Nick enough to let him go, to sacrifice her own love. That family is first. This is what changes Eleanor's mind about her son marrying Rachel. Honestly, Eleanor and Rachel are a lot more alike than Eleanor gave her credit for.
And considering how Nick's family is, I can understand why he hid it. So I'm not mad at him for protecting Rachel from that super shallow, vicious, stuck up, snobbish, judgemental and empty world.
Let me tell you you, this kind of “family loyalty” and superiority is definitely accurate when it comes to traditional Asian families. You’re expected to withstand mean in-laws, affairs, guilt tripping from your parents to fulfill some prestigious job, etc. for the sake of the family. Divorces are still pretty looked down on, especially on women who raise kids on their own. Eleanor looked down on Rachel the second she heard she was American and looked down on her mom as soon as she heard she was a single mom. It’s such a great movie and does show a lot of growth for Eleanor to give Nick her ring.
On these days and reality its really happening, some guy still need validation that he’s capable and anything more than his partner while the woman were trying to feed her men ego cause she’s settling for less. Its a common case for Asian (im asian btw), cause mostly mans are the one who take responsibility and lead the relationship. For women its hard to date a man below her cause the parents or even her whole family would against it while the men she’s dated needs an ego boost. That’s why sometimes it’s better to date someone in your class. Astrid and her ex husband both hurts it’s better for them to just end things even when she loves him it still couldn’t be saved.
I ALWAYS tear up at the (I believe) Cantonese version of Cold Play’s “Yellow” that they play at the end… such an awesome movie! I think they are coming out with a second one!
The version they used of Cold Play’s “Yellow” is actually Mandarin, not Cantonese. But yes, I wholeheartedly agree that them using the Chinese version of “Yellow” is sooooo beautiful!! There is a second movie coming out (not sure when yet), and it’s so exciting to see what they will do next! They’re especially going to highlight Astrid’s relationship with her ex (the guy we see in the post credits scene)
It seems like you two missed it but her initial reaction was because he never told her about his family's wealth or anything about his background. He was using her streaming platform info lol so fair that she didn't piece together he was rich. 😂 His mistake was not telling her when she accepted coming to meet his family. Not because he shouldn't protect himself but so she wasn't walking in totally blind.
32:09 Kina Grannis!!❤ She's a real singer, she's so amazing! i remember finding her in 2010-2012 yt era when there were so many amazing and talented popular asian american youtubers. She kept popping up in videos doing covers, originals, or featured in others' videos.. I saw her live at a free concert in a park 10 years ago or so. Her voice is so beautiful!!❤
Your reactions to the shopping scene with Rachel & her mom at the start reminded me of when I watched this with my coworkers. For context, I’m Filipino. After the mom talks about the significance of colors in Chinese culture, my friend leaned over to me and asked, “Is that true?” Me: I don’t know. I’m not that kind of Asian. 😂 The woman singing during the wedding is actually singing. Her name is Kina Grannis. She’s OG youtube. I remember watching her back in 2007-2010ish, together with other youtube-famous Asian American musicians, like AJ Rafael. The sequel has been in development forever. I hope we get it one day b/c I need to see Gemma Chan & Harry Shum Jr. be cute together.
The sequel has been in development forever...the original cast is going to move on to other things if they don't hurry... OMG..I've been watching Grey's Anatomy season 20 and never connected Harry Shum Jr. as the "extra scene" guy from Crazy Rich Asians. LOL Although, it was a nice surprise to see Astrid find another man after her lousy x.
That line "You will never be enough." is more like a reality check for any woman who will marry an Asian guy, rich or not, coz Asian -in-laws, specially the mom, will always see the imperfections. Basically, in most Asian countries, you marry not just the guy but everything about him, his family and culture coz we consider marriage as a union of 2 families. Nomatter how well you get along with your in-laws, nomatter how long the relationship is, there will always be something wrong coz you maybe brought up differently or how things are handled. This is real in every Asian culture.
Hi, one of the people who’ve been to Singapore and didn’t want to leave😂😂i’ve been many times, i don’t even know how many, since i was a kid. Why? because my grandparents lived there for 20 years! it’s absolutely insane how nice it is. This movie shows a lot of the touristy parts and that’s most foreigners’ experiences. But since i stayed with locals (my grandparents) i got to see the local view of the place. They lived in a small apartment on one of the hundreds of high rises and skyscrapers. once you get to the ground floor everything is at arms reach. park? there’s four of them just 10 feet away for all ages. food? just across the street one of those massive market places with stores and restaurants. bakery? yup just across the street. clinic? same thing. and if you need to go anywhere further away, it’s just a quick bus, taxi or metro ride away
I saw this movie with my bff when it came out. I wasn't too sure about it, but I love it. The mom is just like my mother in law so I think it hits a bit too close for my hubby. Mahjong is kinda like rummy. There's runs and 3 or 4 of a kind. Like another said, Rachel had the winning tile, but tossed it on purpose. By doing so after her talk, she not only showed she can talk the talked, but she walked too. There are 2 more books in this series and I've been waiting for the movies to get done as they are good and there are many twists that come up for all of these characters. SO GOOD! (I'd suggest reading them if you can.)
I go to Singapore once a year to visit family and every time I have to come back to California I end up extending my stay by a week or two. I love it there yall should definitely visit. 🥰
Fun fact: (and book spoilers) .. .. in the book Michael faked having an affair, he wanted to create an excuse for divorce. And in the book we do see the family treat him badly. Just like folks did things to Rachel out of sight of Nick, the family was shitting on Michael behind the scenes But the way he deals with it is really badly, he is a POS, and it gets worse in the sequels. (I just binged all three books.)
Awesome reaction guys...together you're hilarious 😃 Hopefully they are really working on the sequel to this movie but nothing yet. Loved Awkwafina in this; she definitely added the comic relief to this movie. Especially, when she had the clothes ready to go in her car trunk (clubbing, walk of shame etc...) LOL 🤣
40:24 killed me 😂😂😂 anyways I love this movie so much I love watching people react to it keep your reactions coming. Also it's Singapore not Signapore per my knoweledge. Have an amazing weekend😊
Loved both of your reactions to this film. The sequel is officially green lit and we all are anticipating the release. Also side note, if you guys want more in depth details, definitely read the book trilogy this movie is based off among others the author Kevin Kwan has written. We all are excited to see what else you guys have in store on your channels.
yes. it's how singapore do taoist buddist mix funeral. white tee, blue pant(if you are the grandchildren generation n further down the fam tree; and black pants if you are the son/daughter/siblings/cousin generation).
40:24 had me hollering “whoah I will take that”yes same but i would just be happy to have a good man for once The line “it’s not my job to make you feel like a man I can’t make you something your not” still hits after my split with my ex his jealousy and abuse and cheating I warned him he wasn’t ready buy nope still he wanted me chases me got me only to throw it away on a weekend of me being gone
25:16 I think she cares now because of how they are treating her. she also didn't know what he would do. imagine your partner's family/friends did all this to you, how would you react? I don't even wanna think about what II would do😭 but I do think for me, it would depend on how my partner reacts for sure.
Ngl as a Singaporean, i was shocked how many foreigners actually likes this movie Because for us locals this movie was pretty bad with the actual representation of our culture and the highlights of living here. (Barely any racial representation, local slangs, go to spots in Singapore) The locations were obviously the most touristy spots in the country and it featured mainly Chinese folks despite Singapore being the most diverse country in Asia.
The film was adapted from a book series. The writer Kevin Kwan is ethnic Chinese Singaporean. He's from a wealthy family. He wrote about people he knew so most are ethnic Chinese. This is not a film "about Singapore". This is a story about a specific family in Singapore. I really don't understand why Singaporeans criticize the film because "not all ethnicities are represented". This isn't a documentary. This is a fiction based on the author's own family.
Singapore is one of the richest and most beautiful countries ever. Buuut i wouldnt go there, cause im scared of getting arrested for 5 years over spitting gum on the ground.
And the one she’s sitting next to they call her the Queen of Media Kris Aquino her character Crazy Rich Asians Princess Intan and Actress in the Philippines and one more important fact about her she is from a family of politicians her Mother Cory Aquino was the president of the Philippines and also her brother too Benigno Aquino who was also president of the Philippines sadly they both passed away Kris Aquino There’s not one movie she has never been in Drama,Horror, and comedy and was a tv host of a lot of U.S version of U.s Host games like Deal or No Deal
1:50- Keep that same prejudice way of thinking in mind when Eleanor treats Rachel the EXACT same way. It truly bothers me how people whine about white people being prejudice, but think people who aren't white get a pass to be prejudice. Hypocrisy in a nutshell. 3:41- Damn you, Asian Gossip Girl, damn you. And I've seen Gossip Girl, just season 1. That's the only season with good writing. 4:15- Funny how they're having Bible study and gossiping about people. Gossip is a sin by the way.
Awkwafina is great and the other guys his character name is Oliver I laughed when he said "someone needs to finally stand up to Auntie Eleanor...well you, not me..." LOL
"how many times have you watched this movie? 10? 15?" clocked me so mf fast
Sorry Josie 👀🤣
this one of my comfort movie 😂 like prolly in the 30s atp
I lost count how many times, this movie is a gem.
3 or 4x! 😂😂 I love this movie! Bawk bawk b(bleep) 😂😂😂
Loved your reaction and I love this movie! little tidbit about the Majhong game - when Rachel shows her tiles what she's showing Mrs. Young is that Mrs. Young only won the Majhong game because Rachel gave up the winning piece ; if Rachel had not discarded that last tile, she would have won instead. the post credits scene!! everyone misses it lol. Astrid has a new man in her life...
Ooo i didn’t know that ima look it up!
Yes!! I’m so excited to see more of Astrid in the next movie. The post credits scene is actually Astrid’s ex. Not sure when the next movie is coming out, but they’re definitely going to highlight more of Astrid and what happened btwn her & her ex
It’s her ex from the books

thanks!
6:22 - y’all… she’s acting that way cause she didn’t know the man she’s been in a relationship with is rich 😭😭 cause he hid it-
And considering how Nick's family is, I can understand why he hid it. So I'm not mad at him for protecting Rachel from that super shallow, vicious, stuck up, snobbish, judgemental and empty world.
but why was that so hard for them to understand lol
Let me tell you you, this kind of “family loyalty” and superiority is definitely accurate when it comes to traditional Asian families. I’ll never understand how someone would cheat on Astrid.
Edit: also- Rachel’s mahjong hand beat Eleanor’s. She let her win in more than one way.
Actually, according to a book, he didn't. He just pretended to make her jealous, to feel himself better, like, feel "like a man".
On these days and reality its really happening, some guy still need validation that he’s capable and anything more than his partner while the woman were trying to feed her men ego cause she’s settling for less. @@Alexandra_Indina that's even more dumb

6:39 no she's coming from the standpoint that he _didn't_ tell her his family background and she's off to meet them and just, find out?
32:09 Kina Grannis!!❤ She's a real singer, she's so amazing! i remember finding her in 2010-2012 yt era when there were so many amazing and talented popular asian american youtubers. 33:56 ❤😭 the point was grandma was in fact the same as the mother
I've been to Singapore and honestly never wanted to leave!

Astrid’s storyline always hit home for me. I love her line at the end as well.
Yes this is actually the singer in the scene, she's a RUclipsr, remember her covers of Iris and such. Great singer, Kina Grannis

Yes that is really her singing😊. Kina Grannis

I have eaten at the outdoor food court shown in the movie. Its fucking incredible.
i’m on like the 6 rewatch including a few reactions 😅 i love the wedding scene always makes me cry! sooo pretty.
yes. it's how singapore do taoist buddist mix funeral. white tee, blue pant(if you are the grandchildren generation n further down the fam tree; and black pants if you are the son/daughter/siblings/cousin generation).
I think you forgot that the opening scene was in London and not the US. Just based on your comment about the first American we saw.
Someone I knew in High School produced this movie! I did not realize that for years.
I really wish you watched this on your own, to also form your own opinion and not have it influenced somehow by someone who's already watched it.
