One of the reasons that 'chart hits' get so popular is that many of them just get so much radio play etc.. that they become ingrained in people who believe, by default, that those songs are good. Mixed in amongst that are occasional true gems, that certain Dj's have quietly appreciated as well crafted music and then give that air play. But that is a tiny percent of the 'chart'.
