Thanks a lot for this video, it was very helpful! One thing that will make this job a lot easier is if you jack up the front end of the car and insert jack stands on both sides before you start. If you don’t do this you might have trouble pulling the struts out once all of the bolts are removed.
@Jonny: great video, thank you. @RRofick 100%. If only the side you are working on is lifted, the anti-roll bar will do its job. It will prevent the knuckle to go down enough and fully release the spring. If the spring is still partially loaded, even with spring compressors, I did not manage to remove the strut assembly without lifting the other side.
Thanks, looking into the kyb's wanted to see how they look. Being a Toyota tech, quick thing, letting the knuckle hang by the speed sensor wire is not good, 1 10mm bolt and its out of the way so it doesn't break.
Any advice on the upper control arm being seized in the knuckle? I was hammering and wd40’ing for two hours. Tried a heat gun, Half used a BJS but it kept sliding off…
@@Magicstockton Hmm, not sure where your hammering, but try putting a non factory nut on the upper ball joint, just enough so the threads dont show, and hit the nut. that knuckle looks like its perfect for ball joint separator, wonder why its not working.
Good video. Have 2015 awd is350 fsport. Replaced all struts but still have clunking over bumps and loose/ drunk movement when driving especially at 50 plus… Any idea? Tires maybe wear on outside… Sway links???
Didn't you notice that the duster is absent, like completely? That's why it started leaking, cuz dust destroyed the seal. And instead of putting in a new one you just put the old torn one on the new shock... This one will leak soon too. Is it worth saving a couple of bucks? :)
I have a 2010 Lexus IS250 and I was contemplating on getting the KYB Gas-A-Just monotube strut set but since you said your blew out now I’m a little concerned. Are they durable? Lastly, do I just get the struts? I use the original shock spring correct?
Thanks for the great video man. I was able to replace both front struts with your video and both rear struts with another video. Quick question. The left upper control arm bushing bolt just keeps spinning forever. I can't tighten the bolt. Because of that rubber boot, I can't even see what's going on. I tried jacking up the lower control arm like you said but it's still spinning. The right side didn't do that. Any ideas?
Always replace in pairs for anyone watching. Struts affect the braking and handling. Just replacing one isn’t recommended. And the proper terminology is “strut mount” not “top hat”... other than that great video for first timers wanting to do a little shade tree.
Mario Herrera And a lot of Americans also don’t utilize the English language properly. So what’s your point?! If I see it, I will correct it. If you want to cry about it, that’s your choice! I don’t have to justify it back yard, hack wanna be mechanic. There’s a proper way and an improper way to do and say things. But you go ahead and speak for every DIY guy.... laughable
Hi, I enjoyed watching your video. Isn't kyb just-a-gas soft? I have a fsport is250. I felt that it was soft when I replaced it. I replaced it at 160000 miles. However, the problem is that the spring has not been replaced. So I wonder if it's soft. I asked kyb and they said just-a-gas is a hard strut.
Did you not have to remove the stabilizer link? You can see it at 4:08 behind the strut and socket that connects to the lower control arm (the short rod that has 2 circular ends). I followed this video but cant get the strut out, as soon as I got the lower strut bolt off, the strut expanded and is pushing down into the lower control arm. I cant get the lower control arm to drop any lower and Im not sure if its being held up by the stabilizer link.
For anyone who has the same issue where there isnt enough vertical clearance to get the strut out, you just have to make sure the whole front end is jacked up and not just 1 side. This allows the lower control arm to drop lower because the sway bar tension has been relieved.
I just got this car and need shocks but how do I know if my car is AWD or RWD ? an what shocks would you recommend that are the best please help thank you
If your car has a transfer case, front differential, and axles going to the front hubs, you're AWD, if not RWD. I would stick to OEM, unless its for performance orientated driving.
In theory, no, but a loose bot here and there and a few arms disconnected might shift the alignment a bit, but not much. Definitely drive-able, but I would to avoid bad tire wear in the future.
@@JonnyBarajas The AWD has to pop the tie rod. I had to rent a tool. The only tool that went high enough to do it required a slight bend of the backing plate.

sorry mate. good effort but you are giving really bad advice. just changed my shocks on my IS myself and you video showed me not how to do it compared to so many online sources and videos. It’s so funny you edit out when things become complicated. like you say now we need to take this out and then the video jumps to: now you see this out 😂😂😂. Was it really your dad who did the job 😂 I’m not a hater, but youtube watchers, always make sure you check several sources….
now you will have to change your shocks again in 1 years time because you did nothing to specifications. that’s why you are already changing these relatively new KYB shocks. Well some girls might fall in love with you 😂😂😂

sorry, its just as nice as the is350 just a bit slower.
4:00 I smacked that but it didn’t pop up I can take them off can you help me with that
it's the same process as any other ball joint. It takes maybe 3-4 hits, I usually use a mini sledge hammer, something heavy, then it clicks right off.

Does the f sport use different shocks or springs?
Yes
How did you know the strut was bad? Was it too stiff of a ride or bouncy?
Bouncy, The lack of dampening should be the first thing you notice.
Great stuff mate.

im trying to buy an Is 350 but they are not that easy to find everything i see is IS 250 i dont know what is the best option to buy
350 has more power for about the same fuel consumption.
Is this the rear wheel drive
Yes

Si no se escucha el motor del asiento, tal vez ay que reemplazar la placa de circuito que controla los botones.
Were you able to pull the strut out easy after taking off the 3 bolts at the top? I noticed you cut that part out, that's where im stuck right now lol
After removing the bottom, it should slide right out after the top bolts. the Strut should be hanging by that point.
Mine didn’t align. Do those red and blue marks have anything to do with the dot at the top?
Because mine was assembled fine but when i installed it it didn’t work at all.
It did not pop out but stuck at the bottom.
How did the KYBs feel after a while, or is it worth it to just go with OEM?
They are an oem replacement, feel same as oem. Whichever is cheaper.
Definitely go with oem parts on a lexus.....it is quality you want not cheap imitation
Where are the bellows?
Could have put in a new rubber boot.
What about the Strut Mount haveto be bad too!! Lol
Stretching the abs
