No problem! I noticed that this footage wasn't on RUclips yet. It's also the first time I saw Usain when I was only like 14 and I knew he was going to become one of the best ever!
nice post. thank you.
@ThomasRiekki To be precise, Thomas, he has improved by 0.94 of a second (as a 200 metre runner) since he was 16 years of age. But I would argue that, in a race of that distance, an improvement of that amount is very substantial. When the big man broke his own world record for the 200 metres (in Berlin, Germany, in the summer of 2009) his time was 19.19 - which, as we all know, is phenomenally quick. The difference between a 19.19 second 200 metres sprinter and a 20.13 one is
I can't wait to see him in the 2012 olympics
What an Olympic legend he went on to be
thanks 4 da post
I predict he will win back to back gold medals in the 100 and 200m is 2008 and 2012
@usalavy19 That's solid. The winning time at nationals for 15 year old boys in Canada is usually a low 23 and sometimes a high 22. The winner of our 15 year old high school provincials in BC was like a 23.8 or so.
@Ras09true I agree. He is amazingly talented. I like to compare his technical abilities here to his races in Berlin. You can easily see the great work Mills has done with him.
Most people don't follow track and have no idea about WYC or WJC. He was also the silver medalist from the 200m at worlds the year before and most people still thought he came out of nowhere. Lots of people I knew thought he just started track!
Anything he revieves for his hard work he deserves it. Every single one of his medals and millions, and fame, He ran for time at 16 yrs old, and understood the importance early.
I said nothing about the Kenyans, that was Franckbery.
I don't watch track because of national pride, I watch it because I love the sport. I enjoy watching athletes from all countries, it doesn't matter to me where they are from. Dylan Armstrong grew up pretty close to me and as a kid I saw all of his records, but I enjoy watching Rudisha run an 800 just as much as watching Dylan throw the shot.
No problem! Thanks for watching.
I can't believe how eager everyone is to post times and how upset everyone gets about it on here. I ran 11.6 in the 100m when I was 15 and about 24 flat in the 200m. Guess what, I'm here sitting on my couch watching Usain in the Olympics. My friend was running average times in high school and just placed top 15 in the 5 and 10k in London. You just never know.
@Franckbery [Continuing on from my previous 'post' about Usain Bolt]: That is a fact. When the "lightning Bolt" was a 16-year-old youth, he may not have had the sort of physique that Arnold Schwarzenneger had at a similar age, but the fact remains that he was WAY stronger than the average teenage lad in the street. In fact, Bolt was a good deal stronger - at 16 years of age - than most grown men of twice that age.
@pierceys234 [Continuing on from my previous 'posts' about the physical differences between world-class sprinters and world-class long distance runners]: Top class marathon runners tend to be a lot shorter in height than sprinters. What is more, the typical world class marathon runner is an ectomorph, and therefore does not have large, heavily muscled biceps or thighs. At a rough estimate, I would say that many, if not most, top marathon runners have biceps which measure less than 13.5 inches.
@pierceys234 [Continuing on from my previous 'posts' about the physical differences between world-class sprinters and world-class long distance runners]: I would also estimate that, in most cases, world class marathon runners have thighs which measure less than 22 inches in cirumference. Another big difference between sprinters of international standard and their marathon running counterparts is the fact that the long-distance athletes are blessed with an abundance of 'slow-twitch' muscle
exercise when u try to push with highest speed.. for example you can do squat jump when u go from the squat position up in the air or power cleans, snatches..
he was born for this. even b4 he knew it while playing cricket.
Thomas Tyner from Aloha Oregon ran 21.63 freshman year in highschool! He may be in olympics in the future like Bolt!
It isn't your head passing the line that counts, it is your torso.
@ThomasRiekki ahhh my bad, i red your post wrong. and this year we didnt have anyone go under 21 but we had a few go under 21.10 with some headwinds.
I'll try and find some. There is one on youtube of him when he won world juniors when he was 15. Search for that one.
Even after seeing this race some hatez still are hatin and takin crap. You're in denial, see this guy is a phenom, no drugs, he's just a once in a lifetime gem, like Pele or Maradonna,Tiger Woods, Jordon or Kobe etc.I wish i had saved those videos of him at boys and girls champs, and that 19.93 he did at cac games as a 16 yo. By the way he won this race into a -1.1 headwind, so the times he's doing now in a headwind isn't surprising to me.His showmanship was there also, always lively.
That's brilliant ! keep going ! i stopped running for other reasons but yeah .
20.13 as a sixteen year. Thats a damn sophomore in highschool. That is unbelievable.
@TheEctomorph Well it could be said that he was a lot thiner. Since he weights what maybe 74kg (180lbs roughly) according , and he's 1.93m (6'31/2 roughly) according to IAAF.
@Franckbery The muscle growth is caused by lifting weights but they don't really lift for the size but for power.. and a little side effect of that is muscle growth..
@pierceys234 [Continuing on from my previous 'post' about the physical differences between world-class sprinters and world-class long distance runners]: measure more than 15 inches in circumference, and huge, muscular thighs - measuring over 25". What is more, ALL top class sprinters (without exception) are blessed with an abundance of 'fast-twitch' muscle fibres. These muscle fibres have a GENETIC basis, and CANNOT BE ACQUIRED by hard work and physical training/conditioning.
@pierceys234 [Continuing on from my previous 'posts' about the physical differences between world-class sprinters and world-class long distance runners]: sufficient amount of 'fast-twitch' muscle fibres.
Thank you...well said..envy is eating up the haters
Well I hope to see you competing at world juniors next year.
We will see. Bolt is miles ahead of everybody. Gay and Powell are the 2nd and 3rd best ever by quite a bit and Bolt is still outperforming them by a lot. Darrel Brown ran 10.24 as a youth and 10.01 as a junior and has made little impact on the senior stage. His personal best is 9.99. But keep up the hard work because you never know what will happen, but for now, Bolt is quite untouchable for anyone.
@Franckbery agreed...skinny only gets you to be a good distant runner, and that's also why American Football players are really fast too because they're not skinny.
Man I really wish he would of also ran the 100m when he was younger. I'm almost certain he would of gone sub 10 at around 18 years old. Maybe then the doubters would stop saying that he just got fast out of nowhere. He's been crazy fast from the beginning, but had a few injuries after 2004 that put a hault on his progression. But now... well the rest is history. Lol.
I injured my hamstring a month before regionals and I was never the same. The following year, the only time I could muster up was 11.2.
I actually just checked the entry standards for the IAAF 2013 world youth champs and the pdf says you need to be born in 96 or 97. At a glance it looks like it may be limited to just 16 and 17 year old athletes this year.
@Ras09true From Jamaica? Did he qualify for WJC? Those are some serious times too. There is a Canadian boy around 15 running mid 10s, but Canada is only sending one athlete in the 100m because the final at nationals was so windy and nobody made the qualifying time, even though a few guys ran 10.5 in the first round. I think the winning time at the US jr. nationals was around 10.3. If he doesn't go this year, there is WYC next year.
Because junior athletes aren't all required to bulk up if they want to compete at the highest level right? It's just the natural progression. You need to bulk up in order to compete at the highest level. I am from Barbados and Obadele Thompson is a perfect example of this. Remained pretty skinny his whole sprinting life and could never win a major title with the likes of Maurice and Ato around. Still managed to grab a bronze at Sydney. He's an example of where not bulking up will leave you
@Franckbery Admittedly, Mr Bolt was a lot skinnier as a 16 year-old-kid (in 2002 and '03) than he is today, as a grown-up man of 25, in the prime of his life. But to describe the teenaged Bolt as "so skinny" is a gross exaggeration. This sprinting genius ran the 200 metres in a time of 20.13 a couple of months before he reached his 17th birthday - that is an impressive time for a fully-grown man; let alone a young lad of 16. You cannot run the 200m in a time of 20.13 seconds if you are weak
@ThomasRiekki You sure know what you mean. Totally agree ! And there was an american sprinter in the 80s, named Calvin Smith.... another powerful runner for his body weight.
It´s all a mater of how much power you can produce vs your body weight. Just like in a car. And then, there´s the "gearbox", I mean, your running amplitude.
I'm also telling the hatez to look out for a guy name Jazeel Murphy, he pulled up at boy and girls champs this year ,hamstring. He's 16 this yr,last yr this guy ran 10.41 in 100 m and 20.97 in 200m, was expected to go faster this yr, but injuries. Although his father wants him to just run the 200 for now.Don't know if he'll be fit for wj later this month, he's a beast, those times are way faster than the class one boys who are 18 and 19 yo.Also a guy name Odeen SKEEN.
man did he look uncomfortable!! but to be 16 and run that is pretty amazing!! a true diamond in the rough!
Bolt actually won this race into a -1.1w and you heard the commentator said he defied the rain as well. So calculate, if he had gotten favorable conditions what time he actually would have ran here. So when Carl Lewis and other idiots come out and say Bolt came out of nowhere it pisses me off.unlike some people, Carl Lewis must have heard about Bolt , he was an athlete ,so he would normally keep up to date with the sport.
watch marcus harris jr, he was 13 last year and ran a 22.03 at nationals in the us. really fast kid. he'll probably make the olympic team in like 8 years.
@pubuman woah thats pretty insane will u be at london at the olympics
@iSkeetnskidaddle haha I think I was 14 when this race happened and thought he looked way older than me. He was definitely a beast at 16.
Amazing
@senegal1b3 Agreed! World championships next year should be good too!
@physicalgrafiti12345 I don't know what Mr Bolt's EXACT height was - back in the summer of 2003, when he was a sixteen-year-old kid - but I can tell you for certain that he was already WAY over 6 foot tall at that age. To be honest, I would be very surprised if he was less than 6 foot 4" at the time he set a world record (for a sixteen-year-old) of 20.13 in June 2003.
Nah I was just checking how long it would take for someone to respond to such an outrageous comment. Still it doesn't mean I don't think he is.
Because a human's ATP-PC system lasts about 10 sec. That is the primary energy source your muscles use to propel you. Therefore after 10 sec you are no longer gaining speed, you are only trying to prevent losing speed. A good sprinter's 200m time is almost always more than twice his 100m time. Usain Bolt is the same way.
@cmoneyno5 Your friend of 16 was Usain Bolt? :P
@1337inzock yeah good call, but i was shocked how skinny he was, thats is certainly not the case with jack gil
what a legend
@TheEctomorph I know ! but people say here that Bolt was "big" for a 15 y o. He was FAST, he was muscular ok but I know way bigger as 15 y o, and the best example for me is Iron Mike. Never said Tyson could run fast.
Can you link the results or have a video? You should have a shot at winning or medaling at world juniors then this year. If you're bsing or not, you seem to be to young to understand the significance of his achievements.
Look up Amir Rasul on EliteYouth, 21.95 in Boys (13-14) category.
@pierceys234 [Continuing on from my previous 'posts' about the physical differences between world-class sprinters and world-class long distance runners]: fibres. These fibres enable them to run long distances in times which would be way beyond the capabilities of athletes who are well-endowed with FAST TWITCH muscle fibers (i.e. sprinters, long jumpers and high hurdlers). There is no way that Usain Bolt or Tyson Gay could ever become a world class marathon runner, no matter how hard they
@luringcapybara As a matter of fact, that is not a bad time for a youth of your age. Keep working hard at your athletics ... and you may well find that, by the time you reach 21 years of age, you are capable of running the 200m in a time of 22 seconds flat.
so how old is the youth class and how old is the junior class either way DAMN DIS DUDE FAST
exactly I was looking at the records of the ontario championships, and some kid in the 1980's run 200m at age 14 in 21s but he never showed up in the olympics, he must of quit sometime.
I've asked myself that question so many times dude...lol
@ThomasRiekki I dont think the world championships are the same year as the olympics
it depends on how do you lift and what exercise you do.. for power you need to choose explosive movements.. ofcourse biceps curls won't make you more powerful
@pierceys234 Very true. There is an old adage: "Sprinters are born, not made". If that is the case - and there is considerable scientific evidence to suggest that it is - then it is surely also true that marathon runners are born, not made.
World class sprinters do, of course, have very different qualities - and very different bodies - from marathon runners. The typical world class sprinter is around 6 foot tall, and has a mesomorphic physique. Many sprinters have biceps which
@Ras09true yea odean skeen is 15 right now turning 16 in august ran a 10.46 and a 20.84 i cant wait until him and murphy race in the 200. i think murphy would've have ran atleast a 20.7 if he wasn't injured after basically jogging a 21.20 in his first 200 of the season in february.
@ThomasRiekki totally agree with you
Oh damn... he's 16 at this video!
o.O!
@TYLerlittmann For juniors, not 15 year olds. I don't think you had anyone medal in the 200m at world juniors or youth Olympics this year and they would have with a high 20. It's more competitive than in Canada though. You guys have the biggest density of high caliber sprinters in the world.
Someone like Michael Johnson who due to a 'less efficient' ATP-PC system can still run a faster second 100m if they have an efficient glycolytic system, quick conversion to lactate, good buffering abilities and mechanical (ie efficient tissues or running economy) as well as technical abilities that can keep them at maximum speed without decelerating a lot despite poorer acceleration abilities to people like Bolt.
this is so weird, now that he's considering retirement
wow, how tall was he when he was 16?
He was also WJC, so it amazes me how some people could come out after he won Olympic and wc that he came out of no where. These people clearly don't know track.
@123zippy123 no hes not
@ThomasRiekki nationals in the us is like a high 20 something
I ran 10.9 & 22.9 @ age 16, i never trained though. Our school has never had a track. I was the slowest on the team, fastest guy ran 10.3 he was the same age. He ran 20.9 200.
How tf you know you ran those times without a track lol
@@relaxingsounds7782 Those times were at official meets
Alright guys, enough with the times. Your times in your teens may not mean you are going to be a world class sprinter or not. I've seen fast guys get slower or stay the same from their teens and I've seen slow guys get considerably faster in their late teens/early 20s.
@iSkeetnskidaddle the difference??more experience and twice bigger muscles
@Franckbery There have been some skinny 100m/200m runners. Bolt still isn't that big. Kim Collins won the 100m world championships and I remember hearing that he doesn't lift at all. Pietro Mennea, Tommie Smith, etc...Sprinting is a complex task, but the more power you can produce vs. your body weight is important. I think the biggest difference between Bolt here and now is technique. He has only improved ~1 second in the 200m since he was 16.
BREAKING NEWS: YOHAN BLAKE JUST RAN 19.26 IN THE 200 METER.
Kenyans normally do distance races, bulky muscles, help you in sprints not distance events. The Kenyan runners you see would only be able to do distance events ok?
They would never enter the sprints, those need a different body type than the ones that are needed for distance.
@Tylerbmlss Just train and don't give a damn of what people say. I was 14 when I started and I ran my first 200m in 27.88. Now at 16 I run 23.32. Train your strength and do some technical training too.
Dat guy is flying
@mickypure he was 6'5 since 15
Back when Usain Bolt dipped his head at the line in races.
Wow he is already taller than the others~
I'm 14 and my fastest time this year is 24.7.
This guy in my race ran a 23.2
Yeah, it's been getting better tho :)
@osemudiame123 u do know this is 200m right
@123zippy123 No need to spam the comments.
@pierceys234 [Continuing on from my previous 'posts' about the physical differences between world-class sprinters and world-class marathon runners]: tried (because their bodies possess too many 'fast-twitch' muscle fibres and nowhere near enough 'slow-twitch' ones). Equally, there is absolutely no way that Haile Gebressalasie or Paul Tergat could ever have become world-class sprinters - no matter how hard they had tried. The reason being, of course, that they were not blessed with a
he looks like a kenyan distance runner... MAGGGGGAAAA
ha, even back then he was always watching the clock
Man when this guy grows up he's gonna break world records!
aged insanely well
@@kwaaay it was a joke
@@Someone-hi1nt oh shit im stupid thats after the records huh
he ACTUALLY runs time that these lying people on youtube say they do
@Alltimeboxing When Michael Tyson was fifteen years of age (back in 1981) he was probably considerably harder and stronger than Usain Bolt was at the same age. But so f*****g what?! Iron Mike was a heavyweight BOXER ... Usain Bolt is a SPRINTER. It is patently obvious that both guys were blessed with a great deal of natural physical talent... but one of them was put on this earth to excel as a boxer; the other to break records as a sprinter.
@shadow36711 timed it wrong
@adz09ish Ya, why do people think he uses steroids? He isn't that big...and news flash, big muscles isn't all it takes to be a fast runner...
alot shorter back then looks like hes maybe 6 feet, maybe a little taller than that but he definatley doesnt look no 6'5.
@Franckbery Kenyans have different types of muscles.
And then there's also the fact that any runner who continues training is bound to be faster in their 20s than they are in their teens, since they peak at around 28 y-o and all that. Or did you not consider that?
@ThomasRiekki hey im fast as shit but didnt plan on competing later but yeh some of these ppl commenting are smokin something
