  • Jim Butcher is the author of the Dresden Files, the Codex Alera, and a new steampunk series, the Cinder Spires. His resume includes a laundry list of skills which were useful a couple of centuries ago, and he plays guitar quite badly. An avid gamer, he plays tabletop games in varying systems, a variety of video games on PC and console, and LARPs whenever he can make time for it. Jim currently resides mostly inside his own head, but his head can generally be found in the mountains outside Denver, Colorado.
Jim goes by the moniker Longshot in a number of online locales. He came by this name in the early 1990’s when he decided he would become a published author. Usually only 3 in 1000 who make such an attempt actually manage to become published; of those, only 1 in 10 make enough money to call it a living. The sale of a second series was the breakthrough that let him beat the long odds against attaining a career as a novelist.
All the same, he refuses to change his nickname.

Never doubt your books have fans enough to finish a book. Your characters live in our imaginations, and I know we reread and relisten to all 3 of your book series over and over, waiting for the next new book. No matter if it is the 1st time or the 50th time, they are still amazing. Thank you for sharing your creativeness with us.

1:04 “How has the writing been going and what do you hope to bring to the reading audience with the 2nd book in the Cinder Spires?“
2:23 ”Did the whole book come about in this past year? Did you have part of it already written?”
2:54 “Which is better? Dogs or Cats?”
5:48 “Have you ever had a character that you created that you thought would be an epic character no matter what the plot is? Or have you had an idea for a plot that would be epic no matter what characters you cast?”
8:45 “What is the allure of an epic EPIC Fantasy series? What is the draw of writing that series and what kind of weight does that series carry over what we consider market fiction? Is there something more weighty to epic fantasy?”
12:55 “Did you start writing Codex Alera after Dresden?”
13:40 “How did having two series to work on help you creatively to kind of keep you from going crazy?
16:30 “Writing Dresden from the first person perspective and detaching yourself [Jim] from him.”
19:00 “a nod to Hornblower in one of Jim’s books and why he incorporated them.”
22:00 *I’m not sure how to type this question, but it’s worth seeing Jim’s answer*
24:28 “What’s your favorite roleplaying game and why is it Pathfinder?”
26:20 “The life of a novelist can be very lonely. Does having roleplaying outlets feed you creatively?”
29:30 “Do you ever have the idea to revise or reuse dumped books and ideas you’ve had in the past?”
33:00 “Looking back, was there any one piece of advice from your teacher that wasn’t getting through to you until you did something that helped you learn?”
36:40 “Do you ever outline a complete series when you start a new one like what you did with Dresden Files?”
38:55 “How do you maintain a balance between your author life and your real life?”
43:33 “Are there things you read, watch, listen to for your mental health or simple enjoyment?”
45:18 “What is it like to see your progeny [James Butcher] take up the family business?”

The second Jim said that he would have wanted "The Lord of the Rings" to be more action packed, with more Aragorn and a Gandalf being less of a subtle player, I had a quote from "Changes" (Dresden files 12) who immediately popped into my mind.
"Tolkien said that you shouldn't mess with wizards, for they are subtle and prompt to anger.
Well, he got it partially right.
    Fuck subtlety!"

I will quote you Jim in the Harry Dresden series...
"It's okay to like both." "Blasphemy and lies"
We all know that Mouse rules the roost and is a Good Dog. 😂
Jim, thank you for these awesome stories. Your imagination is a very scary place sometimes, but I love exploring it through your stories.
I can't wait to see what you continue to do.
    Best wishes from Dixie.

But does he though? Or does Mister just allow Mouse to believe he's in charge. I think we all know the real answer.

I think Dresden is more immortal than Jim realizes. It has the attributes he desires from a fantasy novel - timelessness. I will reread the Dresden Files over and over again for the rest of my life and if I ever have kids I'll be sure to introduce it to them too.

This is one of the best Butcher interviews I’ve heard. Great questions! Some I’ve never heard asked of him before.

Love Jim's stories, good to see he is doing well and has a good plan for the Dresden and Cinder Spires worlds. After having read the Codex Alera Series at least once a year for the past 10 or so years, it would be nice to see a follow on with Tavi, Kitai, Varg, Max, etc. and how the Vord are finally defeated (I have faith). As the interviewer said, I don't expect Jim to be able to sate all our 'wants' as they could take infinite time but that is the problem with outstanding writers like Jim and others, David Weber, John Ringo, etc., They always leave us wanting more than they can possibly give. I'll be happy with what they can give and thank them for that. Thanks Jim!!, and Thank you Dabble for this interview posting.

the 1st book, felt very much like a table top RPG where the party is kinda forced togeather, all in all, a good book, with a new magic system, thats going to be fun to learn about, but dang, i hate the cats. ...they feel, like they are made for a specific demography. and forced into the book.
