I've found that one of the best ways to heal oneself is to focus outward, and to determine a life mission for oneself that's directed to the real world. Another method is to compose a "resume" -- objectively, if you were looking for a job, what are your skills? Both hard and soft skills? What are you good at? Are you kind? Do you seem to have insights that no one else notices until you point it out? I had an epiphany when I was in the frame of mind that you're describing -- getting very down on myself, etc. -- and then, it hit me! I would NEVER say such things about myself when applying for a job!!! "Oh...yeah...I'm lazy...I don't really want to work...", etc. Who would hire someone who had nothing to offer? If you get angry and dislike getting set off so easily, then let your "adult you" step in and acknowledge, "Yes, I'm angry BUT perhaps this isn't the best time to express it. Let me take a minute and think about HOW I want to respond." As Kahlil Gibran said in The Prophet, "“You have been told that, even like a chain, you are as weak as your weakest link. This is but half the truth. You are also as strong as your strongest link. To measure you by your smallest deed is to reckon the power of ocean by the frailty of its foam. To judge you by your failures is to cast blame upon the seasons for their inconstancy. Aye, you are like an ocean, And though heavy-grounded ships await the tide upon your shores, yet, even like an ocean, you cannot hasten your tides. And like the seasons you are also, And though in your winter you deny your spring, Yet spring, reposing within you, smiles in her drowsiness and is not offended.”
wow, this one hit home for me! I have been stuck in this place overwhelm of having an extreme self awareness of all the things that need to be “fixed” but not knowing where to start. Just being completely paralyzed by my imperfection because i see it everywhere. Focusing on what the world is currently calling for you to work on….wow…. I will be doing that. Thank you!
Hey Miles, Thank you for sharing your insights, I could find myself in it. While I feel it is super important and potent to do shadow work, we should have compassion for ourselves while going through it and not lose sight of our inherent worthiness. We are the pinacle of God's creations and our trauma is just mud, we can wash off. I feel sometimes I get caught up in the feeling of "I am the mud". So thank you again for this beautiful reminder!
