Titus 3:1, "Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, ...”
Interesting points:
1. In this verse, Paul exhorts Titus to instruct the Christians under Titus' leadership so that they would not allow the infamously immoral culture of Crete to influence them.
Paul uses the word "remind" which means these teachings were not new as he undoubtedly taught them when he was at Crete with Titus. Three specific commands are given in this verse:
a) First, believers are to be "subject to" or "submissive to" authority figures - a frequent teaching of the New Testament. As 1 Timothy 2:1-4 instructed, we should pray for governing leaders as well.
b) Second, believers are to "be obedient," which is distinct from being subject to/submissive. A person who refuses to comply with an unjust law, but who accepts the resulting punishment from the government is being submissive although not obedient. In most cases, Christians are to comply with the laws and instructions of authority figures although, as Acts 5:29 reminds us, believers are to obey God when the commands of God and men contradict.
c) Third, believers must "be ready" to do good works. This parallels Ephesians 2:10, which teaches that we are created in Christ to do the good deeds God planned for us in advance.
Application.
Brothers, it is easy to lose sight in this age of “armchair experts” that we are called to respect, submit and obey those in authority over us, praying for our leaders (both spiritual, governing (political), and even our bosses). This does not mean that we cannot weigh the merits of their decisions, mandates and laws but we are called to submit and obey unless there is a conflict with God’s Word.
In all things we ought to be ready to do the good works planned for us in advance, whether it be to build the Kingdom, influence politics, right injustices -- all for the glory of God.
May the Lord give us discernment on how best to fulfill His purpose for us even as we submit and obey to the authorities He has installed over us.
