As a teen, I was listening to my new Judge Dread vinyl, Quietly in my bedroom. My Mum was listening at the door & I expected to get an earful. But much to my surprise, she laughed & commented, "he reminds me of Max Miller to music". Bless her, she wanted to hear more of his songs & actually got me to record The Judge on cassette for her. Great memories, God bless you Mum, & Alex Hughes. Rip
Bless your Mom!
Similarly, I bought Big Six and Big Seven aged 14. But oppositely, I played them to cheer up my mother while she was lying ill in bed. At that age you don't really understand when someone is dying from breast cancer. Ironically three years later, I met him accidentally at a bar in Leysdown On Sea. He was promoting his latest, (and possibly his worst) single "Y Viva Suspenders"!.... Despite addressing him as Alex, I somehow managed to get his autograph scribbled down on a Park Drive cigarette packet, but I didn't get a chance to tell him about my mother's dilemma, because a fight had broken out between some Skinheads. At that moment he said " You'd better get out of here son, there's some naughties going down!". I didn't need telling twice, so I buggered off as quick as I could. Thankfully I never did buy that record, but to this day I can't help thinking that he probably did me the greatest favour by ushering me away..... although the fight possibly started, because they heard me call him Alex...proof positive that familiarity breeds contempt!
Brings me right back to when I was a teen, big up the Judge.
My dad used to play these when I was a kid. They’re so much fun. Shame they’re not so well known
This music was banned from the radio when I was a young lady brilliant
Being a rude boy and having this at the same time you couldn't get any better.
OMG you just whisked me back to my childhood in the 70's, Thank you! :-D
This is legendary!!
Fucking love these tunes skinheads forever
This was one of my kids favourite songs 🤣
THe BEST OF.REGGAE MUSIC
It's more ska than reggae I'd say
The biggest selling white solo (or is that Polo?) REGGAE (Not Ska) artist in history, and still gets no plaudits for putting Trojan on the map. Not even mentioned in the recent documentary "Rude Boy - The Story of Trojan Records". How rude is that? Alex Minto Hughes, AKA "Minto the Unmentionable". Good job he made a mint before shuffling off 25 years ago today, (13/3/98) cos the BBC won't be celebrating, until they and Lineker make Patch of the Day.
its like a cross between Father Abraham, Baron Knights and two sniggering 13 year old schoolboys
I love these songs ..
