They will be checking the foundation; it's very possible that 'sinkhole' is a key factor here. But we won't know until an investigation is in place. I hope they've dragged their civil engineers out to start looking at the ground!

The property owner is a victim also. I have several tenants on apartments building that passed the 40 year inspection. This Surfside Building was a condo and each apt owner can rent it to tenants. It is not a building just for leasing . The building must have a HOA that paid for the insurance of the building. Tenants will paid for tenants insurance to cover their personal property . By law the inspection is done when the building is new and construcción is finished and also when it reaches the 40 year. I guess from that should be another 40? like in New York that those buildings are more than 100 years

They can't confirm a death until they have a body. Bodies in a building collapse is not unlike throwing ice cream through a hot cheese grater, they are mostly looking for bits and pieces. Hard to hear it put like that but that's the reality of the situation. Hats off to the Search and rescue crews and the Medical examiner teams.

Think that's all they found so far. They have no idea how many are missing, once they get the debris cleared and find out exactly how many were inside then they can give actual numbers. 130-189 units are being reported depending upon who you get the info from, so in a few days they will have better information. It's such a sudden tragedy.

Wife & I moved moved from a high rise condo several miles from the location of the collapse. Wouldn't be surprised that a contributing factor is years of folks buying a condo unit, remodeling the interior without city inspections/permits, and removing load bearing walls. Buy a 1 bedroom, remove critical walls and you got a 2 bedroom. Open kitchen/living room floor plan? Take out some walls. Make more $$ on a re-sale flip or charge higher rent.
    Multiply that x40 years.

This why we have Building Code Enforcement, with each agency in every county.
Their job is to inspect & prevent structures from going into operation if they are at risk towards falling apart.
Its obvious that the buildings were NOT up to code, and should have been, over 2-5 years in advance.
Now they have to do a whole ass report on why the structures fell apart, how many perished, who it was managed by, Dates, signatories, funding & later who oversees cleanup & demo. Then send it to the County & state for review. This is a horrible headache.
I'm a city employee myself so I know this.

Not to mention, there was some human made earthqake near the site recently, right? (The explosion was so big it caused a 3.9 magnitude earthquake roughly 160 kilometres away.) Could be linked.

@@andreamarshall911 Very sad. Sad for all those who died, but you're right the little children 😔 definitely break hearts. May their souls rest in peace.
The sad thing is this horror keeps repeating in our 21st century world. Too much politics and many times no consideration for the innocents.

When the lawsuits settle I'm sure they'll be able to afford some nice homes (assuming they survived).
