One of the most exciting parts of this process is learning how to adjust the material properties of the iris to make it more believable in blender 3d tutorial. You can add a touch of reflectivity to the iris to simulate the glossy surface of the eye, or incorporate iridescence to give it a more dynamic and vibrant appearance. You can also play with transparency to create a more realistic look and feel.
Another exciting aspect of creating this Animatable Iris Texture in Blender 3.4 is exploring how to add noise and randomness to the iris. This can give the eye a more natural and organic look, as no two eyes are exactly the same. You can use the built-in noise and randomization features of Blender to create a unique and eye-catching texture that captures the essence of your character.

I really really tried with this tutorial, but man I wish there was any kind of clarification. I think it would be so helpful if we could at least see the buttons you are pressing and the moment the snap tool is used and the "eye" layer is deleted I was out of there. I couldn't figure it out for hours. I'm excited for the time in my blender journey where tutorials like this support my growth. Right now, this style is a bit more discouraging for me. Thank you for taking the time to create it though. I hope to revisit and try again further in my blender journey.
Me too , The iris , the lines showed up in 1/4 of the eye . 1/4 is white . I don't know what I am doing really . I've messed with all the nodes trying to fix it . Hopefully I'll figure it out . Goodluck to you also ! There's not just one way of doing something in Blender . A lot to remember . However , the more you do things the better you'll become . There's a lot of good teachers on YT . Don't let one thing discourage you .
Have you solved this problem? I too spent many hours and couldn't attach the grid
I have the same problem
Hi , I had the same issue but I realized that I right clicked instead of left click . Left click instead and it would snap
@@amazinobut it seems like he only select the grid mesh, but how??
This right here is a gold mine 😭. Thank you so much . I successfully made my first eye ❤️
I played around with this thing and a crucial info is missing from the video so that any viewer can actually make a custom eye based on these instructions. Mapping Z = -1.4 in this example. That is the value you can change in order to align the color ramp transparency if it cannot be positioned further than half of the eye on your side as well. Other than that, the video is good.
I've downloaded blender like 2 days ago. And this is the most helpful tutorial i have found! (I probably should have learned the basics first probably but meh) If a newbie like me can do that with your guide, anybody can. Thank you so much
Neat tutorial, straightforward and well explained! I also transferred it to cycles with relatively few changes, which is also definitely a plus.
Idk what tutorial you watched but I'm 2 minutes in and it hasn't explained anything xD
Just "do this, now do this" not "Do this because it does this" once from what I can tell.
@@Incrementium If you really want to be nitpicky, then yes, this tutorial does not really explain why to do certain things and how the used nodes work for example.
But it doesn't really need to do that, because as long as you follow it step by step, even as a total beginner you can create basically the same effect... Which is the whole point.
The sort of knowledge you are looking for is not something you'll often find on RUclips. I'm not saying you won't find it anywhere, but usually people want money for courses in which they tell you all the why's to how's. It's not really needed though to get proficient with Blender, as it's mostly just practice, and for that, videos like this are great.
how did you transfer for cycles?
Exactly what I needed. I am working on a new character that needs a good pair of eyes. Update now that I'm rigging. The fact that the Mapping is set to object, causes all the texture data to slide around the eyeball when the eyes is skinned and moves around. Solution is to parent the eyeball to the DEF bone instead if skinning it like the rest.
Why can’t I get my eye layer to snap to my outer like in 1:37 . I have the selection. I hit g without moving mouse. Left click. Boom. Nothing happens the selection disappears and it’s not snapped to the outer. I checked that my snap magnet key was turned on and everything.
check your objects origins, or check if all transforms are applied before snapping things. most of the time i have an issue, is something as simple as that.
and how to use mirror mode to this eye?
at 5:40, I can't see the black circle of the iris ! I don't understand why !
Did u find the solution I am stuck at the same place
thank you for the big help to learning this and nodes , good luck
I need help, I was able to make my eye and all but when I mirror the eye to the other socket the textures on the other eye does not show up the same way as in the original
stuck at voronoi texture part.. when i change the previous mapping node type to Normal, the iris pattern is not radial.
same, I know your comment is old but did you maybe find a solution?
i turned the iris into UV texture. It ended up making the eye appear glowy but thankfully that worked for my project. I imagine there's a way to keep the iris procedural but project it in UV space but I didn't have time to learn how to do that! @@tetmayer2015
Same here. I'm using 3.6.2. I get stuck at this part and can't complete the tut :/ hopefully someone can figure this out.
shift alt at the start doesnt seem to work to select the loop i am using blender 4.1
It be very nice if there's keyframes as the AI voice is sometimes unclear or too fast.
Thank you for this tutorial
At 1:33, how does he only select the grip fill?
This is great!!! this video should have a lot more views
My mapping coordinates are really messed up . -0.4 X/ Y does not move it correctly . I had to manually calibrate it so it falls in the front . Anyone has any ideas why this got messed up in my project ?
Same i have no idea
Thank you for this man. I finally finished it haha.
I got it to work. But, the Scale on the Noise Texture doesn't make the Voronoi wiggle in distortion like yours does.
Tried to use the same number in mapping location but it never worked like the video. The black area always ended up at the top, not the front and when I tried to change the white-black colors, it moved only in vertical. For now I "fixed" that changing the numbers from:
X: -0.5
Y: -0.5
Z: -1.4
to:
X: -0.5
Y: 0.35 (at least that's how I could match it with my model)
Z: -0.5
I'm using blender 4.0. Let's see if I can complete the tutorial.
Edit1: Have to do it again with Voronoi Texture. Instead of changing Z, I did it with Y. If I tried to do it with Z, the black lines were parallel, not coming from the center.
Awesome Tutorial! Tank you for Sharing! :)))
I couldn't do it after 6:50. I decided differently - I deleted Mix Color, and connected Noise Texture to the lower Mapping in the Rotation slot
Did it help? Like it so it helps others!
Love you all! Always yours, white fox ^_^
I followed this tutorial a few weeks ago while moddeling a character for a study project and i'm starting the rig process at the moment. So, when I move the head (and therefore the eyes) the iris just disappear. If I do understand correctelly, they're bound to their original position, something like that, right?
Like, this happens in edit mode (as normal, I guess) but also in pose mode, so I assume that this will be an issue while animating it. As it's probably clear by now, I'm kind of a noob at those things yet so, any idea on how exactly should I resolve this problem? I imagine it would be something like typing some simple code instead of a flat number at some place during the node process, I just don't know neither what neither where. Besides that, really good tutorial, ty.
Aparentelly I solved the main problem just changing all the iris stuff to UV and changing some parameters, which makes sense, since they wore attached to the object, that stays still while being posed/edited/etc. The issue now is that I can't use the value node to re-size the iris, cause the parameters i've had to set to make everything look the same as the tutorial makes the scale also change the position of the black part of the iris, so as I scale it, it moves diagonaly.
I'm not sure if that's something you would be able to help me since i've had to set specific values to make my project work, but again, i'm a noob making assumptions based on noob knowledge. Anyway, if this became a common issue, I'd ask you to answer how exactlly prevent this situation to happen. Ty.
@@pedrofmra could you please tell me which parameters you have changed to solve apparently the problem please?
one of the best man !!!!!
1:31 - this part didn't work for me. when I press G, not moving the mouse & left-clicking - the iris part shifts way outside of the eyeball.
it's probably you moved your "outer object" using object mode instead edit mode . to fix this right click your "outer object" on Object mode -> set origin -> origin to giometri and done
@@yudigunawan1570 its not working
😭😭this had been the hardest tutorial to follow i have come across with many important details omitted from the narration. Nice concept but more work is needed on teaching it😢
This is not a basics tutorial. it's assumed you should already know what are you doing. That why there are plenty of basics tutorials or full explanations of how blender works. Heck, blender has ALL documentation and people never bother in going and read it. READ, it's important. you cannot complain on details being omitted if you don't look for that information.

This is the solution I found to be able to let me get past the 1:40ish part and finish the tutorial.
this is my problem right now. damn this blender
Thank you. It's been very useful.
A big thumbs up!
Thanks! This worked like a charm!
Masterful, thanks a lot.
No Hablo Español. Well, I make another eye design, So, I think i might try this way.
I have used the shader for my character's eyes. However, I want to animate it, but when I move the character, the shader doesn't work correctly anymore. I tried baking it, but I always get a black image texture.
Is there another way to bake the shader and use it as a texture, or can I somehow freeze the position so that the eyes remain as desired no matter where the character is in the scene?
I might be being overly pedantic - but my pupil isn't as cylindrical as yours. I haven't altered any nodes. Any ideas? Great tutorial by the way!
Love love the tutorial! Can you explair or make a video how to export the eyes to unity preserving the shaders and dynamic pupils?
did you figure this out?
I can't figure at 1m45 the clipping, then erasing outer sphere. For me it clips all right, but if I delete outer sphere it's still all gone. What did I missed?
That's where I'm stuck as well. His selection of the grid fill seems fast but I just selected the polygons turn on snap to face and check the box then move but don't move it doesn't seem to do what is doing.
I'll let you know if I find a solution.
I got through it if your interested?

Thanks for the video! Ama link it when I finish my project.
Help, when i try to color the iris, only the color of the pupil changes :(
Can somebody help me to fix this Problem?
Thanks Bro, it helped me a lot
0:25 the "Add UV Sphere" menu isn't there for me and im running version 3.5, what did i do wrong?
There's no such thing as Add UV Sphere Menu. But you do have to go to a couple of menus to get to the selection called UV sphere.
Press shift + a.
There will be a menu that pops up. Select the first option called Mesh. A different menu will pop up and you can scroll through the selection to UV sphere.
Or go to the top of the screen to the set of tabs right below layout, modeling sculpting...
there should be a menu called "add". Click that and it will drop down. Under add, select Mesh and a different menu will pop up. Scroll through the selection and you shall come across "UV Sphere".
I'm not using 3.5 but I'm sure the shortcuts and the UI can't change that dramatically, right?
Thank you for your shared..🤩
You earned yourself a sub my guy! Great voice over btw!
great video thanks S2
How can i animate the eye ? It doesn t move !!
And thank you for the video
When you see "mapping" node in the tut - it's a skipping flag. I don't know a less reliable thing in blender. You can't animate these eyes, as iris stay in place because of mapping set to "object".
After all struggles I’ve made these eyes and rigged them, but when I tried to animate my character head with those eyes : irises disappeared . I’ve noticed while following tutorial that changing location ruins irises shader system. Tutorial is good and informative but isn’t it a bit useless if it not work while animating
This is perfect, thanks for sharing
This was a very lovely tutorial. it has helped me out with a project I was working on. thanks for this.
the grid is not snap to the outer sphere and how do u Select the grid on the other sphere🤔
Great tutorial! Thank you..
I was so close to finishing the eye, but the is no mix shader and now i'm stressed because I got this far and I can't complete any eye tutorials, I need help with that mix node. I don't know what to do,
there is a mix shader. it's just called different. there are many. just add nodes until you see the one that has the same options as the one you see in the tutorial. it happens all the time as blender updates very often and some nodes are added or removed for being redundant.
Great tutorial
thankyou so much!
change my mind this video is bad 1:32 doesnt work on blender 4.0 its so frustrating. you have the eyes and outer renamed backwards!!!!!!
Yep just ran into this. It's broken in 4.0
Thank you so much
bro if u wanna display ur shotcut keys on the screen just install the keycast addonn so we will all see the shortcuts
I was able to create a similar eye and I followed each step but my render is noisy. How can I fix that? I'm using Blender 4.2.
since 4 blender transparency works a lil different, moving colorramp positions closer together does lower noise on the edge of the iris, render method blended + transparency overlap off cleans up the grain
NiceEye
Thanks!!!
How do you select JUST the grid?? Great tut!
I was struggling with that too, I solved it selecting L, If it doesn't works, Select the center and CTRL + to expand the selection
Bro the problem is it cant to mirroring, and when duplicate it will no same, how to fix that
set origin to geometry when duplicating
Thank you!
Muchas gracias.
Excellent.
Thanks, everything works fine but I can't understand how some people do this by themselves... Shader editor is so crazy and confusing..
heavily lost on time stamp 1:26
don't need to do project individual elements anymore since it's updated, just face project
Bro, if the eye has moles, how can I make them?
Great tutorial but how do you move it from shading to layout
Where are the hot keys, I don’t understand anything, how do you do it?!
thanks ser
how would you export this too a game engine?
No key binds display and the tts speed is poor
do u have a tutorial of rigging the eyes?

Any way to do this in Cycles?
Cycles > Eevee, honestly.
why doesn't it work in cycles??(
hold ctrl and shift nothing happen for me
It's add-on
this does NOT work well in 4.0 i am struggling lmao

BRO YOU'RE INSTRUCTIONS ARE CONFUSING ESPECIALLY HERE AT 1:42, IT DOESN'T WORK!
Been stumped on the same thing; what made it work was: FIRST select the grid in the eye. Then using ctr and select both inner and outer eye in the listing on the right (both then in edit mode). Select in the 'snapping' tool (where face orientation is selected) ALL the target selection. Now do the g + Left mouse click and it should snap now. If this doesnt work for you... then it was a fluke, but here it worked. good luck!

Appreciate it but dude ,it was a pain in the ass trying to read all those small numbers and to see what changes you have made in the shading
I finished it if you wanted help?
this eye cannot scale or move because of the texture coordinate is locked in the origin of the object, if you want to use this eye for character its going to be useless
Can you please share it with us
I dont have enough brain cells to deal with computer voices
How the f*ck do you select the grid mesh???
This video felt longer than 11 mins
Doesn't work
why EEVEE💀
Just curious. Are results better with something like this on cycles instead?
No but one of my textures only works in cycles
