WTF Happened to Scott Speed?

- Some of the Red Bull juniors that make it to Formula 1 fall by the wayside. One of these drivers was Scott Speed - the last American to compete full-time in Formula 1. But why did his career in the topflight of motorsport last just a measly one and a half years?
Special thanks to Cranky Yankee F1 for joining this project!

Gunter Steiner: *is afraid of Scott Speed fok smashing his door*
I was at Scott Speed's last F1 race, the absolutely bonkers 2007 European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. I'm quite certain I remember seeing one of the Toro Rosso's aquaplaning sideways across the tarmac in front of us, just after the (then newly christened) Schumacher S corner. I'm not sure if it was Speed or Liuzzi, because I've never been able to see it back on any TV registrations or trackside recordings. Either way Franz Tost was not impressed with his performance and that was the end of Scott Speed's F1 career.
As far as I can recall, both of Toro Rosso's went out. Speed was one of the first guys, then Liuzzi and I remember, Tonio almost hit the Safety Car while sliding. This is not a 100% sure, but I think that was the scenario
@@3062330623 Liuzzi almost split the safety car in half and ended in the first corner gravel trap like so many others. I'm not sure exactly what happened to Speed; I suppose we'll see that in this video soon enough. But whatever I saw happen in front of me on track, that wasn't the end of the race for that particular driver. I'm pretty sure they recovered from the slide and drove on, which is probably why we've never seen a replay of it on video.
@@Astfgl I'm pretty sure Speed spun off too. There were like 7-8 drivers, I think Hamilton, Rosberg, Button and Sutil also went out in that corner, and maybe even a Super Aguri. Liuzzi was the most spectacular one, that was scary as hell. About Liuzzi, I actually feel sorry for this guy, He was a great talent I think
I think the race is on youtube ;)
Franz tost should not have done that shit
I'd love to see a full video on Redbull's NASCAR Misandventures
That was a hilarious disaster

It was really weird how Andretti just threw him out after a few races in FE , even though he did pretty well in most of them.
He put him in his Rally cross car, he did ok in it.
$$$$$
They tried like 8 drivers in 2 seats and then they stick with Simona da Silvestro... No offence to Simona, she is pretty decent, but there were guys like Charles Pic and Speed (even Justin Wilson, R.I.P) who proved they probably more worthy of that particular seat.
@@3062330623 Might have been the funding , that is a big factor.
@The Ferrari Guru34 Yeah I agree, Simona is a great driver, I just think Pic would have deserved that seat more, I really thought He was a top talent (maybe I was wrong)
Scott Speed was just one of many drivers in history who passed through F1 without glory nor shame. he wasnt a bad driver at all. i mean, yeah, his performances in F1 were nothing special, although to his defense he didnt really have a car that allowed him to do wonders, i think he just performed as decent as he could with the machinery he had. then again, he's a driver whom i remember in the F1 grid from when i was watching it as a kid, and its good to know things have gone rather well for him. leaving Toro Rosso after what Franz Tost did to him was undoubtedly the best he could've done
Random person: Hi Scott... what's your last name?

Speed's F1 team claimed they fired him due to performance. His performance was greater than the other driver, who did not get fired. Thus, the team claim was, as one of the American TV race callers said, "Spurious." Watching Speed race in the rain in A1GP on slicks, destroying the competition who were spinning off with rain tires, showed how phenomenally talented he is.
"The only thing left to do was to go to Paul Ricard for a final test" Going to Paul Ricard, That should have been the biggest of red flags right there.
Last Life Left I’m sure one of the 5735678909764345757802 layouts is actually decent
Imagine passing up on Ryan Hunter-Reay and AJ Allmendinger for Scott Freaking Speed
it's funny because the NASCAR side of things, Red Bull replaced Allmendinger for Speed, who admittedly performed better there, but that was down to Red Bull being less inconsistent in terms of speed (the primary car actually had race winning speed on occasion in years 3 and 4 as opposed to years 1 and 2) as opposed to Allmendinger being trash.
@@K9RacingAndStuff Dinger is definitely the better oval guy, just wish he wanted a full time return, though I'm glad he's enjoying part time Xfinity. Red Bull definitely didn't give him good equipment, since the guy is clearly a road course favorite in any class. I love him at NBC though, so I won't complain.
@@caleblee7897 Can't really fault Red Bull there; the best Toyota team there in 2007 was either the 83, 22, or 00, none of which were particularly high bars.
That said, there's basically no excuse for Speed DNQing 2009 Red Bull equipment when Vickers won and made the chase that year.
Honestly, this year pretty much showed us that if you give Dinger good equipment, he can compete on ovals.
I mean, allmendinger wasn't any better at nascar either
Robert Vega he drove mostly for midpack teams in nascar tho
In 2020, things are looking good for us Americans. We have young talents like Oliver Askew, Logan Sargent, and Colton Herta. One of them could definitely end up in F1.
Nah. The ladder is in Europe. They have the skill needed but are not in the right continent.
MSportsEngineering Logan Sargent is competing in F3 :)
You forgot Juan Manuel Correa.
MSportsEngineering Colton raved in Europe I think F3 before coming to Indy. I think he will stay there. I think Americans just don’t like being based in Europe. Also all the drivers seem to speak 3-4 languages fluently outside the native English speakers, so probably hard to fit in. Eddy Cheever seems grew up in Italy, Mario Andretti is an Italian immigrant, besides Scott Speed and Rossi, can’t think of an American without Euro links really making it in the F1.

Can you do a video about Alex Yoong? As a Malaysian, I remember growing up hearing about how historic it was when he got into Formula One, but he pretty much disappeared after one season, got into A1 GP, and then disappeared again with the whole thing went out of business.
Wouldn't say he disappeared as he's basically a pundit for F1 in the Fox Sports channel
Always watched him on fox sports so I knew about him more as a tv host for the races but I knew he was a former f1 driver after
Or how about Rio Haryanto? F1's first Indonesian driver, if you will.

I was watching a lot of F1 when Scott Speed was in it. I was a bit surprised to start up rFactor's ARCA '08 mod last year and find Scott on the roster there; I was even more surprised to look up the results of the real series and realise he nearly won it. That made me reconsider his ability, so finding out he has four rallycross titles doesn't really surprise me. From from I understand, it wasn't his ability behind the wheel that was the problem at Toro Rosso, it was all the other stuff that differentiates an F1 driver from a pro racing driver. Gerhard Berger's on the record as saying: "Scott Speed should never have been in Formula 1. It was a completely wrong decision to put this guy in F1. To be fair, he can be quick - but he doesn’t have the commitment, he doesn’t have the skills. Franz [Tost] and myself saw it quite soon, but internally we had to fight quite a while to make people understand."
Not to mention his medical issues.
Unfortunately he was a terrible NASCAR driver.
Spinantonio Liuzzi living up to the Italian s🅱️inalla tradition is probably the highlight of this video.
5:21, i think its kinda funny how AJ Allmendinger ended up racing for Red Bull in NASCAR even after all of this.
AJ was a red bull endorsed driver through his whole champ car career already.
InvisibleTeeth so even before he was selected by the Red Bull USA program?
@@atarz9571 he wasn't selected cuz he left the competition. He and Ryan Hunter-Reay thought the contracts were atrocious and refused to participate.
