Having lived with daily chronic pain for thirty-one years It warms my heart to see a brilliant and caring man such as yourself working in this field. One day when the MNDA windup was starting, I could actually recognize that there was NO pain in my body and I could identify the pain as being in my brain. Not in my ‘head’ or imagination but IN an area of my brain. Strange but interesting. After recognizing it as in this brain area the pain stopped accelerating.
I delivered a baby under self hypnosis. I went to a hypnotist and he made customized tapes for me. I practiced the hypnosis in the hypnotists office as well as on my own with the tapes from nearly the beginning of my pregnancy. I didn't think it was really going to work and wasn't sure that I had ever actually gotten myself into the state of hypnosis. I arrived to the hospital in a late stage of labor so I had no option of getting any pain relief. So I put myself into the hypnotic state and the medical staff treated me like I was nuts. But as I was pushing the medical staff did comment that my heart rate and blood pressure weren't changing at all. I was completely calm and relaxed. It's hard to describe but I felt everything and it felt good. The only thing that bothered me was that I didn't get to the hospital in time to have an enema before delivery. I felt like the delivery went very fast because I was able to relax instead of tensing up from the pain. That was my third childbirth. During my 4th childbirth I wasn't bothered by pain but I ended up having a c-section due to a complication. I also used self hypnosis on my third bout of kidney stones instead of going to the hospital for pain relief. It worked great. I don't understand how hypnosis works but I know it works for me.
Really appreciate you for sharing these kind of knowledge to the general public. This is how collective consciousness develops. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work.
For those of you who are unaware there is a British comnedien called Spike Milligan who suffered from mental illnes whose gravestone says "see I told you I was ill".
Regarding the different languages and brain lateralization question, there is evidence that Chinese which is a more pictorial language than western ones involves more right hemisphere activation; seeTzeng et al, 1979.
On HUMANIZED mice I would like protection from the medical community that operates to advocate for my interests in not being harmed so that would operate along with the hippocratic oath
If you think about something "sexy," the body has quite the reaction, and yet people still believe there is no mind-body connection. Or does that get downplayed because "sex is for survival!" (as if the REST of life is not).
As a great health reformer and prolific writer of the 1800’s noted but was not mentioned here : I would do a foolish thing to place my mind under the influence of another finite human. @@rexremedy1733 I would think there is a fine line. I firmly believe I can offer and refer to therapies which are less obscure and of better intuitive sense
Okay, I did what I normally do when I can't fall asleep right away - I listen to lectures, usually Sapolky's but I've been through them numerous times so this time I played this presentation. Erm... I had so many nightmares because I was asleep, yet my brain was processing in a dream what he talked about cancer and death preparation 😂 eventually I woke up quite unsettled and switched it off. Yeah, next time something more positive.
I found this very interesting, I have CLL and have noticed something wrong for several months now and could not put a name to it, It seems I now have that name "depression" I feel the same tiredness and lackadaisical attitude of years ago. Guess it's time to go back to my Oncologist. Dr. Spiegel you do an outstanding job with the presentation.
Look into Parts therapy. Try it -- genuinely -- before you judge it (or anything. BONUS: that "defensive" voice that you can observe that shouts things like "that sounds DUMB! That can't be!" is merely a Part. That one that says bad things about YOU is a Part. Have fun!).
NO MUSIC??? WTF?? You do not combine music in your therapy, and even aromas for distraction from pain or discomfort??? Even colors and pictures of choice help. Guys wake up and combine all technologies, even chatting on the net may help some while in physical therapy. Lots more than can be discussed. BUT my point is comfort combination therapy could be much more effective with the hypnosis treatments. Others include: Meditation, chanting, playing a rhythm, smelling a favorite flower, playing bridge to your favrite hobby latest magazine.

Excellent talk, brilliant speaker, humour mixed with empathy.
Incredibly interesting, especially the role of hypnosis in altering perception, thank you for posting!
Brain discussion starts at 38 mins or so, thank you for posting this,
oh hell nah i fell asleep and woke up to this and thought this was a film and watched an hour of it
I feel better from listening to this.
I have always found the idea that the mind and body exist separately extremely odd.
you cannot truly trust any input you brain gives you...your ambulance, however, is not subject to your whims:)
the idea that the mind and body are separate is an even-numbered idea; not odd at all.

Very true! I do believe there is benefit in benign hypnosis where the patient can change his state of mind. But not in controlled hypnosis.

Thank you.
William James speaks of auto-suggestion as an impediment to hypnosis.
Thank u so much!!!
Hypnosis is passive placebo effect enacted by the doc, so it's being effective to some degree makes sense.
You've clearly not had it before, or had a good practitioner. Odd how those who never do the thing have the loudest mouths speaking against it.
I learned how to surf while watching this. 👀

I think promoting spirituality achieve the results. Death is inevitable spirituality prepares lifestyle which prepares oneself for inevitable.
Yes. But the body will always Rebell in face of death. There is no other preparation than facing death head on.
