Just work at one thing at a time. Start with grenades, hold back press B to do an upward toss. B then Forward throws it further and faster.
Holding B allows you to burn up time, then you can release it giving your opponent less time to react. It allows hinders your opponent from attacking you while holding it.
Dropping it (B then shield) and picking it up treats grenades as items. You can throw them even further and faster than normal and you can use the C stick in any direction to throw it like that in any direction fast.
Lastly you can pick it up as an item and then hold shield and you won't take damage but anybody close trying to attack you will either calm down, take damage, or might be able to hurt you before they get hit but you're in a good position most times.
