What I always loved about the VUX song was how the diminished beat made your encounters with them feel so claustrophobic. Like they're already limpeting your ship and encroaching in your space.
the vux ships are really good unless you are fighting a long ranged ship. If you're fighting, say, an umgah, then you're going to win because they can't get close to you without being bombarded with those little snot thingies, and if you can get enough of them on any ship it's bye-bye umgah. But if you're fighting a spathi or a druuge, you're totally screwed.
@MazzaTheFirst The real problem is that the "automatically starting close" thing didn't seem to be the case in single-player, making the VUX appear rather feckless. I didn't notice it happening more often than with other ships, anyway. Even if it did, if your opponent manages to react quickly enough to avoid the initial attack, you're screwed unless you can force them into making a (pretty big) mistake. Their armament is pretty nice, but they just don't get many chances to use it.
Yeah but that's why they're considered a strategic option. Every time a VUX enters its first instance of combat, it is placed close and directly behind the enemy. After that it's at a great disadvantage being slow as heck and all
I didn't appreciate this as much back when I first played this game, or even over the years of replaying it. But recently I've been listening to this track multiple times a day. I think it's one of my favorite alien themes, up there with the Melnorme. I think they could stand to ease up on the cymbals a bit, though.
@ternanter One of his better beats... :) The chords are courtesy of the .mod sample pitch transposition. :) But they do just sound ominous. He's a great artist, I wonder what's he up to these days...
Their ships weren’t all that strong in a battle... as long as you didn’t get close because of their special weapon. Once those little pink “leeches” touched any of your ships, they slowed down, and permanently.
Yeah, they suck in single-player, and it's because one of their abilities is broken. They're supposed to start closer to the enemy ship, but that ability doesn't work in the campaign. They're easy resources unless you screw up big-time.
I disagree but respect your viewpoint. Personally I think both fit. The VUX's theme is fitting imo because it really embodies the overtly hostile, "I detest you immensely and am only being polite as a formality" feeling of interactions with them, whereas the Ilwrath's theme compliments the despicable, self-aware evil the species is so known for engaging in.
This whole line of dialog taught me the meaning of subjective aesthetics. Seriously this game is profoundly educational.
And paraphilia. Don't forget paraphilia!

They warp in way too close and spam limpets. If their ships were more maneuverable they'd be unstoppable.

I've found earthling cruisers are really powerful against them. Just don't get any limpet nodes stuck in it or you're doomed.
