I remember this call like it was yesterday. I was a senior in high school in high school and have always been a diehard NASCAR fan. Like others have said, this call helped NASCAR to become the sport that it became in the 80s and early 90s. Rest in peace to one of the greatest broadcasters of my favorite sport.

TL;DR : Nascar, have harsher penalties and your ratings will go up, not down.
Yeah great job Nascar 👏 I get that it’s the 70’s but that doesn’t mean standards back then didn’t make sence. Yarborough or whoever was the one hitting the other driver with his helmet, I can’t believe he never got banned (might of gotten a small suspension and fine but thats really not enough). I’m glad I wasn’t born back then because I would be livid. Drivers still throw fists at each other on pitroad and look now, it gives you a maximum of a what? 3-4 race suspension? But if you have an illegal part (I know gray territory) on your car, your crew chief gets suspended 4 races? And a loose wheel? Look I get both these acts are not fair and dangerous but it’s nothing compared to being thrown punches with a helmet and basically doing nothing about it.
I haye to be one of those “annoying fake fans” but ever since I started watching Nascar in 2001, I’ve seen so many physical fights its insane. Yes the officials (sometimes) try to intervene, but if you would give deserving harsher penalties it would happen a lot less.

@@bert1981 ever heard the saying never judge a book by its cover? 1 dipstick move doesnt make you a bad driver. Everyone F’s up every now and then. 3 titles in a row? Thats what legends are made of. Granted this move was definitely in character for cale Yarborough, he wasnt called old hickory for nothing.
