The picture frame mount on the back was a surprise

That gasket you never put on around the 13:30 mark is not for holding the screen, its for stopping dust getting in from the back.

Yeah, that occurred to me as soon as I reassembled it. Ah well, I kept it so no doubt one day I will need to get back in there once dust gets in

13:20: I thought I didn't need this, but actually, it is to prevent dust from getting between the screen and the lens. Stick one side to the shell, but don't attach the other side to the screen. Don't peel off the protection; otherwise, it will damage the screen when you need to remove it.

I need to get one of these. I have an old original Gameboy with a bad LCD.

Great video. I like to play original GameBoy games on my Super Famicom using a Super GameBoy.

I almost forgot I had a Nintendo Gameboy that needs repair. One of the original grey units although it has suffered some yellowing and battery corrosion. Not sure what is wrong with it exactly, but I'm guessing battery leakage is to blame. Thanks to this video now I also have some ideas for upgrades, thanks! I just need to get some cartridges to test on it.

The device might be feeding the new LCD more current than it actually needs.

That's not quite how that works. The device will only draw as much current as it needs, I could allow 100A and it would still only draw a few hundred mA

I sold my boxed with manuals Gameboy about 10 years ago (🤦), but when I was testing it out I was like "How could I even play this thing?" since the screen was so hard to see. I bought another Gameboy a few years ago (unboxed, no manuals and dodgy screen) for only a few dollars more than I sold my complete boxed one (🤦) and did a screen mod. Think it was the same one Jan Beta did. I didn't have to trim the screen though IIRC.

My recommended games: Super Mario Land, Metroid II, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Donkey Kong Land, Dr. Mario, Mega Man, Mega Man III, Mega Man V (super expensive though so unless you already have it you might just need to "add" it to your Everdrive), Elevator Action, Alleyway (Arkanoid clone).
Of note: Black shell Game Boy Color cartridges will also work in an OG Game Boy, but clear shell ones won't. Another way to tell is Color-only games have a convex "Nintendo Game Boy" logo at the top, the rest are concave. They will obviously only play in monochrome, but they will work.

Just finished this same thing myself. Fyi the ips ready shell that i got does indeed have the gameboy logo under the screen. I ordered the "original" color scheme

If you've played it much, how long does 4 modern (rechargeable) batteries last? I've done mods to my GBA and GBC and while they obviously don't last as long as with the original screen, it's enough to get maybe 7-9 hours of a Pokemon game from full charge. Those two only need 2 AAs though, DMG needing 4 makes me wonder.

I've only played for about 4 or 5 hours so I'm not sure yet. Based on my measurements, 4x 2450mAh eneloops *should* last around 13 hours at full brightness and close to 20 at min brightness

Played Pokémon Blue way too much as a kiddo. Some other fun games are Donkey Kong land 2 and Zelda: Link's awakening :)
