- Built an electric beach cart out of a gorilla cart and a kids Razor Dirt Quad ATV
Update - do not take the brake assembly off the rear axle. There is a key under it that holds the axle in place stopping it from shifting left. I took the cable off but reinstalled the brake assembly.

Awesome idea with the razor quad set up. I looked at the weight capacity of the quad at 120 pounds. I’d love to know how that motor and set up work with the wagon weight and under load. Can’t wait to see it in action.
The weight capacity is basically the kid riding on it in its stock configuration. When I changed the sprockets it definitely increased its capacity as it is geared way way lower. It’s now a 4 to one gear ratio. I’ve been riding it around like a freak in my yard up and down hills and I’m over 200 lbs. At the end of the day if my wife loads this thing up with more than 200 pounds we shouldn’t be going to the beach in the first place. Will test all this in a week and let everyone know how it goes.
Cool idea. But so heavy!!! Gonna be hard to unload alone !! Maybe buy one of the aluminum carts with balloon tires and convert !
It’s less than 100 pounds total. For the money and durability it works for me. Plus I didn’t want to get into trying to weld aluminum

Awesome build! I have a 90 foot hill to climb to get to the beach that is pretty steep. Would you stick with the 36 tooth socket or see if electricscooter parts could make something a bit bigger for additional torque (at the expense of speed)?
I think the 9 tooth to 36 tooth will be perfect. I rode mine up a pretty long hill a lot longer than that and it was fully loaded :). You can see me at the end of the second video doing it. If it’s a huge sand dune you will definitely need to pull it or get wider wheels.

@@johnbonzey Sounds great - thanks for the follow-up! I saw you go up that hill - my hill is 90 vertical feet to climb, length is probably 1/8 of a mile or so. Sounds like the 36 tooth sprocket is still the ticket though. Thanks again
@@CarCareKioskthe hill I was climbing was at least that long so you’ll be good. May want to get a couple bigger batteries since the ones that come with the cart are pretty small but who knows maybe they’ll work
Nice build. Have you tried this in the soft sand? I've been working on mine for a couple of years and still can't get it over the dune. Next step is a geared motor and bigger tires.
I won’t have it in the soft sand until August. I believe the big dune will be an issue unless I go down the path of buying $100 wheelezz tires but we will see.
I have the same issue with the one I built. That soft sand going up the dune gets me every time. I even got wheeleez and still have the issue almost not aggressive enough to actually pull the cart. What kind of tires are you running? I might try tracks if I can get a hold of some cheap.

I’m sure you can. I made a cover for mine that goes over it all but it is open on the top. I really don’t know if you should make sure it’s ventilated for heat dissipation .

I finally got a razor atv for only $75 on marketplace! Now to study your video more, thanks! *it just needs a new power switch, my garden cart is about at least size and half bigger than yours, will the razor still carry it fine with a load of driftwood on it? Thanks for all your help

Nice build! Did you wire both ignition wires to the black wire on the thumb throttle cable?
I honestly can’t remember what wires I connected to the thumb throttle but I only cut one of them and ran it through the ignition. If I had to do it again I’d prob not even use the key and just unplug the quick connect at the battery connecting the + and - It works but I don’t even use the key anymore.

Just look for a razor dirt quad on marketplace or Craigslist. You’ll see the wheels will look the same as on my cart
Is there a way to add a reverse switch or does razor ATV motor not allow that? Would be a nice added feature for maneuvering. Great build though. I’m working on getting my components together not for next year.
A reverse switch can be added from what I’ve read. You’ll have to Google it. I never added it and even after running this for a while still don’t personally see a need for it but clearly up to you.
Yes you can add a reverse switch to the beach cart. It comes in handy if you have a tight garage or shed and need to back out of it. I made a forward/reverse switch for my beach cart that was created from a razor dirt quad ATV. I will post a video on youtube showing it off and how to create the switch soon!

I have a beach wagon that I’ve modified myself with oversized tires but I’m headed to pick up a razor as we speak, do you foresee I will have an issue putting my larger tires on that setup?
You will have to modify the rear axle setup for sure

Hey John, how much weight would you say you hauled with it? Im building a cart now that will weight around 250 pounds with everything. Im thinking of jumping up to a 40 tooth on the bigger gear (instead of a 36) and 9 on the smaller gear which would give more torque. They are saying around 2.5 MPH
Prob about 50 pounds. But I sit in it and and go up a the hill and I’m at 220 plus the contents with no issue on a 36 tooth to 9 tooth drive
If the battery dies, will it free wheel to be able to pull it back?
You will need to remove the master link on the chain. It will move but you will not be able to pull it for long without being exhausted :)
My wheels from the atv have a smaller diameter hole than the wagon front axle. Did you run into this issue? I can’t get the atv wheels on the wagon front axle. Thanks.
It’s been a while but pretty sure they fit on mine. If this is the case I would just ust drill out the atv rim to fit the wagon axle

Nice build! I have been thinking about for awhile how to build one. Can’t decide whether to buy a cart or build one from scratch. I have a welder(but I’m not a welder) always wanted to learn though so that’s why I bought one. But I really like your setup. Having 2 kids means bringing a lot more stuff out onto the beach. Do you think it would be cheaper to just buy the parts I would only need rather than buying the whole rzr dirt quad? Or would you suggest just buy it whole and possibly be able to use other parts? Very good job sir!!! Makes me excited about building one. My wife almost always says why don’t you just buy something instead of build it…..my response to her is you get the satisfaction of building it yourself and also gain knowledge of what your building! When you said rzr quad setup is it an actual atv? Or dirt bike? Or rzr? I know quad usually means atv but just wondering because my local facebook marketplace built but it’s a dirt bike. Do you think the Wheeleez tires are worth it? Never used them before but considering trying them then I think about atv paddle tires for sand and wonder which I should try first.
Thanks. It will be WAY cheaper to build yourself. I'm not a welder either as i bought one last year. This is definitely a good project to do yourself. It will take time for sure but as long as you can cut metal, grind, wire stuff up its pretty easy. The welding you will figure out :). The first thing you want to do is search on marketplace "Razor dirt quad electric". Find one for under $300 bucks - you may need to be patient but they show up. i wouldn't buy a new one for sure. The razor dirt quad has just about everything you need - motor, frame, wheels etc. I put the detailed parts list for everything required under the description. I was too cheap to buy the wheeleez but if you don't want to pull at all this would prob be the way to go - at $100 a piece i was thinking the project was getting out of control :) All in I was prob at about $500ish complete. I had just remembered about your beach wagon build a few days ago still haven’t built one but really want to. Do you think the wheeleez wheels will be much better in the sand? I saw in one of your comments to me if you don’t want to pull the wheeleez wheels would probably be better. I never have used them but do you think the Wheeleez wheels will make it so I’m barely pulling the wagon?
Does that cart have reverse
I didn’t wire it up for reverse. Honestly I can’t remember if these motors on the dirt quads can be wired for reverse. Normally the polarity is reversed on the motors through a switch to get the motor to run backwards. Never saw the need for it personally.
Ok, the stock wheels suck, buy the Bonlo wheels or you will be pulling through soft sand. Next, make sure the batteries you get are at least 18 amp hour. The stock batteries are only 8 amp hour and last only 10 to 15 minutes depending on the flatness of the sand. I did have to mod the back axle so the wheels would be powered since the Bonlo wheels are free rolling. I also put a 3 way switch on the handle so I have reverse.
The bonnlo wheels have some pretty bad reviews so I’d be interested how they work out for you. Like I said in deep sand with the dirt quad tires you’ll have to help it but it was a non issue for me.

I’d sell the one i showed for $1500 , it’s a lot of work. I’d include the bigger batteries. You’d have to pick it up as it can’t be shipped. In Massachusetts
