This 90s Cartoon Network Pilot DISTURBED Twitter!

  • During this Summer, Adult Swim's Cartoon Network nostalgia block-within-a-block, Checkered Past, added the biggest deep cut to their schedule since "Evil Con Carne": Fred Seibert's revolutionary pilot program, "The What a Cartoon! Show". But one of the quote tweets responding to the announcement brought some unusually heated attention to one particular short: "Buy One, Get One Free". Created by Charlie Bean, Don Shank, and Carey Yost, this pilot is basically a Games Animation-era episode of "The Ren & Stimpy Show" that somehow snuck its way onto Cartoon Network.
    In this editorial, I'm not only giving my own thoughts on "Buy One, Get One Free", but I'm also responding to the unnecessary Twitter flame war between those who find the short (or at least the climax) too "uncomfortable" and "mean-spirited", and those who think people are being sensitive Zoomers. Which side am I on? Watch and find out!
    The quote tweet from Jeffrey that started the debate:

    Should have said this earlier, but I noticed I made a slight factual error at 8:55. Rough Draft Korea actually animated another short during the original 48 "What a Cartoon!" episode order: "The Zoonatiks in Home Sweet Home". So "Buy One, Get One Free" wasn't the only one. Sorry folks.

    I honestly believe that most people on Twitter lie about being offended or disturbed by things. They do so for engagement or to just complain. Half of the people complaining are millennials who grew up with similar shows, but act like they didn’t.

      Yeah, Twitter, like I mentioned, loves making mountains out of Atom Ant hills by posting ragebait. I remember a couple of weeks ago, two of AniMat's older reviews of the "Hotel Transylvania" sequels (back when he had a strong hate for Sony Pictures Animation), was trending on the site, despite him apologizing and toning down such behaviour since 2018. I know the internet is like an elephant, in that it never forgets, but that just felt like a "grasping at straws" moment.

      Yeah. "I disagree with this," has become "I'm offended," and "I'm disturbed" is a more click-baity way to say "This makes me a little uncomfortable."

    I don't know why the entirety of Gen-Z is gettng thrown under the bus for this, instead of weird Twitter users themselves being held fully accountable. I grew up with a mix of both mean spirited and wholesome cartoons as an '02 baby. I'm sure other Gen-Zs can relate to this.
    We had the Total Drama franchise, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Invader Zim, and the Fairly Oddparents just to name a few. Not to mention a lot of us grew up watching adult swim, also re-runs exist. 90s kids have way too much of a main character complex.

    I remember seeing the short as a kid in the 90's and, yeah, the guy abusing his cat was uncomfortable to watch. But that was the point, wasn't it? You're not supposed to like the guy or support what he's doing and you're supposed to enjoy seeing him face the consequences of being an asshole. There's nothing wrong with media that makes you feel uncomfortable. Art is meant to invoke the entire range of human emotion, not just the ones that are pleasant to experience.

    I think both sides really need to chill the F out. Not all cartoons need to follow the same rules as other shows. Just as some cartoons are intended to be more wholesome and story-driven, others should be allowed to be insane and demented as well. They may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that’s just how the world works - if you don’t like either one, leave it be and just watch what you prefer. 🐱
    Personally, I’m pretty much in the middle. There’s plenty of more wholesome modern shows that I like (“Steven Universe” included) and plenty of cynical shows that I enjoy (like “The Simpsons”).

    My main criticism about "Buy One Get One Free", the cat doesn't do much except get pushed around by everyone and the penthouse guy is a one-note psycho crafted to make his demise cathartic. It feels more like an excuse for ex-R&S artists to exercise their deranged mental breakdown skills. Still a great, highly energetic breakdown to watch.

    • @william3100
      @william3100 5 месяцев назад +11

      What's wrong with him being a "one note" psycho? Unrealistic people are in fictional shows all the time. Plus, he gets it at the end. So, it's not like he gets away with it. Plus, I can imagine some penthouse people are pretty crazy like what anyone can be.
      Edit: I just got done actually watching it, and it's not bad whatsoever!! First off, the cat doesn't just get pushed around, he and the other cat get to enjoy laying down and being petted by the lady at the end, and gets SOME joy from the music at the party the other cat threw.
      Second, the penthouse guy was a shallow rich guy who bought the cat purely to mingle with the lady. Obviously, he doesn't care about animals and would abuse one if he hated one.
      Thirdly, most things the cat gets aren't even mean-spirited! Its typical cartoon hijinxs cartoon characters get into all the time. Plus, the cat tries to prevent things from getting bad, but obviously isn't the physical and authoritative type. Lots of people are like that. Plus, it makes sense the guy would go crazy on the cat towards the end because, to him, it seemed like he trashed his penthouse even though the other cats that did trash it bailed on him.
      Finally, they don't truly emphasize how much the cat is suffering to make it feel uncomfortable and terrible, and the humane society nap the guy and even hate how he treats animals badly as well. Usually, the big brutes from a city are terrible, but these guys were actually good and were against animal cruelty. So, it's a very good subversion of those tropes!
      In short, it's a pretty good cartoon short that's not bad whatsoever, and I can't see anything to really criticize about it.

      Yeah, that's what I was saying. "Tales of Worm Paranoia" was hardly brought up during this debate, and yet I'd argue that it's much more disturbing than "Buy One, Get More Free", since the premise is about a worm wanting to kill the man who kept stepping on him.

  • @cyanity1017
    @cyanity1017 5 месяцев назад +12

    Honestly while the scene that everyone talked about Definitely made me uncomfortable, i think it's actually not that bad because the dude abusing his cat gets punished for abusing his cat afterwards. It would be one thing if it was this mean spirited just for comedy and didn't acknowledge the animal abuse but i think it's actually funny how he gets attacked for it afterwards.
    I don't have a problem with meanspirited cartoons considering i did grow up watching a few like that like the original fairly oddparents and looney toons reruns on boomerang, but i do understand why people were uncomfortable about the scene considering yeah it does kinda feel a bit too real since it's animal abuse.

    I mean, yeah that moment was uncomfortable but it’s meant to. But here’s the thing- the dude gets punished and humiliated and not only that he is once again “maidenless”
    So many people can’t handle uncomfortable or disturbing content because they don’t understand that that’s the point. You’re not meant to enjoy what’s going on, it’s supposed to shock you. That just means the writer executed what they set out to do. This is like the weirdo who goes to watch a horror movie and becomes upset that it’s scary and disturbing.

And I can't stand this new argument they have. This is why so much of modern entertainment is so bland. There's more to modern humor than what literally meets the eye. This is stuff made by adults, it's time to stop being a 90s Nickelodeon kid and join them.

    Great video
    Personally when it comes to cartoons (I'm throwing a curveball here)
    I'm more into creativity with interesting characters
    Mean spirited humor doesn't really bug me Granted there are times where it is poorly executed (I mean alot of 80s cartoons suffered this issue but again again, the 80s is extremely hit or miss when it comes to cartoons)
    But overall they don't really bug me since for the most part there is context to it
    Shows like south park, my gym partners a monkey, rick and morty etc has alot of mean spirited moments but they used it for context
    Honestly, I never saw today's cartoons as cuddley shows like amphibia, kiff, etc has their own moments that showcased that we've moved passed from the care bears
    I'm weird when it comes to cartoons
    I havnt seen this what a cartoon short yet but I will eventually

    • @tjh6678

      Agreed.
      I'm gen Z (2000 baby specifically), & I had plenty of room in my heart for various kinds of cartoons with different goals/vibes growing up.
      I got a kick out of series like Winnie the Pooh just as much as I did with anarchic comedies like Looney Tunes or Ed, Edd n Eddy, or the shows that were somewhere inbetween like SpongeBob, Futurama & Wander Over Yonder.
      Can some of these twitter users be oversensitive? Sure, but they're still entitled to their feelings. I love shows like Ren & Stimpy, but I can acknowledge that they're not for everyone. Just kno what you're getting into & don't have a melodramatic meltdown if it makes you uneasy. Cartoons with an unhinged/mean side have their place, & in some cases, were just a product of their time.
      That said, I'm also not a fan of all the people who rageout & mock those that don't vibe with certain kinds of cartoons, while writing off all modern animation as toothless fluff. Shows like Gumball & Paul Rudish Mickey Mouse are right there for those partial to slapstick & well-written comedic cynicism.
      Molly McGee is probably the most recent example of a great "in-between" show, & it had a very funny snow day episode where the MC has a mental breakdown over the course of a comedic song (something that we could indeed use more of).
      And beyond that, let's not pretend the likes of Steven U or Amphibia don't have their dark moments.
      Even with my preference for more humorous shows, a good cartoon is a good cartoon, whether it's goin for offbeat edge or kind/laidback vibes, no matter if it's episodic or story-driven.
      Like the man said, It all comes down to execution & how much you like or are entertained by the characters.
      And as for my stance on the discourse? Regardless of what side you're on, be RESPECTFUL to others, atleast within reason. Keep it civil & don't be so quick to belittle others with different tastes, ESPECIALLY over an old cartoon short that's just OK. 🐱
      ~ And please pardon the essay, I just had alot of thoughts while typing this, lol.

      Yeah, the original "Ren & Stimpy" and "Adult Party Cartoon" are two different beasts, so the only people who would get the two mixed up are those who make clickbait-y videos/articles about "dirty jokes" in 90s kids cartoons, and they use that scene of Ren "sawing" the log sitting on Stimpy's butt from the "APC" episode "Altruists".
      From what I heard about the leaked Comedy Central reboot (which I'm trying to avoid until it's officially released in North America), the 2024 series is somewhere in the middle (though some say it's even worse, or at least blander, than "APC").

    If you want to see a genuinely mean spirited cartoon, I’d say watch Family Dog. At least the penthouse guy got his comeuppance and the cats got to relax by the end, in Family Dog the family’s all assholes and the poor dog barely even gets to have his day. Absolutely insane to think the show was partially created by Brad Bird, I like dark comedy and slapstick but Family Dog just seriously lacks any heart in spite of its outstanding animation quality.

    • @NoParkingBerry
      @NoParkingBerry  4 месяца назад +2

      I love how you brought up "Family Dog", because the reason why I briefly mentioned it in my video was because Brad Bird couldn't see the original "Amazing Stories" episode be expanded into a full series. Yet CBS greenlit it anyway in order to compete with "The Simpsons", and the results were not too kind. I haven't seen a lot of the half-hour series of "Family Dog" (it was okay from what I saw), but I consider the original 1987 short to be one of TV animation's earliest masterpieces that kickstarted the late '80s/90s renaissance, thanks largely to the theatrical-level animation done by Brad Bird's fellow CalArts pals.

    im on side c. people are entitled to having their own impressions, sure, i wish they were more open minded, but i can see why someone would be weirded out, specially if the clip is out of context or they dont have all the info on who made it. at the same time, theres nothing that disturbing about the short?? and i like weird art, i like art that pushes the boundaries of what art is seen as supposed to look like, i like stuff that isnt easily marketable. so seeing it i totally feel that it was a fun short with zany humor and designs like any other, and its very very mean to say stuff like this about someones art style, regardless of what it is and who made it.
    i think people need to be comfortable with the fact that bad people will sometimes be wicked talented. john k is an unfortunate example here. no, his work isnt retroactively awful now because he is an awful person, he just is an awful person who ended up making something good (or at least, thought of as good by many, even if it isnt your cup of tea). he wasnt a lone genius either, and thats another myth that needs to be shut down. many people work on a cartoon in order to get it going, so his work wasnt even his alone for anyone to go on and write it off entirely as bad art. furthermore, as an artist with several more artist friends, i think a lot about how artists who go for similarly zany styles feel when they see people call this type of art disgusting and uncomfortable. sure, part of that is intentional, but it still has to hurt to be trying hard to make something with passion only to be told that people think your art just sucks.
    in conclusion... i cant see myself on either side, because side a is being, ironically, mean spirited about someones work of art that has a lot of heart and humor put into it and side b while more accepting of the short is saying some very out of pocket things about side a, instead of focusing on any objective arguments. you dont have to like the short, but you cant deny its well put together, and you must have respect for art. but also if you write out legit concerns over supporting a creep and even JOKE about assault itself? youre awful too, and i want nothing to do with you.😺
