    I didnt slow my bearded dragons feeding early enough aswell. She isnt as "obese" now after 8 months of veggies every day and 5-8 crickets/roaches every 3 days. May pick it up to 5 crickets/roaches every other day. Her beard got wide and thick though, and big tail, very pretty. Your monitor is on another level of beautiful, great channel.

    little tip to help save on feeding costs and add a variety to their diet...asian markets....i would get (in canada) qual eggs 18 for 3.99 , fresh water snails 24 for 5.99 and frogs legs 4 sets for 4.99 ( with the frogs legs i would break the bones up as they were long to ensure ease of digestion) on top i would have inverts, roaches, mealworms, hornworms, crickets, etc, mice and occasionally bacon and eggs in the morning with me lol. i found by going to the market i could diversify their diet more ..in the wild they would eat..frogs, eggs and snails...most pet stores dont carry these.

      I've had another person swear by these markets. I still have to make it to one, but I will be getting to one soon!

    How frequent you need to feed them? Mine already at 30cm length and i feel he's already too fat because i feed him every 2 days

    • @hillbilly_herpetology
      @hillbilly_herpetology  Год назад

      At 30 cm if already overweight I'd go down to 1 feeding a week of egg whites with vitamin and calcium supplements and every other week feeding with the yolk in the egg
      This should let him get nutrients to still grow without getting a lot of calories or extra fat. This is what I did with my fat guy and in 3 months he trimmed down

    Speaking of size, what size enclosure do you have? I ask because my sav is only 8 months old, had him since a hatchling and he is way bigger than this while being significantly less obese. I feed 90-95% varied insects and a multi tiered bask that goes up to 130°

    • @hillbilly_herpetology
      @hillbilly_herpetology  Год назад +1

      My enclosure, as seen in my other videos is 8 ft by 4 ft by 4 ft. I can fit inside it and regularly do. Also, if yours is longer than mine congratulations you have one of the rare giant savs occasionally seen. As far as obesity goes, he was a bit bigger than I'd like him but certainly not obese. I have not pushed for size but health with these guys. I'm happy with them. Diapause is almost over and breeding is about to begin stay tuned

      @@hillbilly_herpetology yeah I didn't mean to imply that he is super overweight, most that I see are much worse. My male still has the skinny look he did as a hatchling despite his size. My first concern was also keeping a healthy non fatty animal, i did my research and learned about the major issues in captivity, but with his seemingly absurd growth rate, stunting has run a close second of my concerns. Currently building his 8×6 adult enclosure

      @hillbilly_herpetology  Год назад +1

      FYI, both our groups of savs do not utilize the whole enclosure. And yes it is heated ECT correctly. For this reason I think 8 by 4 is bigger than I need. In the future I'd make mine smaller. I'd do 6 by 4 by 4 if I built another one.

    • @ChronusFatherofAll
      @ChronusFatherofAll Год назад +1

      @@hillbilly_herpetology yeah I only decided to go so big because as I've compared him to other captive savs, hes growing significantly faster and larger and It seems more people take the opposite approach, there are people in some of my social media groups with 1 year old+ Savs in a literal 40 gallon breeding tank wondering why they're not seeing growth and when they can expect to.. I do have a question for a more experienced Sav keeper such as yourself though, is there an age or time frame where youve noticed the growth rate slowing/tapering off?

    • @hillbilly_herpetology
      @hillbilly_herpetology  Год назад +1

      I did notice at 9 ish months growth slowed way down, but so did my feeding. I have a theory that if I used egg whites , calcium with D3 and vitamins that I would have seen better growth in mine as I would have been still introducing protein and supplements more regularly. At the end of the day I'm happy with the size they are. A Smaller (of still healthy) animal means less enclosure size indeed. Probably a smart move to make yours larger. If he gets to that mythical 5 ft size you will be happy you did. I will also say that they spend most time up off the ground so if I were to consider increasing size of anything in my enclosure, I'd make it taller. Plus it would be nice to stand in it like I can with my water monitor.
