I didn’t think I would need an 85 AND a 70-200 but they really do compliment each other. I use the 85 more for portraits but having that reach with the 70-200 is really helpful sometimes, especially for video
I bought this lense mainly because I was looking for a cheap way to pull in long shots on my FS7 MKII. Initially I thought I had made a mistake and was quickly thinking of listing it on Trademe or eBay, but after a few shoots with it I think its a pretty good buy. Maybe not as fast as other lenses and a bit of a fiddle to find focus in a hurry on manual, but its pretty sharp and gives a pleasing image. Great video review Peter !
In regards to your question about fast autofocus, both the lens and the body you're using matter. Lenses have motors inside to move all that glass and some motors can be slower/louder than others. However, if the body you're using has a great autofocus system it can improve the functionality of any lens. Hope this helps
very well produced video. good information, to the point, valid info backing all statements. kinda wish this lens existed before i bought the 70-200GM... too expensive, but I'm glad I have it when I need it. having a 2.8 Aperture at 200mm is realy nice (for the three times I've ever needed that). The lens that stays mounted my my A7Rii is the 24-70 2.8GM. and I use a Batis 18 when I need to go really wide. Aloha
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, the GM is too expensive for the extra stop of light. I can imagine, 24-70 is an incredibly good Focal Range! Thank you so much for watching!
I’m getting this lens in a few days. For me it is the best option because for travel and hiking the GM is just to damn big and heavy. I’ll let the ISO performance of the a7iii cover the f4. I pairing this with the Tamron 24-70? and the 16-35 Ziess to start my full frame kit.
Thanks a bunch, for a long time being on budget and have been planning on investing in 2.8 lenses, not only I can not afford any of them yet but also this has been stopping me to go out shooting on my current kit lens, anyways I changed my mind to go for f4 lenses and this video was very helpful.
As always, good stuff! Ended up going with the 2.8 version because we film a lot in low light, and at different distances, so the 2.8 throughout the zoom range for additional low light work was no brainer for us. We have ended up with a 14-24 f/2.8 Sigma, a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, and the Sony 70-200 f/2.8 for all video work on the Sony A7iii and either the new A7IV or the A7SIII if and when they are ever released.
Wow! Started following you a few days ago and decided to start from your first video and catch up. Your videos have come a very long way!! lol The lighting in this video looks bad compared to the later videos you have. You’re amazing and humble, thank you for all you do for us!! 🙏🏽💪🏽

Yeah, not worth it on a crop sensor. I would go for something like the tamron 28-75 even though the focal lengths might be odd, but it's a fantastic lens that basically is a macro lens too! Thanks for watching!
Haha! As I said, it isn't a must have lens but it is damn good to have in your kit when you need it. Awesome that you're keeping it. Thanks for watching!

Hello from Kyiv Ukraine. I am interested in the 70 to 200 because I shoot portraits and fashion models but I would much like the 2.8. I have stopped myself from buying either Sony lenses because Tamron has registered a patent for this focal length specifically for Sony FE at F2.8. When this will be available I do not know but there is a chance now that the 17 to 28 is available that it could be middle to late 2020. Therefore I wait to see that lens first before I decide because I would want the faster lens without paying stupid money for the Sony GM. I have just ordered the 17 to 28 by the way. You must do a review on this lens.
Why no rubber gasget.... it is not the most expensive part of a lens.... nice review... i now still use my Tamron 2.8 VC with Canon mount, which works very nice woth the metabones v but i was looking into getting this f4 this year... rubber ring is the only thing that makes me reconsider (amd price) maybe Tamron comes with a good one (like the 28-75) that would be the best!
I don't know, i'd really want to have the weather sealing there... Thank you, glad you liked the vid! I think its more worth to wait until Tamron releases their Native 70-200, it's gonna be a real badass lens i think! Thanks for watching!
Tamron is slow playing it. I (we) have been waiting. In my opinion it should have released by now. The f4 is probably still the best bet in the used market.
Hey. I have a question. I want to buy a sony a7 iii, which lens i should buy with it for video use, the distance 1m -1,5 to 2m from the object, i want to use it as microscope, with zooming all the way and having details. Thank you so much
Cool vid:) tried this lens today on my a6000 and was very impressed however there was a delay while pressing the Shutter? Not sure what that was about.
This is a great lens that captures sharp pictures. However, I would not buy this lens again as there is no teleconverters option compared to the other 2.8 70-200 mm version. It seems that they did this on purpose so that others would buy the costlier 2.8 option. Seriously look at other lenses as 200 mm is only a moderate zoom capability without options to easily increase your range. Due to this limiting factor, this lens will probably sit in your bag more than it should. You should find other solutions with increased range and/or the ability add teleconverters or you will be forced to buy and carry additional lenses/weight.
The only reason why I’m not getting it today is because of the rumor about a possible tamron 70-200... 🤷🏻♂️. I will need ot for next summer so will wait 3 or 4 month more 🙂
