Dunno about markers because I rarely use any, but in gouache you can definitely tell the difference between cheap and expensive (aka designer/studio gouache), which is only natural because gouache is made up of pure pigment and that alone is pricey as hell. Anyway, my theory is that if you're able to make it work decently with inexpensive, school grade art supplies, you'll do wonders with professional grade ones once you can afford them. So as a beginner I would hold up running straight into Windsor and Newtons (or Copics in this case) for now, because one: you'll get frustrated as to why these expensive art supplies don't magically turn into nice illustrations and two: because it'll burn a whole right through your wallet and that is tough when you're broke as hell.

As a beginner who used $18 set of 8 gouaches and was not able to achieve a decent result while making a color wheel I can say that it's important to start with good basic colors of gouache. I hated my result (uneven color, watery, shiny in some places, with patches of weird pigment) so I was totally turned off gouache. And then I decided to buy just 5 colors and try painting that color wheel again, the result surprised me that much that I wanted to give another shot to gouache. What I am trying to say that poor materials with lack of pigment won't show the beauty of this media and newbie can loose an interest seeing that he/she can't achieve a decent result even in the simplest task like painting one color on color wheel, not even saying about painting a picture.

FeyonaT There's a whole range of cheaper gouache paints with various price points. First set not working? Then buy the next one in line until you come across something that's decent enough that you can learn and affordable at the same time. That's what I did. Obviously, the cheapest one won't work. It never does. :)

I wish I knew that before buying it. Honestly speaking I bought 6 winsor&newton paints for $30 (may be slightly up) and wish I did that before because at least for that lesson I didn't need a whole pile of paint (it was a lesson at online art-school). Also there were no choice at stores that was available near me. Michaels had that cheap set of paints that I was thinking will be good enough for a person who just starts learning. And other option was the store with professional grade gouaches, nothing in between. So at the end I just wasted $18 that were spent for cheap set. I agree that it might not matter when it comes to markers since there are so many good options for alcohol markers, but when it comes to gouache it's a bit difficult to find something in between, especially if you live in rural area.

I draw mostly in colored pencil and when I started learning how to use colored pencils I used a 24-pack of the Faber Castell watercolor pencils, the cheap ones. Then in order to complete my first drawing I bought a few more pencils from a variety of different bands only looking at the colors and not at all at the brands. But after these first few pencils, I started to buy only the Faber Castell pencils because out of the brands I had already tried they were the ones I had liked the most and I continued buying only the pencils I needed for my next drawing and after I had the entire Faber Castell set I started experimenting with other brands again here and there.

Coming from a current student, if you can shell out the money, I would get certain colors in the copic forsure. Like skin tones and greys, makers that you will use always. It can be kind of expensive but the copic refill system is awesome. You can get the maker on blicks website for like $5.40 last time I checked and the refill ink for like $9, and the refill ink is the equivalent to like 8 markers. I wish I would have known this before I bought my prisma set in grey because those aren't refillable 😭😭😭

So, uh, Zoe...what marker brand do you recommend? Great video, per usual, and I agree. Brand doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things in the end. I mean, it does impact how the piece looks, but you still need the skill set first.

  • @higherground711

Very well said. ^_^ I appreciate the entire video. You made some very good points. I actually picked up a pack of the Crayola Super Tip markers seeing them on sale for $3.99. I haven't used them since I was a child. But I just wanted to mess around with them and see if I can make them do the things you did in your cheap marker video. That'll be more or less playing unless they surprise me and I can actually get any serious use out of them. They claim that the colors are much more vibrant now too. We'll see about that.
I gleened from Wikipedia that for centuries watercolors weren't taken seriously as an art medium. Most artists would use them for studies and sketches leading up to a piece done in oils, gouache etc. Watercolors are a medium for serious use now and have been for quite a while. But it wasn't always like that.
I think water based markers are going through the same phase. It depends on how one is going to use them. If the issue is them not being light fast, well if they're going in a sketchbook they'll probably be fine. If it's an illustration that will get a lot of exposure then maybe one wouldn't want to use them. On the flip side if a piece is going to photographed or scanned there wouldn't be an issue as those would be fine ways to preserve the art. Just have to know a little about scanning and photographing art. There are simple tutorials on those. It's not really the type of ink inside the marker. Quality counts for a lot. It's how one uses the markers.

I just wanted to show you some other examples I found. It seems that there's quite a variety of economy priced brush markers to choose from. But it seems to me that markers, even school grade markers, have always been a little expensive. I can't pin point why that is, but that seems to be the way it's always been with markers in general.

I like Ohuhu markers. They’re cheaper than Copics, but similar. This year they introduced dual chisel and brush tips (they previously only had chisel and bullet nib). The downsides are that they don’t sell them individually or have refill inks. Also, I’ve been told that their brush tips wear out a little more quickly than Copics, but I haven’t had a big problem with that or anything. As far as the brush markers go, they have packs of 48, 72, and 120, plus a 24 “skin tones” pack (really great for non-Caucasian people, a little orange-y for white people). Their colors are really saturated. If you want more pastel colors (and better Caucasian skin tones), you’ll need the 120 set. I haven’t tried their bullet-tipped ones, so I don’t know much about them. I have never used Copics, so I personally can’t compare them, but I love my markers. Plus, Ohuhu has great customer service.

i just care if the art supply is working for me... i dont like how the copic ink looks on paper because it has little specks/dots but they blend beautifully. the specks bother me so i use other brands like prismacolor and the promarkers. i also only care if a brand is light fast but thats just if i want to sell an artwork. great video as always!

I've been buying by copics online, the cheapest option was $3.95 after 25% discount for 1st time customers. Personally I tried chartpak in the store, but its smell was unbearable. That's why I never risked buying it.
Regarding grain on copics illustration, it's definitely a reaction to the paper. Sometimes it can be a downside, but in this case it gave extra texture to the pants, and it looks awesome.
