Likely because checked baggage with a few rounds isn't important to the TSA. But, it is important to the Turks and Caicos. Clearly, T&C got tired of giving warnings and is ready to make some examples.

In 1994, a court in Singapore sentenced an American teenager, Michael Fay, to be lashed six times with a cane for violating the Vandalism Act. After spending 83 days in jail, he was released early on 21 June on grounds of good behavior, and left Singapore for the US the next day. In the US the kid would have been given a sentence of community service hours and fined instead of jailed and whipped with a cane; know the laws of the country you are visiting or you can be spending years in prison!

These situations are about as stupid as anything I've ever heard of in my life. There has to be some sort of logic applied in cases like this where clearly these people aren't intentionally bringing bullets to another country to do anything illegal yet I'm not seeing any. I totally agree that each country has the right to make its own laws, and tourists have a responsibility to follow them. On the other hand, if T & C is going to have such draconian laws and penalties, it will scare people away from traveling there and ultimately hurt their tourism industry. I have never owned a firearm or ammo, so that would never be an issue for me. But who knows what other strict laws they may have. I have no desire to travel there after hearing these stories.

I feel like most of the comments in here tearing these guys apart are from people who either hate guns, have never owned guns, or have never actually shot guns or been to the range etc. I take my backpack with me sometimes on trips and it is sooooo easy to miss one or two 9mm bullets when trying to empty the bag. I had one get stuck in like the corner of the pocket one time, and you couldn't even see it when you looked in the pocket, I just got lucky that I wasn't taking that bag to Turks and Caicos apparently.... TSA at BWI just flagged my bag and pulled me aside, when I said "oh crap I thought I got everything out of there" they tossed the bullet and I boarded my flight. It is also illegal to carry ammunition on planes in America, but the TSA agents used their branes and realized that the bullet was just stuck in the pocket and it wasn't me trying to overthrow a government or try to bring down a jet.... I never really had any urge to go to this particular tourist destination, but now I will not even consider it. It sounds a lot like when a Somali pirate takes a tourist hostage and won't release them until the family pays. Bogus bogus bogus. And Now that there is a African American woman also in jail there, I wonder what is going to change with their approach now. Or all the liberal opinions on here.
