Honestly i grew up thinking Israel was this beacon of light inside the middle east. I was told because i was in a relgious family that Israel had one of the strongest armies and we must defened them from Muslims that hate their freedom. Honestly i grew up thinking Israel was this beacon of light inside the middle east. I was told because i was in a relgious family that Israel had one of the strongest armies and we must defened them from Muslims that hate their freedom. Now as an adult and after watching all this, i cant tell you how disappointed I am that i was propagandized on such a level, and that I ever defended this country.

I appreciate Emily talking about her shift in viewing Israeli propaganda. I think most Americans who focus on the issue have moments like that. I was pretty politically engaged from adolescence on and it was honestly only in my late 20s/early 30s that I began to really understand the basic fundamentals of the West Bank and Gaza situations. For people who only casually soak in the vibe of Israel/Palestine coverage the impression is that there are two countries at war due to ancient, mostly religious tensions. The awareness that Palestinians in the occupied territories are essentially some variation of prisoner, with no political rights and a complete disparity of power with one side controlling and brutalizing the other with impunity, is shocking when discovered because it's just so far from the discourse. Michael Brooks' way of explaining this by reversing the groups and just straightforwardly describing what exists is very effective at breaking through that cognitive dissonance.
The only way Americans would stop supporting Israel land grabbing is when Native Americans get together and start claiming their ancestral land back from non Native Americans regardless of any property rights or international law and we'll see how supportive they will be.
